Electrical question for you sparkies... Mechanical guys/gals feel free to chime in as well. Wasn't quite sure where to put this (electrical vs hvac) so Mods move it as you see fit.

As many of you may know, I manage construction of new homes. This job has its benefits...

Well, we closed down one of our models as the community is built out. We use the garage as the sales center. So happens that the 30x21' x 12' tall 3-car garage was equipped with a Goodman MSG12WHN1N minisplit. This appears to be a 1 ton unit and apparently 13-13.5 SEER. It is not quite 5 years old.

Any event, the HVAC contractor pumped it down (allegedly containing the charge in the outdoor unit?) and sealed off the ends. This was done a couple days ago and the indoor and outdoor units with remote now sits in my basement. I did not get the line set.

My plan is to use it in my attached garage which is 28x22'x 9' tall 2-car garage (97% of the original SF, and 73% of the original volume). My garage is not insulated as quite as well as the model (R13 vs R21). I will have our HVAC contractor run the line set, pump it down, and start it up.

My question pertains to the wiring of the unit. I spoke to the electrician who disconnected the unit. He says it was fed with a 220V 20A breaker via 10/3 (due long run of about 90 feet from the panel) to an outside disconnect and then to the outdoor unit. He said the outdoor unit needed a neutral. He also said there was 12/3 UF run from the outdoor unit to the indoor unit along with a thermostat wire.


I find the electrician's statements odd after trying to find a manual and looking at the electrical diagrams on the units themselves. Attached are pictures showing the wiring diagrams found on the outdoor and indoor units and nameplate data.

Several questions:

1. The nameplate says Minimum Circuit Ampacity 11A, Max Fuse 15A , and Compressor Locked Rotor Amps 23.5A. Should I be using a 240A 20A breaker like the model had?

2. I fail to understand the electrician's statement that a neutral was needed and why he ran 10/3. The outdoor unit clearly only has only 3 terminals for black, white, and ground. I see no place to land the neutral.

3. There is clearly 4 conductors between the indoor and outdoor units - brown, red, black, and blue. I've no clue what each does. Electrician said the indoor and outdoor units (less than 15' apart) where connected with 12/3UF. I assume this was convenient and proper as the ground is fully insulated compared to Romex 12/3. Obviously the color code would need to be carefully honored. The convenience being not needing to run conduit of some sort and get color coded THHN wire. Any issue of 12 wire vs 10 wire?

4. I also fail to understand the electrician's statement that there was also a low voltage thermostat wire. I see no connections for this.

5. Lastly, the project manager I got the unit from said it worked very well in the garage that is larger than mine. Any thoughts on how well this 1 ton unit will work?

Any thoughts?

The interconnecting terminals are clearly labelled Low Voltage DC and the cable may have been supplied with the unit. The outdoor unit sends everything the indoor unit needs on that cable. Southwire offers a 14/4 MC cable good for indoors and out just for this application if it is now missing.

As for the branch circuit to the outdoor unit:

If the MOPD (maximum overcurrent protective device) listed on the label is 15 A you need to install no larger than a 15 A breaker. The MCA (minimum circuit ampacity) is 11 A, so 15 amps will do the trick. Run 12 gage if you want, but 14 is adequate and there is absolutely no need for 10 gage wire. If they stammer and point at the 24 amp LRA and tell you it needs 10 gage, send them packing. Any electrician or HVAC tech who cannot read and understand the label on the unit needs to step back and let someone who does understand it do the work.

Don't forget you will need a disconnect and receptacle at the outdoor unit for service.

I didnt know Goodman made a mini split,well I've never seen one installed around here anyway.
I'd run it on a 15a breaker.

I think it's a rebadged Daikin from before Daikin bought Goodman but I've been out of the HVACR business for a while now and it's hard to keep up.

His statements are not only odd but completely incorrect. First off, any electrician saying 220v needs to be questioned.

Second, that unit is 240v so no neutral needed.

1. whoever installed it did not follow directions. nameplate says 15a fuse so a 15a fuse is required. Get a fuseable disconnect.

2. You wont understand it because they probably dont either. They wasted wire. #14 is sufficient.

4. The indoor unit needs a signal to turn on. The connection terminals should be there.

5. Without knowing your environment and variables, its hard to say. There are load calculators online for HVAC sizing. I suggest using one to be sure.

Wylies - thanks for the feed back, you confirmed my suspicions. I still don’t understand the supposed low voltage thermostat wire that was there as there is zero additional terminals for same. I do have a GFCI outlet already where the outdoor unit will go.

For what it’s worth I had that electrical contractor terminated from the jobs I run as they could not meet schedule and I thought they were hacks. This unit came from a job site run by one of our other project managers.

You have 4 clearly marked terminals on each unit for low voltage DC. Those four wires carry all the power and comm the 2 units need to work together. There is no separate low voltage t'stat connection. Did they perhaps use that t'stat cable for the connection between the units?

I don’t think so. The electrician said 12/3 UF was used to connect the two units which would account for the 4 conductors needed (albeit low voltage as you point out). I’ve no clue on the alleged thermostat wire. I found a manual but not my exact model number (couple of letter and numbers different) but it said these 4 wires should be 18 AWG minimum.

I think the thermostat wire, if present, was bogus and along for the ride.

Any links to the Southwire 14/4 MC cable?

You and Wylies are on the same page so I feel good on where this is headed.

Edit 1/20/19 - I found the Southwire 14/4 MC cable TRWham mentioned. From the reviews it is not very bend friendly, needs a special cutter to cut to length, and uses expensive connectors. I probably will just use 14/3 UF for convenience to connect the indoor to the outdoor unit.

I did not get the disconnect. Any links to a cost effective 240v 15A fused disconnect?

Edit 1/20/19 - This disconnect looks like it will do the job for under $12 less the cost of fuses.

20 amp 2 pole breaker if using #12 wire. Fused disconnect with 15 amp FRN fuses.

The linked fuses appear to both be FRN 250v fuses. The cheaper one with blown indicator.
