Hi guys. I'm in the process of wiring my 20x30 garage for lights, power and heat. So:

1. What size furnace would you recommend for 600sqft with 10' ceilings? I was thinking 45k but would like some advice.

2. The furnace will be a dedicated circuit. Should I go 20amp or will 15 suffice?

3. What should I use for Tstat wire? Is 2 wire what I need?

Thanks for any advice.

I just installed a 45k BTU Mr Heater in a 26 x 30 x 9 heats with no problem. Have R13 in cieling / nothing in walls yet. 15 amp will be more than adequate the fan is about 1/20th hp the heater uses very little current.
2 wire stat is correct. R and W terminals, heater has the transformer built in, all you do in hook up 2 wires.

Spec Sheet (note) 45K unit total amp draw is 3.0 :

I used this thermostat, it goes down to 40 degrees:

This one probably will work just as well:

Northern Tool has them for 399.00:

FYI: Heatstar and Big Maxx are the same except for the decal.

Here are photos of the installation:

10-4 on the electrical, although if you want it 'legal' the inspector will want it to be hard wired, that is to say wired with flex and wire nuts, not plugged in.
18ga wire is fine for t-stat, run 3 wires if you want seperate fan only operation.
I have a 1000sq ft, and the 75K mr heater works quite nicely. My dad has a hot dawg and i think the mr heater fan is quieter. I was expecting some noise, but i was pleasantly suprised.
I watched northern tool every week for like 3 months, finally it went down further than the usuall sale price and i jumped on it. dont get the flue kit online, its over priced. I hung the unit and wired the t-stat, but my electrician ( who was wireing the whole garage) did the high volt. I also dug my own trench and had the hvac guys run gas line and cut the flue. Everything was inspected. Also had to upgrade to slightly larger gas meter (free).

I used a RiteTemp programmable tstat from home depot because it goes down to 35 and others only go to 40-45, with out getting somthing special. I keep it 35-40 when im not in there and crank it up to 60-65 when i am. Heats fast and i dont cook when i stand infront of it.

The walls are r-13 and i have about a foot of cellulose in the attic, which really helps with retention. I have never caught the thing running when i get home and its 0 outside.

dont mount the t-stat on an outside wall (sometimes kinda hard i know) or right in the vent of the heater or it will never work right.
I need to share the pics though, ill take some tomarrow hopefully.

Ditto what the other guys said.

I plugged my unit into the circuit shared with the garage door opener.

45k is plenty for your shop.

Nice wall color and stripes. I'm starting my wall insulation and finishing tomorrow. I'm thinking of putting wainscot type paneling 36" then 48" of the prefinised white "garage liner" pegboard HD sells, then about 20" on top of the same paneling as bottom. I'll have trim painted contrasting color covering the seams. I'll paint the lower panels light gray, pegboard will remain white prefinished it comes in. I'm not sure what to paint the top 20" section. I was just going to finish it in the white pegboard but it might look too monolithic..?

Is it a '64 Ford ?

I see u have a pressure regulator in the gas line, why did u need this? I am putting in a hot dawg and looking to pipe the gas right into heater. Thanks

Bout Time's heater is propane . You may also notice the copper pipe feeding his heater which is a big no no for natural gas.

Hey thanks airmedic! I did not even think about the propane as everything around here is nat gas.
