This is a multiple stage project build.

I moved into my house as a single guy and it was perfect for my truck and motorcycles. 3 bed, two bath, 3 car garage on 1/4 acre. It was great until I got married and my wife and her two kids moved in. So my house got a bit smaller... no big deal, I'll just split my garage from a 3 car, down to a two car with a nice "man's room" office! Thats where the projects began.

jsw_100_9390.jpg

jsw_100_9487.jpg

So we started building a wall. I decided to put in a 240v circuit for my air compressor, a 20amp for the wall in the 2 car garage for my tools and workbench, then the one car side would have its own 20 amp circuit. Plus the lights would run off the existing lighting circuit.

In the two car we used the Behr epoxy floor paint. Took a few times etching it with muriatic acid, but it worked out great! 3 1/2 years later, it still looks good!

in the one car I used stick on tile to make it a checkerboard tile floor.

I soon realized that I needed more space. Moving wasn't an option at this point, so I worked out a plan to build the biggest shop that my HOA and the city would allow. So the plans started for a 12x24 shop in the backyard. Unfortunately, I don't have a wide enough yard in the front to drive a car in the backyard, so it'll be a workshop and bike ship, the cars will be up in the garage.

The yard when before breaking ground
jsw_100_0302.jpg

Many lessons learned. I was out of town when they came and did my slab. BAD IDEA... The butchered what was supposed to be a slab.
jsw_100_4219.jpg

Wrecked the patio too!
jsw_100_4220.jpg

It wasnt even level
jsw_100_4408.jpg

It was only 3 inches deep!!!!
jsw_100_4411.jpg

So I had to tear it up up and start again... Yes. Seriously.
jsw_100_4507.jpg

I gathered up some neighbors to help
jsw_100_4519.jpg

And we broke it all!
jsw_100_4534.jpg

Then hired a company to finish
jsw_100_5017.jpg

They filled two dump trucks with rock!

And the building began. I did the building of this myself with the help of some buddys. I bought a few books at Home Depot and figured it out. Yeah, really.

On to the inside.
Its 12x24 and I decided to split it into two rooms. One 14x12 and one 10x12 with a sliding pocket door in the middle. The original plan was to have the back room for the blast cabinet, parts washer, grinder, wire wheel, workbench with vice, etc. And the front room would be where I wrench on bikes and keep all my tools and such.

The front room would have two 20am circuits and the back room would have one 20amp plus a compressor 240 outlet.

The shop has a 100amp subpanel, two runs of CAT5, and one run of coax cable. There is a TV mount up on the wall in the corner where I will have CAT5 for Uverse. I can also hard wire into my home network.

jsw_100_5464.jpg

Unfortunately, I had to move a bunch of stuff in the shop before I completed the electrical or any insulation or drywall.

Fast forward 3 years... In a nutshell, my sister was found to have cancer in 2008 and died Dec 2008. My wife and I adopted her 20 month old son, but didnt have room to accommodate him. So my "man's room" was donated to the kids. My daughter and I worked on it for a few days and finished it off for her, and the new little guy will get her old room.

I split the one car into a small tool room for me and a small but decent sized bedroom for my daughter, teenagers need space. We plan to build a loft soon like in a college dorm room. heh She'll like that.

Nice place and great pics. Its common to see the man-space shrink as the family grows. :)

God bless you for sacrificing like you did so that you could take care of your sisters son. I'm sorry for your loss, but at the same time it seems like you've gained so much at the same time. Hats off to you sir and I'm sure God will reward you with what you deserve!

Thanks, What I didn't mention is the interesting twists. My sister couldnt have babies of her own, so she and her husband adopted. The 1s was from Russia in 2005 and the 2nd was from Vietnam in June of 08. Sept 08 she was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer and it was spread all over her body... lungs, pelvis, skull, shoulder, etc My sister died Dec. 15th after a horrible 3 month long fight. As my wife and I were packing to goto my sister's funeral in North Carolina, my wife found out she was pregnant with my first biological child! "The Lord giveth, and he taketh away." Then a couple weeks later my brother in-law asked if we would be willing to adopt and raise their little boy... Whoa... How does that work? Looks like my shop in the backyard could be turned into a dorm room soon! lol

So here we are in 2010... house jam packed with love and kids, LT1 AWD Jimmy, nearing completion, jam packed house full of love and kids... Im going to finish building my project truck and keep it so that the little boys will always have a hot rod in the garage as they grow up. Don't think Ill be able to afford another toy until they move out in 20 years anyway! lol I knew there was a reason I was building an SUV hot rod for the last 4 years!

These days my yard is looking a little more settled. The shop is completed on the outside, the garage is back in order... somewhat.

My new plan: complete the Jimmy's paint and body at work (I manage a paint and body shop). Bring it home and park it in the garage to complete the interior and trimout. To do that I need to empty out my new rather full two car garage. Move the workbenches and such to the backyard shop which will be used as a... uh... workshop! The back room will be for storage, the front room will be my workshop. PROBLEM... I never finished the electrical or interior before I filled the shop with truck parts, bike parts and lots of "stuff" a few years ago. So I need to empty the shop into the garage (again) so that I can have the city come out and do my electrical inspection. sigh... Then do my insulation, drywall, and lighting. That will give me heat and A/C! Whooo!

