After almost 9 years of being in our starter home, wife and I decided to buy our dream home, which meant a new garage build! I'm coming from a single car garage (outlined in this thread, unfortunately most of the picture links are broken https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=122963)

On our house hunt, I had some requirements for the garage: it had to be a 3 car or large 2 car, with high ceilings. Originally we were looking at older houses in the area (we like older houses), but stumbled upon a new construction build that we loved. It is a 2 car with a 6ft bump out and 12 foot ceilings.

Re: Indianapolis 2-car BMW/Ford 2-car garage build!

For this garage build, I want to keep it less "traditional car garage" and more upscale, classy. By "traditional car garage", I mean things like stripes on the walls, bright neon colors, etc. Big fan of Matt at Obsessed Garage, so there will be a lot of inspiration from his builds and products.

Preliminary plans:
- Install LED strip lighting
- Swisstrax Ribtrax flooring, with Rubbertrax in the bump out area
- Install Liftmaster 8500w Elite jackshaft opener
- Paint walls (Benjamin Moore Harbor Grey)
- Add more receptacles

Goals by the end of the year:
- Saber cabinet array in the bumpout area
- Raise garage door tracks to the ceiling
- Install can lights or some type of task lighting above bumpout/cabinet array
- 60 gal air compressor
- Kranzle pressure washer install (complete package from Obsessed Garage)

Re: Indianapolis 2-car BMW/Ford 2-car garage build!

Luckily the builder of the home has a solid reputation for paying attention to the details (no builder grade stuff), even in the garage. I'm starting with a pretty solid foundation.

PROS:
- Very high quality, insulated Wayne Dalton garage door
- 1 15a and 1 20a dedicated circuits
- Good drywall finishing job (for a garage)
- Trim work is as good as inside the house
- Epoxy floor, even though I'm covering it up, it's nice to have underneath

CONS:
- 20a circuit only goes to 1 receptacle at the moment
- Only one receptacle on the wall with the window, being used by the irrigation system and soon the new garage door opener
- Garage door opener is basic and seems underpowered, but I'm replacing it anyway
- Door height is only 7ft

Re: Indianapolis 2-car BMW/Ford 2-car garage build!

First project had to be the lighting, the 2 LED round fixtures had to go. I've searched for the last several weeks for lighting and I had my mind made up on commercial grade vapor proof, because of the quality. I am really not a fan of the random Amazon brands. But, turns out I'm a hypocrite, because I just couldn't justify the cost of commercial lighting, and my options were also limited to what I can get at the moment because of supply chain disruptions.

All that to say, I took a chance on some highly rated 8ft LED strip lights from Amazon. I was not interested in any exposed bulb lighting. Pretty impressed with the build quality of these lights, as the metal is considerably thicker than some of the fixtures you get from major brands at big box stores.

Off to a good start! I like all 3 grays on your color card. If you are doing all 4 walls I would stay on the lighter side to prevent the garage from feeling too dark. I had one wall in a previous garage painted something close to "Galveston gray" and I liked it a lot but I think all 4 walls would have been too dark.

WOW! Super jealous of your ceilings!! Wish I had that kind of height in my garage. Surprised that your plans/goals did not include a lift of sorts.

Really like your light set up. I am currently looking to do some sort of enclosed LED lighting in part of my garage to increase the lighting. I'll be keeping tabs on your build!

Love the M3 as well!

I forgot to mention the lift issue - I'm going back and forth on it. I want one for sure and several models will fit, but I'm not sure if I want to take up that much space. I may look into a scissor lift.

You might figure out what works best for you before blindly following Matt's preferred setups.

I can't imagine spending over $3000 on Swisstrax flooring to cover up brand new, FREE epoxy flooring.

:headscrat I don't think I'm blindly following, I like the way the floor looks. And the cost is just over $2k.

Re: Indianapolis 2-car BMW/Ford 2-car garage build!

Might as well cover up that epoxy. I have never seen a builder-grade home with epoxy put down that did not suffer from hot tyre pick up. Based on how this project is starting off, I just don't think you are going to be content to ignore the 'bad spots' on your floor the way some people do. I think the builders just don't prep properly and focus more on the "ohh and ahh" factor to get buyers to fall in love and sign the contract. That, and they use relatively cheap products most likely to maximize profit. The builder is long gone when your floor starts lifting 2 years later.

edit: With those 12' ceilings, you realize that it is pretty much a requirement that you buy a lift, right? I thought there were two Fords in addition to those two Bimmers?

I agree about the epoxy - I'm not expecting too much out of it, although it does seem to be a decent quality job and it was done by a reputable company in the area.

A lift of some type will probably happen, we shall see :bounce: Although I'll have to raise the door tracks first, and the quote I got to do that was a bit, shall we say, high (about $1300 just for the tracks and springs).

The Ford is a 2012 Raptor, which will spend it's time outside for now.

Got the walls painted today - what a difference! Liftmaster 8500w Elite will be here tomorrow, I’ll probably install it Sunday. Swisstrax has been ordered, hope to get that installed next weekend or the week after.

FINALLY got my 48” storage cabinet that I ordered 3 weeks ago from Home Depot. Nice to get at least some stuff out of boxes and into cabinets.

No word on when Swisstrax flooring will arrive, hopefully in time for install next weekend.

Also looking to submit the Saber cabinet order this week. It hurts to see a good portion of my tools in boxes.

Sounds like you want a lot of the things I did in my 3-car garage. Saber cabinets, RaceDeck floor, grey painted walls with finished trim work, etc.. I have 14-foot ceilings with doors that go all the way up and then hug the ceiling a bit and use Liftmaster 8500 jackshaft openers. That makes it easy to add a lift at some point later on. I have LED lighting across all three bays that are switched separately for each bay. I also had LED strip lighting under my upper cabinets to use as task lighting on the bench. Had to throw a 46" TV up on the wall too so I can watch my Yankees games when we get back to normalcy.

