Started having our 30' x 40' x 14' w/lean-to porch built. The plan was to get a post/pole/wood framed metal building done but with the crazy wood costs extremely high at the moment (and continually rising) we decided to go all steel. The building will have (2)10'x12' roll up doors on the front (30' front) and a 8'x10' rollup on the back for ventilation/access. On the 40'x12' lean-to porch side, one walk door and a 10'x10' aluminum full-view overhead door.

Here are some of the build pics so far:IMG_0638.jpgIMG_0666.jpg63709505276__32526F3A-3F74-478C-B6F8-51407D65BBED.fullsizerender.jpgIMG_0685.jpgIMG_0687.jpgIMG_0697.jpg

Looking nice! What kind of price differences were there between wood and steel?

Thanks!
Originally about $10k difference back in June of 2020. The price of wood built went up between 20-25%, since and with a 4 month lead time. Lumber is scarce around here...

Did it take a long time to get the building? You're off to a good start.
Unfortunately the steel shortage affected the time of delivery for my building. The contract was signed first week of March and delivery of the steel framing was a little over 2 months later. We are waiting on the panels/roof panels. Roll up doors have a real long lead time.

We just dropped off our deposit at Mueller in Willis and hopefully will have it delivered in about 3.5 months. Who did you use for concrete in Montgomery?

We're framed up!

We were supposed to receive and have installed the side/roof panels today but they were still being processed. Hopefully they will be delivered the beginning of next week. The builder still doesn't have a date for the roll-up door delivery. I told the builder without the doors, all I have is a overpriced/built carport...

Thank you.
They actually had three workers on the day they lifted the over-engineered middle beam with a hand-cranked material lift. Unfortunately they dropped that heavy beam and chipped the smooth concrete floor. I thought all along, the builder went too cheap with using such a light lift. The roof purlins were done with just two people and ladders.

Sheesh!

I think we're going to end up renting boom forklift to do the beams and purlins.

More prog

There seems to be a tough tome finding C channel for the purlins to construct the lean-to that goes on the left side and that is why we aren’t as far along as hoped to be. The builder said he found what was needed yesterday and we should be back to wrapping up the structure next week.

Nope! I keep getting told we are waiting on materials from the supplier…
Nothing has changed since June 20.
The constant rain has washed a lot of soil away from my foundation. If at least the gutters were completed I wouldn’t have this problem… also the downspouts were ordered wrong; too short.

Sheesh.

Yeah, you may want to plant some rye grass or something in the short term to help with that if you think it's going to take a while. That or lay out some landscape fabric or vapor barrier to cover it up. Losing dirt is no good at all.

All but one door jamb trim and roll up doors. Wrapping up power service tie-in and driveway can be poured.
Hopefully yours will go faster than mine did.
I am hoping it speeds along, but I've continued to hear a lot of chatter about slow downs so I will remain cautiously optimistic.

I will be getting MS Energy on the line here soon to see how far down the lot they will drop a pole so I can plan my underground.

Looking forward to seeing your project wrap up.

What is the color combo you used. It looks great. Sorry to hear about the delays and I dont know if it will get better any time soon. I am in the process of getting my permits for a 50x100 metal barn and I am worried about the supply shortages. My plan is to put the slab in then wait till spring and hope things have caught up by then.

Yeah I’m not sure when this will catch up. My builder finally returned my call and said my doors are ready to be installed. But he said they are not painted black as I ordered and will have a crew come out and airless spray DTM paint them black. I am on the fence with on-site painting vs. factory painting, but then who knows when the black roll up doors will ever arrive.

When you say MS Energy, are you speaking of MidSouth? If so, do you already have a service meter attached to your house or the new pedestal style at your property line?

The color combo I went with is charcoal grey for the siding skin, black for all doors and trim/gutters. The roof is galvalume, as I understand it to be the most durable finish (and I can’t see it enough to have the color contrast bother me.)

waiting is the hardest part. Once my slab went in, I didn’t want the momentum to stop

Onsite painting can be fine, just mask everything cause it'll go all over the place if the wind is moving at all.

Yeah, Midsouth. I have service at my house, but I'm going to be adding meter for the shop. They did my neighbors house the same way for her shop, so I am hoping they don't give me too much flack.

I got the call from Mueller today so I will hopefully start erecting steel next week.

MidSouth can put a double lug meter at your place unless you want a second meter for separate billing/tax reasons.
That's mighty helpful. I dropped my service app today so I will ask them about that option when they call me back.

Mostly I am just worried about pulling too much power from a single service when I'm working in the summer time. but I don't think it'll be too much of a problem. I'll be running a bridgeport and probably a 4-6' machine lathe, but likely not together. Plus the welder.

My house service meter is mounted on my house. The newer homes are ours here have a pedestal with meter at the front property line near the service (road). My options from MidSouth were either a new meter service or a new double lug meter on my house with larger gauge wire ran from the transformer that is 400 amps. Technically i think it’s it is a 320 amp service.
