Backstory. I'm owner and operator of tt-motorsports.com and have been renting and dreaming of my own home based shop since I started out in 2010. Fast forward to this past November. My wife and I found a perfect home and property to make the dream come true. Sold my rental home in California and got started on the long process. After 2.5 months received the permits and finally getting it going.

Specs are red iron building from bunger steel building. 50x80 16ft eves. 3 12x14 roll up doors and 1 man door on north wall. West wall will have 12x12 roll up door which will open to a 25x50 lean to. Slab is going to be 5inch thick over 4in ABC. Should be a very nice upgrade from my 2000 sq ft current shop that is crammed packed with 3 vehicles and all my equipment.

I will be doing general welding and fabrication. Production suspension and offroad kits. As well as suspension and roll cage fabrication.

Breaking ground this weekend. Concrete should be formed up and poured the end of this month. April 2019. So progress will be a little slow until building is delivered end of may. Myself. My wife. Parents and friends will be erecting the building ourselves.

A little before and after of weed and dirt mount removal. Burned the weeds. Going to cut up trees we removed and trimmed and will burn those once they dry out.

Welcome. Love when a dream comes true. Or starts coming true.

Sounds like a 50' clear span (no intermediate columns). That's gonna be some tricky steel flying/swinging. Please remember that the wind on the ground may not, and usually isn't, the wind 25' up in the air.

Keep lotso photos coming.

Yes 50ft clearspan. Have a large pettibone forklift rented and 2 scissorlifts so hopefully won't have any problems putting it up. But we are all rookies here with red iron only general home construction here.

So concrete guys are getting started on Friday. Any tips or things you guys suggest to make erecting building and assuring a nice flat slab?

I have a laser transit here I used to grade and am going to double check the forms once set. As well as triple check anchor bolt locations and level and heights as well to make sure putting up the steel is troublefree as it can be.

Any other suggestions or tips please feel free to post away.

Desert hills area. North Phoenix

Howdy neighbor, literally. We are also in Desert Hills and just finished our custom build. No thread as we did the house first and this after all is the "Garage" journal. However, a detached 56x56 garage is in the plans for later this year. Garage on the house is still a decent 40x31.

All the county inspectors we dealt with for this area are super laid back.

Very nice garage. Our home has a normal 2 car garage is all.

One issue I'm having now is power to the shop. 400ft run from house meter is gonna make me broke on conduit size and wire.

Attempting to have county allow me to add a second meter. Starting that process now.

In anticipation of the shop we asked that as well and got shot down. We were basically told you are only allowed one meter per parcel#, so we would have to split our lot in order to get another one. Hopefully you have better luck! If so let me know the secret on how you got it accomplished.

I've a friend who bought a property in East Mesa with an 1100 sq ft home and a 36x96 shop/garage on 3 acres in a county island. He just upgraded the power to both as he and his son have a huge selection of machine tools. 400A main at the house split into 2 200A services. SRP upgraded the drop to the house for free. Only allowed 1 meter, even though he wanted 2 as the house is a rental.
He ran 2 - 3"and 1 - 1-1/2 conduits to the shop just in case of future expansion. Did a ton of craigslist/auction, etc to get his panels and wire reasonably, but he works in Los Angeles as a salesman so he has tons of drive time to check out leads. 3 phase wasn't available, so he got 2 15hp rotary phase converters at auction. He gets everything mostly at auctions for pennies on the dollar. Helps that his son is a machinist for an injection mold firm and can tell him what to look for.

Good luck getting your places settled

Yeah APS my power company will upgrade wiring from transformer to house to go 400amp panel. Then I can run 200 amp sub panel for home and one for the shop.

The almost 400ft run of wire to feed shop is what expensive and trying to avoid if at all possible.

That is what we ended up doing as well. We have a 400a on the house that has a 100 sub in the garage and another 100 sub on the opposite side of the house in a mechanical room. This left us set up for a future 200 sub for the shop.

15th ave.

I checked out your website and it looks like you do great work. Is the plan to have your business at your house? Reason I ask is I will be in the market "soon" (after my wallet recovers from the house) for a few truck accessories such as: headache rack, maybe a bumper, that type stuff.

Taking their sweet *** time. Should be poured on Tuesday. Anchor bolts are level in both planes and level with each other un elevation based on transit. So far so good

Question for everyone here. I'm roughing in some plumbing for toilet and sink for future use. Do I need to run the 4inch pipe below the footing or can I go through the footing. If I go below I dont believe I will have enough fall to drain properly to my septic tank. That 1 foot higher at building will make all the difference. Footing is 12inch wide x 24inch . Plumbing would be perfect if set 15inch below top of footing.

Thanks.
