A question for the BendPak HD-9 owners…

I’ve had my mind set on a BendPak HD-9XW (wide, tall) for a couple years now but have been patiently waiting until the shop was far enough along before making the plunge. Well, I’m getting real close and I'm starting to get down into the details.

This first image shows 2 locations for the lift in ASYLUM. Eventually, I hope the budget allows for a second one, but for now I want to be able to move the lift around once or twice while I finish off this place.

The big problem with moving it within the shop is the two 6x6” support columns for the roof. I need to know if the HD-9 runway (WITHOUT the lift cylinder in it) can easily be unbolted and slid over towards the centerline temporarily while rolling the HD-9 around on the optional casters. Do you think this is possible? I want to keep the disassembly to a minimum, and would prefer to not touch the cable system. This next image shows what I have in mind. Sliding that runway over about 20” should give enough clearance to squeeze the HD-9 between the columns.

Please note: The runner with the big X in it is the one with the lift cylinder and all cabling. The power unit is mounted on the front post closest to this runner.

Absolutely. It has a wide and narrow setting as it is, and would likely move a little more than that. No reason you couldn't roll it on the casters with the ramp moved all the way over. I could take measures if you need them.

I wouldn't jump into saying yes right away. The runway can obviously be moved that far over, but then the cross tube is only held upright by 2 bolts at each end (suggest you buy better bolts than the metric grade 4.x bolts they supply anyway).

Odds are you can do it, but it might get dicey. The cross tubes are only bolted to the runway with tabs. With that much of a lever arm, opposite side of the lift, I can picture things not staying as square as you would like.

Another thing I noticed is that the lift is only easy to push when the wheels are pointed in the direction you want it to go. Otherwise it takes a bunch of force to make the wheels point the right way. Figured I would mention that since it looks like you'll have some maneuvering to do.

Obviously don't do it with a very narrow car on the lift!!!

Thanks guys.

From e-teks photos, it looks like the runways are in the "narrow" position and the extra bolt hole I see in the close-up view (last photo) is for the "wide" position? I think I can just see the bolt head that is currently mounting the runway peering out from behind the ramp.

Yes slowTA, no car on the lift! And I'm sure I can get my hands on some class 8.8 or 10.8 bolts when the time comes. Thanks for that heads up.

Correct. I'm pretty sure it will slide nearly to the other ramp. which is 40inches away on narrow.

Shopnut,

I think it will work no problem.

Sorry to go off topic here guys, but e-tek, can you do me a favor as well? What's the dimension from the ramp to the highest point on the RJ-45 with it lowered as much as possible? All my cars are lowered (with bodykits too) and clearance might be a problem. Thanks in advance.

It's 3" without the pedestals, 3.5 with.....I have caught the underside of a slightly lowered car, so one needs to be careful! Not sure if there's a lower profile one, or you mayneed to block low rides over the jack....maybe ask JSK!
