Garage Journal Members,

This past summer, Mike Jefferys at "The Wood Works" (www.woodworks.com.au) in Sydney, Australia was able to sell and delivery to several Garage Journal members Japanese IPS "HLS-300" and "HLB-300" long pliers. Please refer to this thread posting about our purchase experience here: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=42774&highlight=premium+Japanese.

For the last few weeks, I have been communicating with Mike Jefferys about purchasing Sunflag screwdrivers (http://www.sunflag.co.jp/; please install Google Toolbar to translate the Japanese web pages). On his website, he is selling the Sunflag model number "888" and "215" tang-thru screwdrivers. Besides selling individual screwdrivers from the above models, he is offering these 2 sets as economical choices: "888-6V" and "215-5V".

The "888-6V" set contains 6 screwdrivers: JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard cross-recess) #1, #2, #3; and slotted 5.5, 6.0, and 8.0mm tips. The model "888" screwdrivers feature round blade (tang) through the handle for hammering; ergonomic, cushion, round handle designed for slippery tasks; and a magnetized, black finished tip.

The "215-5V" set contains 5 screwdrivers: JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard cross-recess) #2, #3; and slotted 5.5, 6.0, and 8.0mm tips. The model "215" screwdrivers feature square blade (tang) through the handle for hammering and CAB (Cellulose-Aceto-Butyrat), square, hard handle.

Please go to this section of "The Wood Works" website to order the interested quantities of the Sunflag screwdrivers: http://www.thewoodworks.com.au/shop/shop-browse/598. To convert between Australian and U.S. dollars, please refer to the "Exc GST" item price on "The Wood Works" website and use this monetary conversion calculator: http://moneycentral.msn.com/detail/stock_quote?symbol=/GBPUS.

It will approximately take a week for Mike Jefferys to receive the Sunflag bulk order from his distributor. Australian Post Air Mail shipping is about AU$25 depending on weight and volume. It takes about a week for a package to arrive to a U.S. destination from Australia via air mail service. If you are interested in the Australian Post sea freight service, it is about 25% cheaper. However, it will take 8 to 10 weeks for the package to arrive at its U.S. destination.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave, thx for arranging this! When do orders need to be placed by?

If anyone has good/bad things to say about these drivers, please share! I'd also be interested to hear about times when you've needed JIS drivers here in the US!

Scottmlew,

Mike Jefferys of "The Wood Works" did not specify an end date to placing internet orders for the Sunflag screwdrivers on his website. I would assume that Mike would place an order with his Australian Sunflag distributor when sufficient quantities have been purchased on his website. I will pose this question to Mike in an e-mail.

Thanks,

Dave

Mike Jefferys just informed me that the price for the Sunflag model # "888-6V", cushion grip, tang-thru, 6 piece cross-recess and slotted screwdriver set has been revised from AU$82.80 to AU$69.00.

I just got back an e-mail response from Mike Jefferys. Mike said that he will forward each Sunflag pre-paid order from his website to his distributor for processing.
Mike does not wait for a specific number of Sunflag screwdriver orders to come in before contacting his Sunflag distributor.

In addition, Mike charges approximately AU$15 air mail shipping for a couple Sunflag screwdrivers. For 6 to 8 screwdrivers, Mike charges an approximate AU$25 air mail shipping fee.

H there,
Mike Jefferys here in Sydney
Just a few clarifications about supply of the Sunflag range from us. We can source much of the range and are happy to accept orders from the USA. A couple of the items are special orders and not carried in normal stock. These can take 6 to 8 weeks to dispatch. We have no minimum order quantity. We only charge for what we send when we send and we do not use delivery charges as a profit centre. We charge at cost plus AU$2 for packaging. Australian dollars are worth around 90 cents US right now. We take Amex, Visa and Mastercard. There is still a Sea Freight option but this takes up to 10 weeks and typically saves around 30% on postage costs. Regular Air Mail takes 3 to 5 days.
Search our site using the word sunflag

Sorry if it's slow - we are getting a new site launched soon
Finally many thanks to David Edelman for linking us with new customers in the USA
Best wishes

wouldn't this be cheaper shipping wise if we all ordered and had them sent in one shipment to someone in the US who could split them up and ship them out to the final US destinations. Even giving the US "distributor" a couple of $'s per order would probably be cheaper than shipping multiple packages overseas.

Stick Figure,

Your idea of a Garage Journal member paying for the shipping up front, receiving the bulk Sunflag screwdriver order from "The Wood Works" in Australia, and shipping the appropriate screwdrivers to each of the Garage Journal members is a good one. However, since I am currently job hunting, selling my home, and going to school, I do not have the money or the time to be the receiver.

In addition, I believe Mike is sourcing the Sunflag screwdrivers from an Australian tool distributor. Last month, I received an e-mail from a customer service representative from Shinki Manufacturing Corporation (manufacturer of Sunflag screwdrivers). He told me that there are currently no Sunflag distributors in the United States or Canada.

mkdive,

If you are interested in purchasing the Sunflag screwdrivers from "The Wood Works", you can click on this link: http://www.thewoodworks.com.au/shop/shop-browse/598. I am going to purchase the "888-6V" set sometime next week.

