That wood floor is intense, Realy compliments the vehicles. Whats supporting it? And how in the heck do you keep oil off of it.

Pretty sweet shop! Nice "Knucklehead" And a "Shovelhead"? and fine "Rod"! I'm such a "packrat" - How do you keep from having "bits" laying all over????? Do you store them elsewhere? Sadly I have a cupboard full of material for my lathe and mill. and then fluids and, well you know!! Jacks and jackstands, engines to be built, etc. Again, Beautiful shop!

Nimrod,

Love the small shop and the projects, especially the knucklehead and roadster pickup. Got to ask, though, what is the blue power hammer of to the side? It looks pneumatic and I'm guessing for sheet metal forming.

It's a louver press, hydraulic. I'll probobly be moving that into another building pretty soon, it takes up too much space in the shop. I've got a couple other little sheds that let me store **** and not clutter up this little shop.
As for the wood floor...it does soak up oil, and every Harley I've owned knows how to drip oil. I try and soak it up, and I may try and oil the floor to make it more oil resistant?
I know I can't be the only one on the board with a little shop though.

Well,

I looked back and found the pics of your place - SWEET!! You have a really neat place there! I'm jealous - Too many cool old bikes and rods - - - and a "Spitfire" too? (You glutton for punishment) Just kidding, worked on many when I had my shop. Thought it was a Stag for a second, but saw the bonnet latches. Hard top too, Woo - woo. I really like your place. Ahhhh - "Sweet inspiration" Time for me to get after my mess!

I too would like to see more pics of small garages. I am about to have built on my property a 20 x 20 metal garage since space is at a minimum so wanted to see what others do with smaller two car shops. I will get a 12 foot sidewall so I can one day get a lift in there also. I wish I had enough $$ and room to build a larger one but a 20 x 20 will have to do.

This was my old garage. It was only 12 feet wide but 27 feet deep. And all the water heater, water tank, waster and dryer was all on the left side. I worked out of this garage for 11 years. Now it's been converted to living space.

You can see there was just enough room to walk past the car. Had to work on one side then turn the car around. I built allot of cars in there.

Boy, my little garage looks so sad compared to what you guys have done, especially the wood-floor one.

Anyway, this is the garage that came with our house in the city. I don't know the dimensions, but it is in the small X tiny range. It can't be too large, as the dimensions of our entire lot is only 50'x100':

garage_outside01%20(Small).jpg

I maximized the space inside by installing shelving or pegboard on just about every possible surface:

garage_inside02%20(Small).jpg

I also put shelving up in the rafters for storage:

garage_attic01%20(Small).JPG

I have one large toolbox that I had to put up on a raised portion to rest on top of the foundation lip, and my one workbench is a rolling one that is better than nothing:

garage_workbench01%20(Small).jpg

This is an all-purpose garage, so it has to also hold all our yard supplies and tools:

garage_yardtools01%20(Small).jpg

When everything is put where it should be, there is a surprising amount of room in the garage:

garage_inside04%20(Small).JPG

I am able to park my '70 Cutlass Supreme SX in there, and still get by:

garage_inside05%20(Small).JPG

Although I have to pull it ALL the way up to the two engines I have on stands in the front of the garage:

garage_front02%20(Small).JPG

and all the way over to the right-side of the garage:

garage_clearance01%20(Small).JPG

so that I can get into the car on the left side, and still have access to my tools for my other projects:

garage_clearance02%20(Small).JPG

I've been able to do engine-swaps in the garage by draping a tarp over the back of the vehicle as it extends out the doors, which keeps out the weather, but it's far from ideal. It only has a single 15-amp circuit and two plugs, which will need to get upgraded before I can hook up my stick welder. I also have air routed out there from my basement, with a flexible line draped along the fence that runs from the house to the garage.

I'd eventually love to tear this one down, pour a new pad, and install a lift so that I can make a vertical 2-car garage and still have space to walk around whatever I park in there. For now, though, this is the best I can do. I'm interested in hearing how others have maximized their use of limited space.

Is that the back of a wagoneer I see? Tell me more about that if you don't mind.

