Working on a somewhat light weight storage rack for sticks of material. They have been piled in the corner of the metal fab room for way too long. I can’t tell what I have on hand. I always have full sticks split in half before I leave the steel yard, so this is for 10’ sticks. It’s going on this wall, to the left of and above the sandblast cabinet. It will go just under the conduit. Material will go over the blue airline.

Four uprights. Two on the left go further down, over the bandsaw. Arms are 1.5 sq 0.120 wall 18” long. Verticals are 1/4 x 3 flat bar. Will be anchored to wall with 3/8 anchors. I don’t plan to put a large amount of stock on it.

I settled on a 3 degree up angle for the shelf arms. The Ellis saw made easy work of the miters. I made a layout template on the laser to make sure I put my mounting holes in the right place. Made in two pieces due to the width of mdf sheet and laser bed.

1/8 mdf is much easier to hold up to the wall. Also made small test pieces for the shelf arm end caps to sort out the size.

Now I have a lot of helmet time. I need the practice. Switched hands with the torch and filler. It’s going better having the filler in my dominant hand.

Welded all the end caps on. Started with TIG. I need a lot of practice. Switched to MIG after the first 4 or so. That dramatically sped up the process. Really loving the Millermatic 255.

Drilled the holes with the mag drill. The mdf layout template makes it all so much faster and helps with getting good results.

Got one of the uprights welded up tonight. I think this is going to work out well.

I’m no pro welder. Self taught. I dialed up the auto-set for 1/4” (thickness of the flat bar) and it really welded nice. Here are a few welds..

A buddy told me about a good powder coat shop. I’m planning on taking this to them once I’m finished welding it together.

Clamped to the door to see how it will look on the wall.

Nice project. Very good to see what you have on hand and uses a normally dead space.

That's exactly what I'm going for. All of my longer sticks are in a corner and impossible to get a good idea of what I have on hand. I also have a bunch of 4-5 foot chunks scattered around the shop. It will be nice to have it all sorted out and accessible.

Nice! Got to use your new mag drill AND band saw too.

I did! They both made this project a breeze!

Got the material rack back from the powder coat shop. Hung the first upright. Making the vertical out of 1/4” flat bar wasn’t the best choice. Made sense in my minds eye until I hung it on the wall. Added three more anchors. It will easily hold the minimal load I plan to put on it. If I had it to do again I would have used tube or angle for the upright. The reason I didn’t is so the air line would pass over it. I think it’s going to work out well. Always learning.

Crazy how the photo makes it look all sorts of bendy.

Material rack is finished. It’s always cool when a project turns out the way i wanted. Very happy with the whole thing. Power coat was worth the expense.
