Alright, Alright, Alright!

Welcome to the 10th annual Garage Sale Thread.

Yes, we have been following in the footsteps of our founder and patron saint, Jeff Moss, for what will be a decade at the end of this year. And if that was not enough, there are many of us who learned this trade at the feet of our fathers, mothers, and other family members and friends. Let us take a second and silently give thanks to those people who introduced you to this fine and necessary work.

Now, the rules.
  1. If it is second hand, it goes in this thread. If you find a new-in-box Cootie Catcher at a steal of a price while wandering from garage sale to garage sale, post up! SK screwdriver on the side of the road? Post up!
  2. Everything counts. Chairs, dishes, cast iron pots, books, along with our beloved tools and shop supplies, have all been posted in these pages over the years, and we absolutely love to see what in carnation you dragged home. We love stories and, even more, we love pictures.
  3. Price paid is not necessary information. If you do not feel comfortable telling others how much you spent on something, then don’t. No harm, no foul. But it does make the ever-elusive “You ****!” difficult to attain. And on that note;
  4. You cannot **** yourself. Or any variation of that phrase. It must be awarded by others in the thread. I do not care what your mother told you, that is the rule.
  5. Picker of the year will be determined at the close of the year, with next year’s thread host similarly chosen.

Before that first mad dash to be #1 in line at the estate sale, in making sure that your flashlight batteries are good before dawn patrol at the flea market, to trusting your gut on which garage sales are going to be the best, and knowing to arrive just when the thrift store puts out new merchandise, let us all hope to not find too many baby clothes!

So, who is ready to get out there and find some treasure?

I know I am.

Addendum: It is a standard part of our introductions to say a word of thanks to the previous years' host. But that does not seem quite enough with the spectacular work LesserSon has done during one of the most challenging years most of us have been through. So, I want to take this moment to reflect on what an outstanding job our former host did, and simply give him a standing ovation. But we are online, so just wave in the general direction of Pennsylvania.

Not midnight here yet, But Happy New Year anyway!

Congrats to BMW as the new host, and a heartfelt thanks to LS for a stellar year hosting in 2020; a year that will always be remembered, if not always nostalgically!

I never have the success that other posters to this thread have but I like to see what is available that I missed out on.

Perfect kickoff, Beemer!

My goals for 2021 are:

1. Not to exceed 450 posts.
2. If I fail at goal #1, not to exceed the number of posts that Outlaw has!
3. Find a suitable cabinet or display case for "The Old Stomping Grounds" corner of the Lugzsonian. (If you're not following my Virtual Tour thread, here is a link to the rickety shelves I am looking to replace. See Posts #102 through #104.)

With goal #1 in mind, I am combining the above 'year opening' comments with my first report! :)

------------------------------------------------------

It was kind of the first day of 2021 to fall on a Friday flea market day! Funny, too, because despite the owner putting up orange cones to block the entrance, some (only about a dozen) hard-core vendors and some (maybe twice that) buyers drove in through the exit.

My first small haul of the year (Lugz 2021_01) includes some diverse goodies. See Pic 1.

That adjustable wrench is a rare find. It is not branded, but I recognize it as a Lowentraut Mfg Co of Newark, N.J. based on the logo - < U. S. > - which is often confused as a COO or a martial marking. It is actually their brand.

Also happy to find the three (3) deep wartime Walden-Worcester sockets, a plumb-bob, the chaps, and the 100-foot leather-clad steel tape measure (Dietzgen). That holder is for a hot soldering iron.

That wooden box has some Allen wrenches in it, which I am hoping will have some sizes I need to complete an Allen hardware store display I have, but my primary motivation was the miscellaneous assortment of set screws and square-head plugs in the bottom. See Pic 3.

Finally, Mrs. Lugnutz has a fairly wide Hippie Chick streak in her, and I think she will like the discarded stone countertop cuts for mug and glass coasters around the house. See Pic 2.

Happy New Year, guys!

Great intro, BMW!!!

This is perfectly worded. 2020 probably aged each of us more than we know...

It’s time to get more stuff I don’t really need.

Ain't that the truth...

Yes. No belt. They're knee highs. Strap and zipper, and vintage, perhaps, but probably not that old. I should've just played it safe and said shop 'leggings'! :)

Recent FM stop results, 12/30 buy works for 2021 GS thread? Booth owner dropped the $42 sticker price down to $25 out the door.

- Craftsman 3-drawer
- Milton Blow gun
- Stevens Walden 3/8" Drive Metric Impact Set
- Hall Level & Mfg Works Torpedo Level

Spent yesterday cleaning them up, all will be users. The torpedo level will going to the construction tool bag as my other level is MIA, ugh. The box yielded a few fractional drills, Proto Impact socket, replacement x-mas light bulbs, and a 1990 Indy 500 Time Trials Party souvenir.

