Railroad vise stand

I was chatting with Kevin Scott and he mentioned a really unique railroad vise that he needed to build a stand for.
I saw a pic of the vise and immediately had some design thoughts, so the next time we talked, I asked him if he would be interested in letting me build the stand for it.
He agreed and here are the results.
Started by cutting the head off a tank for the base.

I asked Kevin if he needed it to be free standing or bolt down, he thought it would be fine either way.
The tank head is only 24" in diameter (a little small for a 8" vise) so I welded a bottom in it, so it could be filled with steel punchings for ballast.
Also welded some bolt pockets in,to fasten to floor if desired.

Next, welded the bolt pockets to the bottom plate, then welded the bottom to the tank head.
Then welded the bolt pockets to the tank head.
I ran a center bolt through it all and pulled a 1/2" of camber in the bottom plate before welding, so it would have no chance of teetering when welded out.

Had a few pieces of 3/16" plate sheared and formed and split some 2-1/2" pipe for the column.

Next, cut the top plate and tacked it in place to grind to the angle and contour of the column.
Then grind it loose, so nuts can be tacked on the backside.

Top plate welded out and dressed.
I will get some primer on it in the morning, that should help seeing what it truly looks like.

Are you making a stand for that humongous vice you built?
You could always fashion one out of a salvaged cat bucket like in the picture. :lol_hitti

Looks great Royce. I love dished shape from the tank end on the bottom and bolt pockets always look nice cut into them. The tapered column is pretty neat too. A fitting perch for a RR vise. Ed.

Royce, Wow. What a surprise I got today opening your thread. Yes we chatted on some particulars of the design but how can anyone ever imagine a stand like this coming from you. Your lines match the vise so perfectly. Just incredible job and to be honest I am almost in tears. Normally I make stuff for friends and customers this is the first time something was made for me. I am so humbled.

Thanks Vise, Strouty, Bigblue, Wrenchguy and all.
Yes, the plugs are loose and made of 1-5/8" round bar, with 3" of embed, so I believe they will stay put.

It is 28"tall, which will make the top of the jaws 40"