My garage isn't done yet though. I'm probably going to add some stone veneer to the foundation walls under the drywall. I think that will look really good, but it's not going to be inexpensive.

Best lifts for sure. I have a couple and then the Chamberlain equivalent on a third door. And sounds like you are creating a similar feel to my space as well. Obviously you have great taste! :)

Update on garage - still waiting on Swisstrax. Supposedly was shipped yesterday at the latest but still don’t have any tracking info. The sales guy at Swisstrax has been awesome to work with but I’m not sure what the hold up is. They’ve had funds for over a week.

Also ordered my cabinet array from Saber. Went with the design below, but with a 4 drawer in the middle space. And I’ll probably be orienting both storage lockers side by side on the right side.

Swisstrax arrived last week and Saber cabinets will be delivered Friday. Oh, and we brought a newborn home this past Saturday :shocking:

Needless to say, things are a little backed up but by the end of next week, I plan to have both flooring and cabinets in place!

Are those just 2x 8' LED strip lights? Or are my eyes playing tricks on me and they seem to cover almost the full length of your 25' deep garage?

I do indeed work for Crew - I’m a project manager. I do equipment upgrades and new equipment installation mostly.

Congrats on the newborn! Looks nice so far. What part of Indy do you live in?

Thank you, I’m in the Castleton area.

I think they look like that in the pics because of my wide angle camera tricks - but yes each strip is 2 8 footers. The spacing wall to wall came out nearly perfect.

Yesterday I decided to lay a few tiles out to see how they look.....you can probably guess what happened next. A few hours later and I was 90% done. Crappy pics, I’ll get some better ones this weekend hopefully when the cabinets in place.

I can’t wait to get all this junk in it’s proper place - it’s driving me nuts.

Ok Cool!

So question.... Whats the difference in the "Clear Coat" and the "Fast Wax"... The Ultimate package include fast wax but the "Pick Two" choice is the clear coat???...... I seal/wax my truck frequently and really like how shiny the "Clear coat" makes it look when I run through. Totally understand that neither option can replace regular hand wax/sealer but just curious as to the difference in the 2 and why they are offered separately?

Love the Swisstrax by the way!!

The FW is the premium option of the 2 and has carnuba in it. Should give way more shine, lasts longer and also moisturizes plastics as well. Good product to use to maintain between hand waxes.

Saber cabinets showed up, all 1500lbs of them :shocking: And let me tell you, the packaging waste these things generate is something that you need to plan for. 2 full truck beds worth when including the pallets, and this is probably a average order. A larger cabinet array might have Greta Thunberg popping out of the bushes.

The 2 30” lockers needed to be assembled, and while not hard, it is quite tedious. A couple hours to assemble both.

I ordered legs for all the cabinets but they were not shipped with the order. Kind of brought things to a standstill. However, since Saber recommends the cabinets be sitting on a stem wall (or a secured piece of 2x6) and secured to the wall, I decided to go that route and forego the legs. Used 2 7/8” structural screws (Headlok) into the studs. In addition to that, the cabinets bolt together to spread the load.

So far I’m very pleased when the quality of the cabinets. Still hoping to have everything mounted by the end of the weekend.

Got all the cabinets mounted and I gotta say - this really brought everything together. I’ve dreamed of having a setup like this for years and blessed to be able to make it a reality. Next step - get everything fully loaded up and organized!!

Huge thumbs up for those and it will hopefully allow you to have a clutter free work area. Swisstrak looks fantastic.

One of the sacrifices I made with a cabinet setup like this is giving up a long top drawer for socket and ratchet storage. This was a big thing to give up for me as I had my mind set on a 72” box originally. To add to that, the top drawer on the 6 drawer cabinet isn’t deep enough for my Hansen socket trays. So my solution was the 4 drawer cabinet in the middle. Top drawer holds the 1/4” and 3/8” while the drawer below holds the 1/2” stuff. This worked out to pretty well and gives me some room to add.

Another issue is the classic problem of small parts storage. In my old garage I had these Akro compartments mounted to the wall. I don’t want them visible in this garage, so for now I have them mounted sideways in a storage locker until I can find a better solution. If I stick with this, I will add some sort of light inside.

Yep, I'm definitely in for this build. The Swisstrax and cabinets look fantastic. Great work!

So now that the garage is functional now, I’ll be focusing on some smaller details. That’s where I need some opinions - starting with the stair treads leading into the house. I don’t want to keep the particle board - any ideas on what I can replace them with that would match the Swisstrax?

Also, I am considering mounting a 55” TV in the garage. Problem is there is no obvious place to mount it, and I don’t want to put it up and regret it later because it never gets used. Any thoughts?

Other things I’m planning:
- LED under cabinet lighting on Saber cabinets
- Additional task lighting above cabinet/bump out area
- Adding outlet(s) I side cabinets for battery chargers

Looking great in there. Its always insane the difference modular flooring can make in a space. And congrats on your family expansion!

I'm not sure how you can regret adding a TV :). I use mine all the time to stream YouTube while doing anything in the garage. Back wall is an obvious spot but would depend on your final layout for that space. Just ensure to get an articulating mount and you can enjoy it from anywhere.

Organization continued today - I was thrilled that I was able to dedicate an entire storage locker to detailing supplies, which was definitely my goal :bounce:

I also added a quad outlet in one of the upper cabinets for battery chargers. It will also power my under cabinet lighting.
