How old is your son? I never though about it but maybe it is time I teach my nine your old grandson to weld.

Cool looking bike, it does have that harley look.

it's never too soon to start teaching kids anything. my dad taught me how to weld when i was about 10, he alwasy let me watch him doing stuff, woodwork, car repairs, fixing lawnmowers, and even
i owe him for everything he showed me, he never knew he was "teaching " me anything, to him it was a natural progression to hand down knowledge.
i'm 51 now, never had any kids of my own, but ive tried to show my stepkids a little something. so many kids nowdays have no direction, and have no idea what they wanna do with their life.
they have good "ideas" but have no idea how to persue them, cuz parents didnt want to take the time i guess. my 18 year old stepdaughter wants to get into nursing, but barely has the skills to fill out a job application, cuz her dad never took the time to even talk to her.
today, with video games, internet, and sattelliteTV to keep em busy, nobody seem to care.
even my stepdaughter shows interest in the things i do, when you can pry her away from the couch :headscrat

i'll get offa my soapbox now...

The heavy bikes are training bikes. :bounce:

Kids don't care how heavy they are as long as they look cool.

I recall riding the "chopper" we neighbor kids build with 6' long forks made from galvanized pipe. I'm sure it was pretty funny watching us skinny kids try and keep the handle bars from going off center due to the heavy forks.
We did not care it was so cool !
Not as cool (or as nice) as your project

Nice project. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

We'll I don't have any "other kid projects", but I did build this for myself...

thanks for the suport and the links to some other sites.I hope we can get out tomarrow and get some more done.oh by the way my boy is 10.this is the kind of imagination that he has.last year he wanted to learn how to play the guitar so while at haydays snowmobile swapmeet I stumbled into a guitar pkg.brought it home and told him that my friend wanted me to paint a guitar for him and I needed his help to come up with a paint scheem so he comes up with the answer tha if he is into rock and roll he must like hot rods so it has to have hot rod flames and a hippie symbol. whats a hippie symbol I said? so he drew one for me ,ahha a peace symbol yea he said then it has to have the flames wrapping in and out of it.and dad the white plastic on the guitar looks bad what can we do about that? he cut out the stencils for the peace symbol and cut out the new pick gaurd with the band saw. then he said what if we put the swirls on it with the grinder. I was just standing there with my jaw hanging down thinking that he would have a typical 9 year ould responce like paint it red. so this is what we made.this was a realy fun project.

nice... don't make it so heavy he kid pedal it uphill or next he'll want an engine!!!

a look on the net, for a kit can make it happen.
(pedal when you want- let the clutch out and cruise up the hills)

E.rodz-I like the work stand you made:thumbup:
learning to Fab, weld, etc. are good skills to have.

checked out some of theese kits awhile ago and did not like the fact all the motor kits were made in china. we are going to build this one without a motor and if this one goes well we will save some money and build one with a motor.not much of a kit guy myself. just to picky I guess.

Here is a bike I built with my son.
He designed the paint scheme and built it on the fly.
The project started as a $20 goodwill mountain bike.

Awesome thread E.rodz. Your son is very lucky to have a dad like you to teach him how to build. I wish I had the opportunity to learn more from my dad. Your son will never forget the memories of this build and future ones. Nice shop too. I still love your swing-out english wheel.

WTF????? The headlight out of the maglight is wicked cool!!!

E.rodz, I have a question.......when your boy was plasma cutting....didn't the slag or spray pose an issue with him wearing a sweatshirt?? ( I have never used a p-cutter so excuse my ignorance? ) I mean no welding jacket or is it just about proper speed and air pressure??

Thanks,

-T

the plasma that we were working with is a very low power unit made for 10 gauge max. and doesn't spray that bad. but you need to start on an edge or a pre drilled hole or it will spray and teach you some new dance moves.the right speed is key on any plasma cutter though.

My Dad hated spending time with us and we always felt like our family had "less" than our friends did. However he more than made up for it one weekend when he was on a bender and took me and my brother to a few strip clubs - then to an all-night after-party :pimpflash :pimpflash where we both (me and my bro) got laid!!! THANKS DAD!!

Excellent!! Great stuff!! The best thing any guy with skills and experience can do is to pass it on to others. Especially to young 'uns. The only problem is that they usually end up being better at whatever it is than we are. DAMN KIDS!! (smiling)
