pin vs pinless impact swivels

I just got 2 1/2 drive impact swivel adapters -- one Matco and one SO. I was under the impression that the Matcos were pinless, whereas the SOs had a pin. However, both seem to be the same design, with the Matco ironically showing where the pin was driven through the socket, but the SO being flush (presumably the "pin" is molded as one piece with the rest of the adapter?). Am I missing something about the pin vs pinless design, or did the Matco design change at some point? fwiw, PNs are CUP2BA (Matco) and IP80B (SO).

The pinless design is distributing the load at 4 contact points instead of the 2 points with a pin style. There is more surface area so they don't wear and stick like the old ones.

After breaking the pin design swivels every month or so I bought a pinless craftsman swivel. It has been going strong over 2 years now. Well worth its $40 cost.

I also picked up a set of craftsman 1/2" 17-22mm swivel sockets that use the same pinless design and have not had a issue with any of them.

You have the old design. The new ones are pinless (PN's CUP2BC & CUP2PC). There are two PNs b/c one has a socket retention ball while the other has a retention pin.
