I moved this from the main forum - better fit here I think. Matches with many other posts.
Pictures from 2006.

The new building was holding up the old building in front and I finally had enough of it and fixed the thing. Came out well - the east side still has a temp wall support, waiting on me to get around to pushing that out another 2-4' for a little more space.

Sunk in the ground a bit - whoever built it just set the plates on the dirt. Termites had a field day with it. Too much left good to knock it down.

Added some joists - it only had maybe 4 and two of those had longitudinal cracks. I sandwiched the old ones with new stuff and used glue and screws to make them into a solid beam.

Ski slope

Joists braced and reinforced, west side raised up some - you can see the size of the gap at the bottom of the west wall and it's still got 4~6" to go.

East side leveled and supported
garageE.jpg

Nobody sneeze, still moving up.
garageF.jpg

Up about a foot, that pole is still there - they put it deep in the ground.

Better now

4x4 supports on west wall
garageJ.jpg

That looks much better
garageK.jpg

What was supporting the NW corner - big pipe
garageL.jpg

Self supporting

The bottom of the wall is not cut off - it had to come up that far.
garageN.jpg

Bottom of west wall is at or a bit below grade, so I used block to keep the wood up and away.
garageP.jpg

Hand mixed and poured footing.
garageQ.jpg

Little paint and looks OK. Amazingly, the roof smoothed out and didn't buckle or do anything weird.

I freaking love this kind of stuff, man. Nice save, looks like a great second garage now!

Where did you look to develop your plan of attack, or are you trained in this area?

Man, that looks great....but, as I look at your photos, it seems the wall on the left is still crooked....are you gonna take it down & replace with new wall?

I think he covers that when he says:

"Came out well - the east side still has a temp wall support, waiting on me to get around to pushing that out another 2-4' for a little more space."

But maybe he can confirm that.

We moved in middle of 1997, I fixed it in 2006. So I took some time to "think about it" :) I kinda got a sudden rush of "I need to fix this, dammit". More inspiration and some yea, that'll work than super planning. The west side was a bit below grade and I wanted it to be extra secure, so that was what brought in the treated 4x4 posts, footer and block. That side needed to stay put until I got around to the rest of it.

I want to add on a work area on the rear shop and that will bring the east wall out so that both buildings are even on the alley side. They are a bit staggered right now. I'll build another footer on that side and make the rear part a concrete floor and the open shed part maybe just gravel. I also plan to build some swing out doors because the shed opening is really too short for roll up. The final deal should look like this:
garageplan.jpg

It's not set up to move the race cars in and out easily, but they stay on the trailers during the season and only get parked inside during winter. Unless somebody needs some tinkering.

The rest of the shop work will happen after I finish the house rework. Kitchen and back hall at least.

Any better pics of the support? Were the 2x's full length, or nailed together (offset joints), etc?

I need to do the same thing and have been looking for a steel tube (never thought of laminating 2x's).
