Snap on 1/4 drive ratchet maintainence?

I have 2 1/4 drive ratchets that i have recently purchased lately and was using them the other night replacing a sensor on my girls taurus and noticed that both ratchets under load would slip a couple teeth. First let me say i never knew that you was suppost to keep your ratchets lubed till i found this site and have yet lube either of these 2, 1 is a GM-70 M that i picked up off of a Chad here, and the other is a TM-70 B that i got last week at the pawn shop in a set. To me that sounds like the teeth or paw is worn but could it be just lack of lubrication? If i had a order to place with my snap on guy i would try and track him down (Try is the key word) and ease his pain in supplying a rebuild kit. Which brings me to my next question is there a kit available still? That Gm model is old but looks identical to the newer one and even has a hole in the top of the head which i assume is for lubricating, Again im not sure. Thanks in advance.

Yes a rebuild kit is available. I just bought one for my TM-70. About $20 for everything (pawl, gear, spring, cover plate) as I recall. You can find the rebuild kit on the Snap On web site but it is a bit of a PIA. Or do like me, and simply call the 800 number for snap on parts.

The part number for the repair kit that will work for both ratchets is RKRA930A and it can be ordered from my website http://chadmcfarlane.snapontools.com/

They cost $10 each.

Highly unlikely that Snap on would replace the ratchets, Good chrome and rebuild kits available = at best free guts, which is fine with me. As i stated earlier my snap on guy is hard to get ahold of so 20 bucks is reasonable repair for 2 ratchets. I fired a email off to snap on requesting my options for getting my ratchets operational so depending on what they tell me i will either follow there instructions or take chadster up on his offer. Thanks again fellas

Just had some of my early 1/4" ratchets just like yours rebuilt; kits are definitely available and the new kit will come with a better selector then the old style. Would be nice to get those free; hopefully, snapon will do something for you!

Find a truck and you should be able to get them repaired for free. Snap-on customer service MIGHT send you some kits for free but I doubt it. Since the ratchets have repair kit available your chances of getting these replaced for T72's is highly unlikely.

There's been quite a few people here that have been sending tools directly to Snap-on since they don't have any dealer support. So far Snap-on has been sending back new tools from the current catalog instead of rebuilding the ratchets etc for some reason so it is possible. :dunno:

Or if you have BRAND NEW SEVERELY DEFECTIVE tools!!

I still have that defective OEX14B wrench. None of my local dealers will replace it - I'm gonna have to send it in to corporate eventually.

Why don't you just break it? Seems like you've exhausted all other legitamate options.

What should someone use to lubricate a ratchet? I just picked up a used mac XR8 ratchet it it says right on the face of the ratchet to "clean and oil regularly".

I use Permatex 81950 Ultra Slick assembly lube on MAC 30 tooth ratchets with phenomenal success.

Sorry for bringing back an old thread...

How do you take the plate off a Snapon GM-70M? I was thinking to re-grease mine. However, after removing the two screws, I just could not take the plate off to access the gear. Is there any trick? :headscrat

They get Krusty, Sometimes you have to give the Gear Head a little nudge.

i got a brand new one that felt like ****, snap on guy put new guts in it and special grease and it was like butter after that.

I grease it with Mobile 1 bearing grease (only thing I have in hand). It seems to be working just fine.
