Here things took a turn south, laid out what I thought was a 20 degree bend in column.
Welded it out, stood it up to see that it had too much bend in it.
It ended up with a bit over 30 degrees of bend.

Nothing left to do, but chop it up and fix the miter.

Real nice job.
Scalloped stand, looks great and is probably very rigid.
Tangens is your friend for angles.
Use a calculator or a look up table.

It is my favorite too, way old and made by Starrett.
One side is graduated in degrees and the other in pitch.

Here is my second favorite protractor, also a Starrett.
It is so nice for having the complimenting angle.
Patent date of 1904

I'm thinking something in the 4-1/2" to 5-1/2" range, with a fixed base.
A Athol coach makers vise would be nice.
Vises are hard to come by up here.
I set a offset Hollands on it today, it looks good, but that vise is slated for a different stand.

What you do with round and square stock is down right amazing.

I would love to see some of your previous profession work, I bet this is the "fun" stuff compared to the crazy projects you had to tackle.
