Hello. I recently bought two vintage tool boxes and know little about them. One is a 11 drawer proto with the 6 drawer topper with 2 - 80 stamped at the bottom which I assume that means it was made in Feb of 1980. I cant seem to find any other numbers on it. The other is a craftsman 9 drawer dated 1975 model 65039. I researched both and was only really able to find info on the craftsman and that it is rare. The both seem like really nice quality tool boxes. I only want to keep one which would be the most valuable.....thoughts???

hello and welcome! To answer your questions...i believe they are both about the same in value if the craftsman stack had a craftsman top chest. To my knowlege, all the boxes except for the popular mechanics box are made by Waterloo... in Waterloo Iowa. The proto stack may be slightly more valuable than the other stack simply because it is matching. If you were to find a matching red and grey top chest for the crafty, it would be about the same value. Both sets are not particularly valuable, but tool box values vary by region! Here is my red and grey matching craftsman stack that has the rare 12drawer top chest.

Welcome to the forum. I agree with the info Smokeshow offered up but I'll add that the Craftsman 9d bottom chest is far from rare. Desirable yes, rare, no. Keep your eyes peeled for a 10d top (not hard to find) or even better, a 12d top. Solid chests.

Do you happen to know the model number of that 9D bottom box?
I’m trying to determine what lock that one uses. I need a replacement.
Edit: I see you included the model number it you post. Hopefully I’ll be able to source a lock for mine.
Is there a prefix for that part number? Like 101 or 109, or something like that?

On a slightly related note, I was just given these two Proto rollers.
Model 9957.
Any idea of the value, if any?

I've restored many toolboxes. The old Craftsman boxes are tough and will last a long time, but Proto is tougher and the one you want to keep. Go ahead and crate up the Craftsman and send it to me for proper storage.

Seriously, keep the Proto. As far as value go's I would say that Proto stack, depending on where you are could go as much as $100 higher than the Craftsman.
