Ive got a CV boot leaking on my 93 Chevrolet Z71. The joint is good. I have tried to replace cv boots on my 4 wheeler before and ruined the clamp. I just used baling wire twisted tight, clipped and folded back. (I know its hack but I use my 4 wheeler every day to check cows and had to have it going.) I know they make pliers for that, how do they work?

There are a few different styles of clamps & therefore there are different styles of pliers. Some wind up the clamp & then you fold the clamps ears over to hold it tight. Some squeeze the clamp & then press the excess that was squeezed together to keep it tight. There are some that just squeeze the clamp over little "cogs" till it's tight.

The jaws, you can see the little "presser" thing that sits behind them. There's a little "cam" mechanism in the hinge that pushes that forward when you squeeze the handles.

Open the handles fully and the "presser" retracts to make space for the clamp's ear to sit between the jaws:

The result, crimped perfectly, and the ear all squeezed in. The sides are pinched in by the jaws and the top of the ear is pressed in too.

Hope that helps explain it. :)

Moose,

I always wanted to know how those CV boot clamps work to secure the CV rubber boot. Your video explains everything. Thanks for taking the time to create the video! I really appreciate it!

I have always just used a pair of dikes myself. Doesn't look as good but does the trick. No reason for me to buy the right tool for something I'd need one every 4-5 years.

I've used end cutters before to secure the boot clamps.

This was all my very experienced, old-timer VW mechanic ever used. He'd grind them out to make a bit more clearance, but that's it.

I did the same on a couple of our old Audi 4k's for the front boots. Worked fine.

Diagonal cutters are a bad idea because they don't evenly tension the clamps. I've used my CV joint pliers on Oetiker clamps too.
