Something told me I needed to rescue these from the left coast. This lot was chilling on ebay as a “pick up only” auction in Los Angeles, and when I inquired about shipping, the seller graciously agreed. What did I get into? :bounce:

But wait, there were 3 major surprises I had no prior knowledge of before they arrived! :)

:wtf:

I think there's a missing question mark and a Where's Waldo? type quiz in this sentence, but I already had my eye exam this week and will wait for the answers!

Speaking of eye exam, maybe it's just me, but if you squint your eyes just a little, the way the little ratchets on the right are laid out looks like a few M60 7.62×51mm cartridge machine gun belts! :)

What I did see in the photos was this box and its contents. I’ll come back to that though.

attachment.php

Let’s check out the ratchets. The pictures showed the majority were parts ratchets, broken or gutless, some 3/8 and 1/2 but mosty 1/4, and Proto, lots and lots of 1/4 Proto. That seemed interesting enough considering where they were located.

First, I’ll start off with most of the round heads and some odds and ends.. All 1/4” drive. Lots of cheapies that are broken, etc.. Hmmm, warranty tools from a retailer? Tool supply house? Test facility? Used in industry or military? Someone’s curious broken and disassembled collection? No idea.

attachment.php

Brands include:

-Bonney, and its twins
-John Deere
-Bon-E-Con

-Kal Japan, and twin
-Alpha plus one different smaller Alpha round head body

-Truecraft Spain, and their twins
-Herbrand, plus a bunch of the other cheap import tri-wing no COO Herbrand

- A bunch or blank forgings, possibly Proto round heads, at least one with some misplaced knurling on the beam

-Penens- 1
-Par X- 1
-Walden-2
-Husky-5 (NB made)

Bonney, JD, Bon E Con

A smooth handle Bonney fully chromed? :wtf: Not sure what that’s all about. Unfinished prototype or mistake?

You guys are in for a treat if this site would wake up from the lagging funk it’s in today. Attachments is giving me a heck of a time.

Good lord! I'm subscribed... that's an amazing haul of ratchet goodness!

Great minds think alike, yes sir they do and I just chased down some poor man for an unseen bucket of nut drivers.
Tools you got to love them.

Cool. Have to agree Woody.

:wtf:

Lol. It was like a Waldo in the auction listing. I had spotted a nice P&C ratchet amongst the crowd.

On to surprise #1 in the group photos here...

attachment.php

attachment.php

...there are 6 special short ratchets. Two are a little longer and have a rubber grip. I’ve seen these two or variations of them a couple times before. I believe a fellow member posted some on the Gazette a while back too.

attachment.php

attachment.php

Note different head on the shorter ones with a straight line over the selector.

The one with the face plate has part number C-4749-T

The few 1/2” and 3/8” USA ratchets. Also non working. Figured I’d spare you guys and leave out the majority which is a pile of broken Truecraft ratchets and other imports in 3/8 and 1/2”.

These came with a bag of parts and pieces, as did the 1/4 drive stuff, which I forgot to photograph.

attachment.php

1/2 Challenger (ground off)
1/2 Penncraft
3/8 John Deere flex head. Apparently just needs a kit like the other Bonneys.
3/8 unmarked Plomb with a big broaching flaw
3/8 Cornwell
3/8 New Britain x 2
3/8 Williams
3/8 Penens

Took some shots of the flaw in the Plomb head.

That's a nice catch on the P&C paddle handle.

I don't know what you paid, I'm not asking what you paid, and I have no idea what plans you have for these, but the mind boggles with the possibilities! You are sitting on a stream of seemingly indefinite payback. People who have good ratchet guts but ugly ratchet frames, people who have god ratchet frames but broken ratchet guts. Rare oddballs. Unusual variants.

Do the empty Proto snubbies take regular guts?

Yep, they take just the normal guts. There is one more cover plate in nice shape with that same special part number. *another surprise yet to come too.

Haven’t quite figured out what I’m doing with some of these yet.

I’ll just say the price with shipping was very, very reasonable.

That’s the Husky, sorry. It got cut off in the NB group photo. CM 41 G. I’ve been trying to get my hands on some of these little Fors patent ratchets for a while. Haven’t checked yet to see what’s up with them. Parts for those that do open are non existent anyway.

Too much! I am used to scrounging for a ratchet here and there. That's like a kid breaking into the candy factory. Where do you start?

Yeah, or the Proto factory! Not sure where to begin. The good news is they are small and don’t take up a ton of room. I hope to get a couple of the special proto rats going.

There’s a spring and ball in those Fors that can be a real bear without some curved shim stock.

Would be interested in one of the New Britains Fors in good shape.

Oh yeah, WOW Wow wow!!!

Surprise #3.

I saw an open compartmentalized green wood box of parts in the listing. Was I shocked when I opened the package and pulled the box out!

Have to post two similar pictures because I did a double take when I first looked at it.

A few years ago, I bought a long-handled Proto 3/8" ratchet with one of the WT 3/8 plates. I put a Proto LA plate to keep it in good shape, but kept that plate. Here it is reassembled, with a standard Proto for comparison.

Awesome pick-up Three Bay! So much goodness and the rebuild kits can't be beat. I would love to find one of the shorties sometime. Or trade?

Wow, the repair boxes are very cool! I'd be torn between rebuilding ratchets and keeping the parts box contents intact, at least the parts that may somewhat belong.

Thanks guys.

Lol, Shelby.

BMW- thanks for the pic. Now I know what a WT 3/8 is, and I think I do remember you posting that somewhere. The handle looks beefier.

Shanny and BMW, maybe we can talk about some ratchet trading or something.

Kind of funny:
I saw that batch of stuff when it was first listed on Ebay while I was perusing through ads. Gave it a good look and thought "Nawwwww! Nobody on GJ would want that!" - so I didn't include it in the "Ebay hot deal" thread.
Go figure!

I must not have looked closely enough at the ad photos, or a lot of that stuff wasn't visible, because when I first saw the ad it didn't look like there was much there of interest other than a lot of gutless Proto 1/4" oval-heads.

You do have one in there that piques my interest, though:

If that's what I think it is, and it's operational.... those are pretty uncommon.
Unfortunately it can't be disassembled for service - it is what it is.

For those of you who are commenting about that older Husky 1/4" drive model:
I'm not a Husky expert by any stretch of the imagination, but if you're looking for a CM41 there are no fewer than three of them on Ebay right now.
I've posted them HERE: https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=7588689#post7588689
