Hello,

I found these at an estate sale. One of many hand tools I threw in a bucket. I cannot find any date code, what would be an approximate age for these old pliers? Thanks!

Looks 40's to me. If you're going to be posting other pliers from your haul, we have an excellent Snap-on thread here with several knowledgeable, experienced Snap-on collectors, and I'd recommend posting there. Go to the Index in the Sticky at the top of the page. You'll find it.

Thank you very much for the replies. I’ll check out that Snap on thread. A majority of the tools were Plomb/Proto/SK. The only Snap on stuff was these pliers, a pick, a few U joints and a metric socket set from 1953.

Leviton, no other marks or stamps but there may be something faint under the grime. The only other identifying features would be the raised circle grip pattern and heat treated tips.

Thank you very much for the help, everyone. SS Save i cannot find any other markings, I’ll clean them lightly and see what’s hiding under the grunge.

As for the Plomb tools I gave the majority to a friend to keep with his 1944 Willys MB. He loves the period correct stuff, a good amount of it was WF stuff. I kept two ratchets, a 5449 1/2” and 5649 3/4”. I did get a set of Lectrolite Tru-Fit offset wrenches that I’ll keep. The Proto and SK stuff was mostly 60’s. The estate was primarily machine tools and accessories, I scored a bunch of great measuring equipment, clamps, indexing head, dividing head, tool post grinder, chucks, cutting tools, books etc.

My equipment is mostly of similar vintage, a 1971 BP variable speed, 1956 SB 10K benchtop, mid 50’s Craftsman 150 drill press and block grinder.

Here's the markings on my vacuum grip snap on's. Note the date code of 6 for 1946.

Here's a link to the Vacuum grip pliers history, and how they relate to Snap-on. Forged Steel Products, the Vacuum grip manufacturer, partnered with Snap-on for many years making Blue Point and Vacuum Grip tools before being acquired by Snap-on. In reality, Forged Steel Products was a company equal to Snap-on, and they merged in 1945, when Snap-on acquired Forged Steel Products company. The President of Forged Steel Products company had also been President of Snap-on from about 1931, so that shows the relative importance of Forged Steel Products to Snap-on.

I have some other Vacuum Grip/Snap-on pliers somewhere, if I run into them I'll post some more photo's.

Here is my pair of #96 pliers. Both handles marked snap on with the 1961 date code.

Thank you for the history link. It was a great read!

I cleaned the pliers and can confirm no additional markings of any kind.

Found another pair, No. 196, look a lot like yours, these ones have a 1953 date code. Lettering is different than yours, though.

Nice dual marked pliers, Dave. Clear markings and date code.

All posted have recessed markings, I haven’t been able to come across a raised logo like the ones I have. Based on all the great information shared here I have learned a lot in respect to Snap on business mergers and the evolution of markings.
