We'll my wife and are come up to our 2 year anniversary and we've accomplished alot in the first year.

The background here is 5 yrs ago a purchased a '70s tri-level on a hair less than an acre. We've been working on it ever since! The last year is the biggest push. My lovely wife got a wide open dream kitchen!

The kitchen made it easier to convince her a shop was needed

I'd like to think the kitchen's come along when from what we started with. Mojave counter tops, linoleum and popcorn ceiling.

Now the fun stuff! I've been lerking on here a while. Read other people's threads, gathering ideas...drooling.

My wife's an accountant so she wont quite let me go crazy on this shop build. I quoted all last summer. Pole barn builders. Metal and wood. Even toyed with the idea of doing it myself stick built, but the additional cost of concrete for the footers proved to costly.

We settled on a 30x40 wood post building. With a 20' concrete approach. 100 Amp panel coming from house. Electrical contractor is setting the panel per code then I'll wire it the way I want 😉.

But first some prep. The previous owner had a large garden in these raised boxes and quite frankly I was tired of mowing around them.

By the time I gathered all my quotes the builder we choose was booked out to January..ok no big deal.

Around the first of December he calls and bumps me up. He put up our building in split in the working days before and after Christmas. Good thing my wife had her budget 🤣

My builder was pretty easy to deal with. The electrical contractor was a pain. He sub-contracted some guys to put in the conduit from house to shop. I met them there over my lunch hour. I winced when the showed up with a mini track hoe and a 14" wide bucket. I knew they'd tear up my yard but it's all fix able, right?

Electrical contractor said the inspector was headed out to measure conduit depth while the trenches was here. Line of BS so I wasn't surprised to see they'd left part of the trench open. This will come back to be a pain in the a$&.

I'm already questioning the size. Ideally I'd stack 4 vehicles in there but owning a bunch of pickups it will still be tight. 36x50 would have been nice lol. Never big enough!

I've been try in vain to get my driveway squared away and start moving some stuff in. It's been in the 60s here the last couple days....still not dry enough. No worries, wife got home and gave me a pull lol.

I had a load of gravel delivered but I'm beginning to think I need some 4" minus for a firm base as soft as this is.

Thanks for posting the build, that is a very nice size barn. Hope 100amp panel is big enough for you in there. About how from from your house is the barn?

Geotech fabric and 4" base goes a long way. If you only do one get geotech fabric it keeps you rock from sinking into the soft soil. Around my area with the clay we have the geotech fabric is a must even with only foot traffic.

Yes go ahead and put the geo down and go about living your life without worry of your driveway disappearing. I’m building a house right now and we were able to put a driveway in even with all the rain we’ve been getting thanks to the geo.

Another vote here for geo fabric. When the driveway was put in for my chicken barn they put that stuff over what most would call mud along with a good foot of nice Class 5 gravel and it holds 100,000lb semis without issue. That stuff is amazing !!

Looks to be a sweet garage and a nicely done kitchen.

I have a 100 amp panel in the building. 200 amp panel in my house. 100 amp breaker in the house going to the building. I was told by my electrician that be enough for a hobby shop even with my 60 amp miller welder. My take on it when do you ever have every circuit on?

Well I didnt read the previous comments about the geomesh. I had 13 tons of 1"-3" delivered. The first load I got was just to fine. I think they called it 1-1/4" minus.

I was able to get alot of the spongeness out of my trench line closer to my pad. Still not great in the middle. But with rain in the forecast i wanted to get something spread out. I can now pull my pickup in the shop with out bouncing up on the the approach.

I think my Grandpa's old 8N looks great out front! 😍

Your place looks great.

If I ever get this place to done done status where I feel I have enjoyed the place without any more Reno **** and move out of the city, you have added to my must haves and that’s an old tractor sitting next to the garage.

The kitchen remodel looks really good. Did you do the work yourself?

Yes, my wife and I did most of it. My dad helped a few days. We lived off of crockpot and microwave meals for 2 months. It felt like a month of that was just drywall.

One of the things I'm looking forward to is not doing any drywall in the new shop.

I'm doing a kitchen right now and am on a similar timeline. Good god it *****. Two kids in the mix in my house too. Your remodel looks great though. Nice job.

Nice looking garage too, congratulations to you and the wife.

I'm looking for a recommendation on concrete sealer. I'm not a fan of anything with a high gloss. I prefer a mat finish but that will prevent grease and oil stains. I've done epoxy coatings before in two different houses in the basement laundry rooms. I liked the outcome but not very practical for this large of a space, for me anyway.

I'm considering either Eagle clear sealer or RadonSeal. Both readily available at Home Depot. The RadonSealer is a penetrating hardener as well as sealer. Is it worth the additional cost?

That subject can make your head hurt. I'm still working on permits, but am thinking I'll go with something similar to the RadonSealer - Concrete Sealers PS104 Lithium Silicate Densifying WB Penetrating Sealer w/Siliconate Repellent

I also don't want high gloss or epoxy. Just a simple surface protectant.

SAME HERE! Certainly worth looking at. Best of luck on your permits!

Well I didnt do anything in the shop this weekend. Honey do's got in the way. We took the opportunity for this cold snap to add another layer of insulation to the upstairs attic. The upper level just traps heat like crazy in the summer. While I was up there I added a thermostat controlled exhaust fan too.

Strange last couple days. Travel restrictions from work most of our corporate office is working from home. My wife has her work station set up on the kitchen table. I was still going into the office but made arrangements to work from home although outside/technical sales isnt any fun over the phone. It keeps raining too! So my driveway hasn't gotten any better. I did go out in the shop and start on my scaffolding for wiring and insulation. Let's hope all this other stuff blows over and we can all get back to having fun in our respective shops!

Yesterday evening I worked on my redneck scaffolding. I need to dig out some castor wheels I'll put on the bottom. This will help me run all my wiring and insulation.

Afterwords my wife and I grilled some homemade venison brots and enjoyed a warm evening. 75° high for today. Tomorrow forecasted to be in the 40s. Enjoy it while it lasts!

My builder wasn't the greatest when in came to sight prep. I got more concrete out of him because of it, lol. I spent some time on the 8N trying to straighten out some drainage on the north side of my building. Still needs a little more. There's more rain in the forecast so we'll see what this does. I'd like to eventually rock around the building to keep grass and what not from growing up next to it. I also finished up my scaffolding! My wife came out and helped stand it up, she thinks I'm nuts 🤣. With the casters I can grab a roof truss and roll it around. Should make wiring and insulation much easier!

I got a little more done today....a little hard to get motivated with the dreary weather we've been having. It also doesn't help my mucky driveway any.

I got to bust out my FB market place find today. Half of a 1000' spool of 12/2 for $75. I got 2 walls ruffed in. I won't set boxes until after I put up insulation. I plan on mounting boxes on 8' liner panels that I'll boarder the perimeter of the building.

While I was up there I threw up one of my 8' led lights. I was nervous they weren't going to be bright enough. I bought a case of 10ea. I plan on putting 9 on the ceiling. 3 rows of 3 and the 10th light I'll hang above my work bench.

I'm no journeyman electrician but I feel pretty good about my half day of progress. Another few hours and I'll be out of supplies.

Do I break the social distancing/isolation to make a home depot run?
