GE CFL's on sale at ACE Hardware

I just thought I would mention that the good GE brand CFL's are on sale at ACE Hardware for $1-2 each.

The 10W equiv to 40W, and 13W equiv to 60W are $1 each.

The 20W equiv to 75W, and 26W equiv to 100W are $2 each.

They have other specialty types on sale also.

The General Electric brand CFL's are the best I have found.

I've installed several CFL's in the home. I haven't been impressed with the longevity. They say they should last like 5-years...and I've had to replace several in less than 1-year.

It sort of eats of the power savings if they won't last.

I have noticed a BIG difference in the longevity between the Home Box store specials and the GE units. The length of time they last really depends on the number of ON-OFF cycles and the number of hours they are used, not just X years.

Like most bulbs, the less on/off cycles the better. CFLs are not really the best for an installation where the light will be on for a very short time such as a hall closet. The CFL in my porch light is never turned off and it is going on two years now.

I have used a few CFL's for many years. I converted most of my house back in Jan 08. I went in and bought $22 worth today to finish the job and have a few spares for those Home Box store units that have been failing.

I don't use them in the closets or in other seldom used locations. I have 5 locations in the house that are on dimmer switches that are always on full bright anyway that I will be converting. When I get done with those I may pick up a few more spares. The sale runs thru Jan 31st but they may run out.

If I remember right I paid over $10 each for the first CFL's I bought.

BTW, it may not do any good to stockpile any of the old incandescent bulbs. I had a few that had been in a closet for 10 years or more and they just popped like a flash bulb when I used them. Apparently they leaked a little O2 over time. There were a couple different brands so it was not just a bad lot.
