Is this a good deal for a Snap-On box?

Matco va. Snap-On, which of these boxes is the better deal?

UPDATE - Dad loves the Matco, was a huge surprise

Bad picture, but it was the catalyst needed to get him to let me re-do the garage (detailed in another thread).

Which box is the better deal? Which is the better box? They look to be the same size/layout to me, but I'm new to high-end boxes.

Option 1 - Snap-On box (red/aluminum) year unk. apparently an older version of the KRL1001

Owner was asking over $3k and progressively lowered price in CL ads to $1600 obo, offered him $1000 on Friday, he rejected and said $1500 is his min price, but I think he needs to sell. Letting him stew over this weekend and will call tomorrow - 12/21.

Option 2 - 2005 Matco box (all black), apparently it's a MB7525

Owner was asking $3k for it, reduced price to $2k, accepted $1500 offer. Has a cover for it and states no scratches/damage.

That's a KRL1001 and it would have to be cherry for $1600.

I'm no SO expert so I can't speak to the model, but compared to what I've seen on CL around here, the price seems very low. Then again, that's compared to Phoenix, where most people on CL seem to think that beat up SO boxes are literally worth their weight in gold. :dunno:

Seriously though, especially if that's a stainless top, the price doesn't sound too bad.

If its still for sale at the same price 24 hrs later, not that great of a deal.

If its gone an hour after listed, pretty hot deal.

Most of the time the advertised price never hits good dealville, its the first person who makes a lower offer that the seller decides to accept.

Im with Merk on the price, one thing that jumped out at me is its in "good condition" not great, like new, scratch free and or ding free....for that price it better be immaculate IMO....if it is scratched dented price should be lower than what he is asking.

BTW price is a little high for around here.

I have 2 (older version) of that box. One I bought new 20 plus years ago when it was the biggest box available for 3800 and list was 4600. I bought my second one 5 years ago used for 2000. Do the math,

My advice is to go look at it. If has a stainless steel top (which it looks like it from the picture) and is in good condition (no dings or dents and only light surface scratches) then I'd offer around $1000. If the seller doesn't bite then just pass on it and call back in a few days to see if they have sold it. If they still have it then they might be willing to take your offer then. If it is sold then move on to the next deal.

What ever happened to your opinion of........?
"How do you guys justify spending thousands on a toolbox? I mean if I was a pro wrench I could maybe see it, but even used people still want $2500+ for them. For that money I could fill my entire garage with used Cman stuff!

I'm shopping for a roll-around type tool chest/cart and was looking at a Mac one locally on CL where the guy is asking $800. Found nearly the exact same thing for $50, but it's a Cman brand and not as pretty.

I really want a nice big SnapOn type box, but until I can get one for $500 no thanks"

This... I never said I didn't want one, I just haven't seen them for reasonable prices. If I can get this thing for under a grand I may buy it.

You have to go see it and see what kinda shape it is in. I was shopping for a box 6 months ago and ended up with a something very similar for $1500. It had a nice newish stainless steel top too. As others have mentioned, most of the time the asking prices are totally out of touch with reality. The seller's reality is that he paid a whole lot of money for the box. But he probably bought on time, with a very generous trade in on his old box and he probably got some generous credits for new tools. The buyer's reality is that he has to pay cash and has to decide if he wants to pay 3-4 times more for something that he can get by with from Sears or HF. Believe me, the number of non-pro people willing to spend that kind of money for a tool box is vanishingly small. For me, life is short and a nice box is one of life's little pleasures.

You have to be patient and watch the prices long enough so you know when a real bargain pops up. Watch long enough and you'll see the same boxes pop up again and again with unrealistic prices.

The old KRL1001 I bought this fall for I paid $1300. Was it too much? Most on here said it was, it's a local area thing, I haven't seen anything come close to it since, some KRL7xx for more money yet. The local area drives the prices.

A 1000 is a pretty decent price for that box, If you do buy it and decide to take off the Detroit and Cummins badges I would be happy to buy them from you.

I would bring $800 to his house and not a penny more. When it comes time to give him an offer it may not hurt if his wife hears. Even if he refuses you may get a callback next week.

I am not suggesting taking advantage of a guy down on his luck. From the picture thats all it would be worth to me. :thumbup:

edit: After seeing the better pics I would be proud to own that box for $1000

Those small craig's list pictures never do a box justice, of course that's how I've picked up some real nice boxes.

Man some of you guys must have deals out the *** wherever you are. Where I'm at you rarely see that size KRA priced at $1500 much less $1000. If I could get a KRL of that size for $1000 I would feel like a bandit.

You should have strapped it to the top of that Vette and brought it home with you. After all, Vettes are a dime a dozen but a good Snap-on box??? Priceless... Just make sure you pad the box before you strap it down, you wouldn't want to scratch it...the box that is... :bounce:

By the way, you will love that KRL box.

I'm considering offering $1000 cash.

If it's in pretty good shape that not a bad offer. For it to be worth what the seller is offering it would need to be excellent condition.

Also you might want to check the date of manuf. to find out how long it was in service. With the serial number snap on can give you that information.

For transporting I wrapped entire box with that stuff they wrap pallets with, put piece of carpet on top so straps would not scuff anything, and put carpet in front of box to protect from any rocks that might get kicked up. Also blocked wheels and screwed blocks into bed of trailer.

I'm thinking since that lip extends down passed the bottom panel about a 1/2 inch, I'd put some flat bar stock on each side of that lip and I'd squeeze the two bars together with heavy C-clamps. Maybe even the kind of C-clamps you turn with a wrench.

It could very well be. The drawer layout doesn't match either of the boxes in my 2001 catalog. But one thing is for certain, if it measures in at just shy of 41 inches high (with casters) then it's a KRL7002.

I just found it in a 1997 #400 catalog. It's a KRL1001. No "A" or "B" revision. My box happens to be a "B" series which is why I thought this one looked funny. My bad.

Yes, heavy C-clamps. There was a dent at the back of one of my drawers (KRLxxx) and I thought, oh just use the flats of a crescent wrench and bend it right back. Not! It is pretty heavy gauge steel.
