Funny how things work out as you can recall from my story several weeks ago or maybe longer, in that I bought a very unique tool and it came with a of very old set of wood chisel blades with that tool. The estate agent was very upset with me when I told him the chisels do not belong with the tool and he just about blew up on the spot. Now I can understand how %99.999 percent of the people would have made that mistake but you needed Sherlock Holmes to point out that (A) one tool has different name from the other and (B) one tool has the letters USA and the other one has the Royal Crown of England on the tool.
So with out fanfare a name that most every gardener and wood worker from around the World has come to know as Spear & Jackson. They had their start in 1760, when Alexander Spear and John Love formed a company in Sheffield England called Spear & love. At it so happened that in 1814, John Spear, the nephew of Alexander, took on an apprentice with the name of Sam Jackson and in 1830 that new partnership became known as Spear & Jackson.
Of course all of are members on the other side of the pond know about Spear & Jackson but I am willing to bet some of are members have never heard of the name before. Collectors go ape looking for vintage tools from this company and they can bring a pretty penny as they say.
The wood chisel has been very badly damaged, it will need time on my grinder and belt sander but alas not much of it will be left. I had to take a lens and place it over the top of it for you to be able to read the inscription. I had to go back to the 1930 catalog (be sure and see the links) just to get a better look at everything. So lots of links with the whole story and some really cool pictures of very old vintage chisel blade for you to enjoy.