So... I have some big projects in store, but in the end Ill have a nice shop in my backyard, my daughter will have a nice bedroom, I will have a small tool room/closet, and a sweet two car for my project and maybe the wife's minivan!

After a couple years in the weather, the shop does appear to have not been prepped correctly and the paint is peeling off. dangit. I fixed it now, but you can see how I had been stripping them.

For Christmas I installed my weathervane. heh

Sorry for your loss... cancer really *****... especially when it comes out of no where and kills so quickly. Same thing happened to my Granfather on my mother's side. He was her step-dad and was 14 years younger than my grandmother (She passed in '99 at 73). He was 66 and passed away in March 2007... he was in generally good health and started feeling bad in December... was diagnosed with lung cancer which had metastasized and was pretty much everywhre. Same thing happened to my cousin at 25 w/ testicular cancer... came out of nowhere.

Anyway... I know everyone has cancer stories... good on you for adopting one of her sons.

wow man you have a lot of respect from me

Me too!

You have a pretty full house there. My advice is to keep the 2 car garage for your stuff rather than mini van parking. Having hobbies and a place to do manly things is actually helpful for your marriage, and will give you a place to teach things to your kids. Once that space starts getting used for something else it is tough to get it back

Where are pictures of the bikes, and you wrenching on them?

Sorry, but I have a personel question....
We have had something similar happen to a close friend, and almost to me ( testicular cancer)
Why didn't your sisters husband raise the kids? Did I miss part of the story? Was it a matter of economics?

Way to step up to the plate, by the way. I have had to put some of my hobbies/passions on the back burner for the kids, and in some cases I included them (motorcycles/golf) and quite frankly it made me feel better to help out others kids, then to be over involved in my own passions.
Good luck

That's a sad thing about your sister. She did a good thing by giving kids a chance, now you are really fulfilling your sister's dream.

You are a good guy for sure.

Eventful journey... Always wanted a V8 AWD blazer.. with a procharger!

After its all finished and driving. I would like to add a supercharger. More of that Typhoon theme, but turbos are a bit tougher to tune. I used to have a 99 S10 Xtreme with a Powerdyne supercharger on it. It was a blast!
Here is a video

good to see another s-series person going at it!

Yeah, my next door neighbors wife died with 2 months notice this fall from cancer. Crazy how we cant find a cure!

I enjoyed your post. You are a good man.

Is that a Boxer on the weathervane?

Yes, we have two brindle boxers. Daisy and Duke. heh

Thanks man, I still wish my Xtreme looked as good as your Colorado!

Very true. I NEED my space to work on my "toys". I always have projects on the go. And when I dont, I find something to make a project!

Here is my 02 Yamaha FZ1 in my garage (you can see my tool room door open)

My brother in-law couldnt deal with more than just one kid. He said that he hadnt bonded with the little ones yet. He didnt feel that it was a good choice to try and raise the boys on his own. His 5 year old is a handful... So I said, sure... Id love to have four kids! :wtf::headscrat

So I have done some more work on the shop. We finished up the rough wiring, installed insulation, and started hanging drywall. I also hung my pocket door and started installing my alarm system.

jsw_img_3201.jpg

A ceiling fan and two fluorescent fixtures.
jsw_img_3202.jpg

My pocket door installed.
jsw_img_3205.jpg

My disaster...
jsw_img_3206.jpg

My project was interrupted with the purchase of a new washer and dryer that we stacked and I put a cabinet beside and cut a counter top to fit on top.

Man you have done right by the world. You deserve a ton of respect. By the way how do you like the lt1. I ended up swapping my 95 ta to a turbod 5.3 with ls6 accy. The old lt1 was fun but i had a bear making comparable power to the ls series stuff with out compromising reliability or drive ability.

During all this, we painted my Jimmy! Once the shop is completed in the backyard, all my garage stuff will move out there. The back room will be storage, and the front room will be my "man room" workshop, and that leaves the garage alone for the Jimmy!

Just read your post, and again realised how much truth there is in the saying about walking a mile in another mans shoes. .....

Love the progress you have made over time, and the triumphs you achieve.

This colour is absolutely beautifull in the sun.

Thanks for the compliments everyone. Life doesn't always work out the way we plan, but thats often a good thing. The shop id slowly but surely coming along.

Any pictures of the boxers? I have two myself. Where did you get that weathervane? I need one!

Google "boxer weathervane" a ton of them come up. I thought I needed it on the shop! It looks cool and let anyone know, "Dont come in this yard!" heh heh

We have Daisy and Duke. Duke I got when he was 12 weeks old in Jan 1999. He is just about 11 1/2 years old. Hes my old man. Daisy we rescued from the local animal control shelter, malnourished, terrified, and sweet as could be. Duke is awesome and sweet ONLY if we introduce him to new people. Otherwise he is VERY protective of the kids.

What is the color (Blue) on the Jimmy? It looks great, is it SW paint I saw that on the side of the booth.

It is 1996 Corvette Grand Sport admiral blue. Yes its Sherwin Williams Ultra 7000.
