Proto Intermediate Sockets. Are these new?

While looking at 19mm Proto sockets on Zoro's website this morning, I noticed a new part number I wasn't familiar with. Plugging it into Proto's website brought up what they are calling an intermediate socket, which looks like a semi deep. I do not remember seeing these before and it looks like they have the new stamping style, so I'm guessing they just came out with these? Too bad it looks to all be 12 point right now. Hopefully 6 point will be coming along at some point. Here's a link if anyone wants to check them out.

Hmmm, 1/2” drive available? I’ll have to compare lengths when I get home. If they are really semi-deeps, I may actually be able to get these instead of the unobtanium (for me) Snappy midlength...

I bought a couple a few weeks ago. Not a lot of use on them so far but its nice to see that they offer a full range of sizes. Only offering them in 12 point is disappointing, though. The stamping on the sockets is easier to read than on typical Proto sockets but I can't see any other obvious differences in quality.
On a side note, it's disappointing how little effort Proto has put into their catalog since they released their original IOS app a couple years ago. I think it's one of the best to navigate but they haven't made any attempts to update or improve it.

Thanks for the heads-up, OP.

Has anyone found any info about availabilty of these sockets as sets? Building a set from individuals is cost prohibitive.

And, Proto, if you're out there somewhere reading this - Nice move! Now, how about some 6 pointers?

The 12 point deal reminds me of when Mac had their 3/8 drive intermediates, they were mostly pushed as 12 points.

I have found them individually, but haven't found them in sets yet. Run the part number through Google to find a source.

Ya I did that and only came up with individuals also, was hoping someone else had better luck than I did. I had my mind made up on some grey pneumatic 12 point semi deeps until something shiny happened. I would much rather spend my money on these protos though.

I think they transposed the sizing of the 32mm in the 3/4" drive metrics.

12 point only hurts my interest. 1/2 semi deep chrome metric is a rare beast, I would likely be interested.

Hopefully they will come out with six point sets as well, but I like seeing more tool makers getting into the semi-deep market.

The new proto logo/font on the sockets looks cool. I bought a wright socket recently that also had a much more modern look to it. These companies seem to be stepping up their game a little bit, at least in the marketing/style department haha

In smaller sizes, sure. But at some point, larger stuff may as well be 12 point, and 6 has no benefit. What's your cut off?

Funny. Nobody complains about 12 point combo wrenches but somehow stroke out over a 12 point socket. Me no get it ? I use either and own some of both. Nary an issue

24 or 27 mm and below I'd prefer 6. Actually I'd just prefer a set of each, but if cost or whatever limits me to only one, 6 point every time. 12 point combo is a necessary evil due to the swing arc. 80 tooth ratchets mean 6 point will almost always find its home.

Just got a response. They dont have sets. Zoro also only sells 1/4” and only in pairs. Luckily my buddy wants a set and will split the purchase with me. I’ll post my impressions after I get them.

Forgot all about this until I got the itch to buy some more tools that I don’t really need. Has anyone found any sets yet? 6 point? Any new info? I’m still interested in a 3/8 drive set in 6 point, actually, 12 point would be fine also. Mostly just wondering about a set rather than buying individually.

I would only buy a 12mm in 12pt. I would not buy any other sizes.

Great timing! I happened to be looking at 3/8” drive mid-length proto sockets last week. To create a mobile tool kit based around them. They come in 6mm up to 25mm in 3/8 drive which if I get SAE versions too, and skip just three duplicate sizes 8mm = 5/16”, 11mm = 7/16”, 19mm = 3/4” down to a few thousandths of an inch each. I could have a really solid mobile tool set.

Maybe a long flex head ratchet with the thumb ratchet piece snapped on for tight work. One to two extensions. Could be a fairly capable kit in a small package to keep in a vehicle. Not to do roadside repairs on your own vehicle but for general toolkit work.

I am best described as an amateur handyman and I don’t use wrenches or sockets day to day but they are nice when I need them. I’d pair this single socket kit with a set of 8mm to 19mm combination wrenches in metric and standard, also skipping the same three nearly identical overlaps.

I’d work out of a medium size tool bag and back in the trunk of my car I’d have The socket and wrench set, as well as a few big boy pliers like 16” cobras and 16” pliers wrench and a hacksaw. Stuff I don’t use on every job, stuff I’d maybe use on 1 in 20 jobs but when I need it, I need it.

I really like my Proto intermediates,in 1/4 and 3/8 drives.Zoro has them,kind of strange only singles tho.Dumped my deeps as I only reach for these.Definitively another good quality Proto product