It's actually a 4-door '78 Cherokee that I use for off-roading:

there's more info on it here:

http://www.drbob.tqhosting.com/cherokee/1978_chero.html

Believe it or not, I can still actually fit it into the garage, but normally it is parked in front. I would like to pour concrete between the two strips that currently make up my driveway, so that I'm not rolling on my creeper in dirt:

if the permitting process goes well, this will be going up in the coming spring.
the size is 17x20 and it's a pole barn type structure of my own design.
working budget is $10k I will eb doing every scrap of work myself.

big garages are nice, but us suburbanites can't swing the space for a huge shop and plain metal buildings will get you an Amish style shunning from the neighbors.

oh, and it WILL have a wood floor. at this size, the price difference between wood and concrete is nominal. I was back and forth on the idea, but Nimrod's garage floor sealed the deal for me.

I plan on documenting the whole process to the extreme and keeping records of costs and construction methods/details. I've been tinkering with the idea that a REAL set of detailed plans - like the kind that I publish for the highway bridges I design - combined photos and instructions of the "how to" might make a good book. but that may be overly ambitious.

here's my sketch, it's big.

Terrific looking design. Can you get that much height permitted in Milford? I'm still stewing at my zoning board hearing two years ago that quashed my plans for a steeper pitch and more room in the loft. Love to see your interior plans when you get them done...

Mine is tandem on one side and standard on the other. I don't have any pictures of the garage since we moved in. I was going to park the boat on the tandem side but since the doors where to narrow we sold the boat. It is around 35 ft deep.

This is my surprising large 1-car apartment garage. Besides tools I'm storing a 17' sea kayak, 2 bikes, jeep TJ hardtop, and a gas grill.

I just bought a townhouse with small 2-car (21'x19') garage. So in a couple months I'll be working on maximizing that space. Photos to come for sure.

I've had a large 3-car garage and a large 2-car garage in the past so these are still taking some time to get use to.

Just stumbled onto this site and was researching this exact topic when I ran across this thread. Just bought a condo in Long Beach, CA and this is my first garage:

P21200342BMedium.jpg

Obviously needs a few upgrades before I can bring my 71 VW Bus home to house it and work on it here. I dont know the size off the top of my head but it can JUST hold my FJ Cruiser with 33" tires and a roof rack.

Welcome to the site. Your post in this thread brought it to my attention for the first time, and I must say I now have a new refreshed appreciation for my suburban 2-car garage that I "thought" was too small.

Thanks for the boost.

I just wanted to start off saying I am a newb to the forum here. I live in Canada, am 21 years old, and have been married for 6 months. This is the house/garage on the acreage I just purchased. It is 24 x 12.5 ft. The garage used to be a two car but the family before us here got too large and then a beautiful master bedroom /entrance was built where half the garage was. I have some plans to finish the garage. I will most definitely have it insulated and heated with in wall electric heaters. I have some of these heaters in my house and they throw a very respective amount of heat. Roll some epoxy floor down. Put up OSB board and paint it white. I would like to put 4x8 sheets of checker plating all the way around the shop, but we'll see how it goes. I will more than likely weld a bench together and weld some cupboards to install along the top of the far wall. Even though we are talking about small spaces in this thread the possibilities seem endless.

Picture from the south side of the house.
DSC00347.jpg

This is the main entrance to the house, which all was very recently turned from garage space to living space.

Here is the door from the inside.

A main shot of the garage.

My 14x16 space...it's still in progress. I plan to get rid of the L shaped workbench and replace it with a 8' one and then put more shelving on wall the other half of the "L" was on. I am also going to replace that folding table in the middle with a rolling bench. I can outfit the bench with whatever tools I need (detailing: waxes, buffer, clothes; sawing: miter saw, clamps, etc...)

I was hoping my next house would have a 2 car garage larger than my last house which was 21x22. My neighbor has the same house as me but built a 25x20 garage that I think is 20' tall. It's a nice setup.

the pictures in order with directions looking into the garage from the front door.

picture 1, the left side. This part of the workbench will be removed and more shelves put in place.
picture 2, the front....this part of the workbench will be rebuilt as an 8' workbench with a 26" tool chest to the right of it.
picture 3, the right side...mostly lawn tools, hurricane shutters and scrap wood. From the ceiling is the longer wood.
picture 4, the rear...a table saw will go here and I may get rid of the metal band saw for a drill press, joiner/planer.
picture 5, the ceiling storage...mostly seasonal items
picture 6, the opposite side ceiling storage...wood, carpet, and other 'stuff'.
picture 7, right outside the 'front door'....a concrete pad off the driveway large enough for a car/truck and room to work around it. I plan on expanding the pad another 13.5 x 8.5 feet directly in front of the door.