If you are waiting for a Garage Journal member to volunteer in receiving the bulk Sunflag package from "The Wood Works" and separating out the orders for mailing to the participants within North America, I do not know if it will happen.

An advantage of owning JIS cross recess screwdrivers is that camming out of a Phillips head screw is very unlikely. As a result, JIS screwdrivers would have more success in removing rusted, painted, or worn Phillips head screws than using a Phillips screwdriver. Phillips screwdrivers were designed to cam out of a screw head.

Here is a link to Nepros Tool's website describing JIS screwdrivers: http://www.nepros.net/tools/T_features/screwdrivers.html. As you can see in the drawings, the JIS screwdriver tip fills more completely and sits lower inside the head of a Phillips head screw than a Phillips screwdriver tip.

If you would like to read more about JIS screws, click on this link: http://www.instructables.com/id/When_a_Phillips_is_not_a_Phillips/step10/JIS-Japanese-Industrial-Standard/.

"Ricleh" ordered the Sunflag "888-6V" set on 1/31/10.

On 2/5/10, I ordered the following:

- model "888", JIS #1x75mm screwdriver

- model "215", JIS #3x150mm screwdriver

- model "10P", JIS #00x75mm screwdriver

- model "20P", JIS #0x75mm screwdriver

Are there other members who have or will purchase any of the Sunflag scewdrivers from "The Wood Works"?

Thanks,

Dave

PB Swiss Classic Slotted Screwdrivers

In the above pictures, I was comparing slotted screwdriver blade thickness among the manufacturers PB Swiss, Sunflag, and Wiha.

For 5.5mm slotted screwdrivers, PB Swiss (0.8mm) has a hair thicker blade tip than the Sunflag (0.7mm).

For 6.0mm slotted screwdrivers, the Sunflag (0.8mm) has a noticeably thinner blade tip than the Wiha ACR (1.5mm).

For 8.0mm slotted screwdrivers, the Sunflag (1.0mm) has a hair thinner blade tip than the PB Swiss (1.2mm) and Wiha MicroFinish (1.2mm). The Wiha ACR has a blade thickness of 2.0mm.

In this thread posting (#32), "Superautobacs" mentioned owning screwdrivers with different slotted blade thickness and cross recess styles (Phillips vs. JIS) to be ready for the unexpected:

In the above pictures, I was comparing slotted screwdriver blade thickness among the Japanese manufacturers Vessel, Sunflag, and Nepros (made by Kyoto Tool Company or KTC).

For 5.5mm slotted screwdrivers, Sunflag (0.7mm) has a hair thinner blade tip than the Vessel and Nepros (0.8mm).

For 6.0mm slotted screwdrivers, the Sunflag (0.8mm) has a thinner blade tip than the Vessel (0.9mm) and Nepros (1.0mm).

For 8.0mm slotted screwdrivers, the Sunflag (1.0mm) has a thinner blade tip than the Vessel (1.1mm) and Nepros (1.2mm).

I did some surfing on the internet and found some interesting links.

Endeavour Tools is a large Australian importer of tools. According to their website, they just sell to Australian automotive and industrial tool distributors.

On this webpage, Endeavour Tools describes each of Sunflag's screwdriver lines: http://www.endeavourtools.com.au/online_catalogue/industrial_tools/sunflag__1/screwdrivers/phillips_drivers.

On this Asian automotive forum called "JDM Style Tuning Forum", one of the forum members "Sfs" describes his experience with Sunflag screwdrivers (post #18):
http://forum.jdmstyletuning.com/showthread.php?p=611473.

Lastly, on this Australian automotive forum called "Australian French Car Forum", a forum member "Roger Wilkinson" describes his experience with Sunflag screwdrivers (11/4/2010 8:21 PM):
LINK.

Wow, Dave, I can see that you've spent quite some time gathering all this information up. It's pretty interesting to see the varying tip thickness in relation to the width of the tip.

It goes to show that if you really want to be equipped with the correct tip dimension for a fastener at hand, you need an array of screwdrivers from different brands.

Ricleh,

Would you mind posting pictures of your Sunflag "888-6V" cross recess and slotted screwdriver set?

Also, would you please post any comments regarding your initial likes and dislikes about these screwdrivers (even though you did not have a chance to use them)?

Thanks,

Dave

Today, I received the 4 Sunflag cross recess screwdrivers from "The Wood Works" in Sydney, Australia.

From top to bottom:

- Sunflag "215" #3 JIS screwdriver
- Sunflag "888" #1 JIS screwdriver
- Sunflag "20P" #0 JIS screwdriver
- Sunflag "10P" #00 JIS screwdriver

Sunflag_Cross_Recess_2.jpg

Sunflag_Cross_Recess_1.jpg

My initial impressions are that the black Sunflag "888" #1 screwdriver has an excellent soft plastic handle. It is ergonomic and features a grippy texture. The cross recess is nicely machined and magnetized.

The translucent orange Sunflag "215" #3 screwdriver also has a comfortable, ergonomic handle. It is made of hard acetate. The screwdriver blade is unusual. It is square rather than round or hexagonal. The tip is also nicely machined.

I was charged AU$17.00 for Australian Post international air mail service. It took about a week to arrive at my home.