Anyone have any idea of the mfr date on the Stevens Walden set? Appears to be too new for Alloy Artifacts site to cover.

Well, normally something found last year would go in last year's thread, but you are here, and getting fresh blood is important so... Welcome!

I like Walden stuff and complete sets are always nice. If I had to guess I would put them in the '80s for a manufacturing date, but that is just a WAG.

The white lace and dumortierite slabs look pretty nice too.

Yo! I was literally just about to post a better pic asking for ID help from any professional or amateur geologists out there. Originally, due to a few of the flat pieces on top having cuts in them, I was thinking these were remnants or discards or what have you from a commercial enterprise, but now I'm not so sure. Is this box from the basement of a rockhound?

Where I grew up, there was a ridge behind our house that was chock full of quartz in the form of big rocks, small rocks, and sand, that everyone in town called "Crystal Hill." We would just stand at the bottom and wait for the sun to glint, mark the spot in our mind, climb up, and dig with our fingers. Then repeat. Other than that experience, a few geodes that I've picked up here and there, and maybe being able to ID mica and calcopyrite if I saw it, I have no idea what these are. Not only in terms of the names for the rock, but why they're in these shapes, and why some of the larger, bulkier, (not flat) pieces have been sliced into. Like I said, it almost looks like someone was collecting rocks, cutting them into these slices, and I have some rocks that are whole, some sliced, and some slices. Rockhound stash? :dunno:

After I remove some of the cooler ones that are the right size and shape for coasters, I was thinking 'Hmm, I could make a chess set out of these,' or giving them to Kid #4 Daughter #2 for jewelry making.

Is the "white lace" in Pic 3? What is the dumorteirite?

Picture three is petrified coral. What I thought was dumortierite is not. It would have been blue with black spots. The rocks are cut into slabs usually around 1/4" thick then cut to pleasing shapes for cabochons to set in jewelry.

Lugz,
You might not want to let Mrs Lugz read that “wide Hippie” comment as it could be taken the wrong way.

My goals for 2021 are:

1. Not to exceed 450 posts. :lol...

Simple, limit yourself to one post per every 3 pages. OK, maybe not that simple!

Finally, Mrs. Lugnutz has a fairly wide Hippie Chick streak in her...

Best use of a Johnny Marr guitar riff, ever...

I think I started the year off right! I’m hoping this is a sign that this will be how this year goes for me.

I literally searched marketplace and Craigslist for hours yesterday morning, because I had a free day. I was even willing to drive up to 3 hours. Needless to say I couldn’t find a deal I was interested in. So I gave up and went to watch the Alabama game with my father in law. Once I got there I decided to look one more time, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I opened marketplace and saw this Wilton 930 posted and only 5 minutes before. I didn’t know it was a 930,I only new it was a Wilton and it was about 5 minutes from where I was. I couldn’t believe my luck when the seller responded, and then gave me an address. My heart was racing the whole way there!

Sorry, kinda rambled on a bit,

I now present my $20 Wilton 930. Slide is stamped 6-47

Haven’t participated in a few years, generally taking a break from tool buying and garage journal but 2021 is a new year. Bought a box of tools off FB marketplace for the New Britain hub puller but it came with a Proto mallet, USA made compression tester, and a collection of other New Britain Pullers. Happy new year y’all

Nex...wow. The Wiltons I see are usually ten or more times your price, often with damage. That’s a huge bargain.

I'll never understand why every vise has to have hacksaw marks. That one is barely used and already, there are those saw marks.

Thanks. And thanks for the photos of some (of what I assume are your?) rock hound products, confirming one of things I may try to do with some of them.

Lugz,
You might not want to let Mrs Lugz read that “wide Hippie” comment as it could be taken the wrong way.
Well, the "wide" was qualifying the "streak" not the "Hippie Chick", but lucky for me she is as skinny as a rail. :)

Best use of a Johnny Marr guitar riff, ever...
A Smiths fan, huh? I'm generally hard on the overuse of sampling in modern music, but that's actually pretty good.

Slide is stamped 6-47
If you re-paint that I will hunt you down with the Hounds of H(ugh Vogl)ell! And if you re-paint it a non-original neon color I may be tempted to follow through on what it typically an empty, humorous online threat! :)

And it still has most of the 5-year guarantee decal!!
Beat me to it.

Second haul of the year (Lugz 2021_02).

Homemade speeder spinners (7/16" and 3/8"), an antique self-adjusting wrench I had never seen or heard of before, and a flip-worthy screwdriver with replaceable tips, a geometric C Craftsman logo, and a Circle-I code made by Stanley patented in 1942.
