Well, I finally got around to building a few wall cabinets and adapting some corner shelves into a corner cabinet. I thought that this would make a nice build thread. Here are some photos:

I had some guys build the shells for me. They used 1" plywood. Trust me these things will be sturdy.

I screwed them into the studs and I'll leave the 2x4 underneath to help support them.

There are two adjustable shelves.

I don't know if I like the color. I was going for a Carolina-clay color, but I don't know if that what I ended up with. It might need a second coat.

Yep those look beefy. I'd suggest a clear coat of water based semi gloss on the insides of those wall cabs. and... No way can those cabs hold as much weight (size-wise) as they are capable of. I like them. I like jeeps too. We have an 05 LJ Rubicon

Wall cabinets done. I plan on making shels between the cabinet and the wall.

I used to have a '56 Willys Jeep with a 60 over 283 , 202 heads and a tunnel ram manifold . Went quite nicely if I remember correctly .

Jeeps were and always will be cool .

Alright, I'm now working on the big mondo - cabinet. I mean it's big! A full 4'x8'. It's 18" deep but 10" from the wall. That way I can store all my plywood behind the cabinet. I'll put doors on it and make it lockable. It will also have an open battery changing station with a power strip and LED lighting.

Here are some shots of the progress so far.

I used plexiglass on the bottom so that the plywood slides in and out.

So is that storage for sheet goods behind the shelf? If so, I really, really like the idea!

I wanted to show the right side of the cabinet.

This side has 1/2" plywood that's screwed to the workbench in multiple places and to a cleat that's attached to the wall. The top ply also is screwed to a cleat. This should keep the cabinet upright.

Hey that is a nice way to hide full sheets of plywood and still have easy access. And a broom closet wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Dangnabitall, thdewey! Why didn't you post this a couple years back, when I was mounting up my wall cabinets?

I woulda stole the heck out of your idea for sheet-good storage.

Here's a few more pix.

I've finished the trim (stained 1x4 firring strips). It still needs doors.
IMG_0190%5B1%5D.jpg

This is the charging station. I like the light pluged into the power strip. That way I remember to turn it off when I'm not charging anything. I also mounted a light under the wall cabinets. I wanted LED but Big Lots had a set of three independantly wired flourscents for $23.
IMG_0191%5B1%5D.jpg

Here I've built some open shelves between the cabinets. Ive also put some shelves between the right side wall cabinet and the other wall.

Update on some new cabinets. I'm building at least 5. Four are 32" X 16" X 72". One is a wall cabinet 32" X 32" X 16". I've decided to save some money by making the cases out of OSB and save the plywood for the doors.

I had to paint the wall cabinets above the workbench. They were suppose to be Carolina clay color but turned out salmon. Yuck! I couldn't stand it any more. I guess that all the cabinets are going to be dark sage green.

Oh, check out the new pegboard above the bench!!! I'm pretty happy the way it turned out.

Cabinets look great and you've included some good ideas! I like the green MUCH better than the "Carolina...whatever".

How about some post build thoughts?

- is the 1" plywood overkill? To do again, would you go with 3/4?
- Is the sheet goods idea working as well as you intended?

Thanks for the pics - love it.

The green was a worthwhile change. The cabinets look great as does the rest of the garage. Thanks for posting up the progress.

Yes the 1" plywood was way overkill. I just got a great deal on them. They were so heavey that I decidd to replace the doors and shelves with 3/4". It made a real deference.

Yes the plywood storage is working nicely. Now I need a place to store plywood scraps/partial sheets. Plywood pieces fill up that storage quick. It's perfect for storing full or half sheets in prep for a project.

By the way, if the clay color had worked out it would fit along with the "Jeep" theme. We Jeepers down in the South love running around in the muddy clay now and again. I've given up trying to wash it all out of the nooks and crannys of the jeep. It sure is fun though!

Hey, good job on your cabinets. I have the same problem with smaller pieces of plywood/wood. I mocked up this is sketchup from an idea in a magazine i got. Just in the middle of building it, should be good to organize all the shorter pieces of various lengths. Maybe one or two less dividers for wider sheet stuff.

Thanks, I need to build one of those. Now where to put it????

Sorry, my attempt at a little inside-Jeep humor. Only WWII jeeps (GPW & MBs) had 9 slots - I'm partial to them.

I do have this Jeep pic in my shop. I loved the show as a kid.

Also some pics from this weekend. I got three cabinets mounted and the face frames on. Without backs on them they are hard to keep square. Not really a big deal to me though.

I just realized that I never posted any pics with the cabinets installed.
The three bigger cabinets are spaced out about 5' for other types of storage ie bike racks, camp kitchen, shelves.
The smaller wall cabinet is mounted above a movable podium/standing desk.

I learned from GJ that for OSB, you use oil based Killz primer, caulk the seams and use two coats of a semi-gloss latex on top.

I like the green, but you could paint them to look like jerry cans..lol
Damn that's a great idea. Now I have to find a way to make this happen. Thanks.

Right now I'm working on building a spray paint can cabinet. I was inspired by a recent thread on the subject. It will be a separate build thread. I'm not going to take any finished pictures until I've cleaned out the garage after Christmas. It's disaster right now.

Thanks for all the complements.

In the first picture (0491), how did you make your bench top? Is it coated in something?

Thanks. Looks great!

Whole thing looks awesome. I really like how you spaced cabinets so you have open storage between them. Good use of space.

The workbenches are simple 2x4 ladder frames covered in 3/4" plywood. They are covered with 1/8" hard board. This is my replaceable wear surface. You can tack it down with roof nails or do what I did. I used 1/2" counter sunk wood screws. After a couple of years of paint and scuffs, just flip it over for "new" workbenches.

What would I do differently? I would leave 2 -2 1/2" overhang on the bench top to clamp stuff. Several times I had to find a much larger clamp to hold something down.
