I picked up my Orange Bench Vise today. This thing is beautiful. I bought it because I wanted it....plain and simple. ($1,100 on sale for $900)

There is a few threads on GJ that have some misinformation, mainly because Orange didn't post any details when they started showing it off.
But the piston, slide nut, and screw are steel, not aluminum. The spindle screw is 3/4"-6 ACME and PVD Coated.
Here's a video of them building it.
Now, this is meant for 2nd op or fixturing, not meant for beating on and acting like a 200lb gorilla on Red Bull.
It takes 6" jaws that are compatible with all the Orange CNC Vises, which is what they specialize in. The vise came with aluminum jaws which is exactly what I wanted, but you can buy steel or make your own. They are dovetailed.
The vise swivels on a base. You can buy multiple bases and move the vise from one to another if you want. ($90 for a base)
The vise rotates 45 deg to the left, and 90 deg to the right.
The complete slide slide in and out (forward and aft).
The rear jaw is indexable and can be moved to the rear of the slide, increasing capacity from 5" to over 12".
As mentioned, this is for fixturing and what not. The NTN thrust bearing is super smooth. From Orange's website:
Clamping Force
The Orange Bench Vise applies clamping force linearly based on the position of the handle after a workpiece is gripped:
1/8 turn: 750 lbs
1/4 turn: 1500 lbs
3/8 turn: 2250 lbs
1/2 turn: 3000 lbs (max)
The maximum force of the vise is limited by the axial load rating of the NTN thrust bearing.
Anyways, I bought it because I knew if they stopped making it I would kick myself for not buying one.
I'll definitely use it...for delicate restoration stuff and gunsmithing and who knows what else.
The guys at Orange are really cool as well.
Here's some pics. It's a little shorter (height wise) than my C1 on a swivel base. My scale showed the Orange at 44lbs.
Cheers.
BTW: Do you guys know of any other vises built like this? I searched the google for fun and couldn't find anything else.
