My own little "Garage Mahal" build ...

Well ... here it is after spending month after month after month roaming around here, looking at what some of the members of this forum have done with their projects. I took notes, got really impressed, got inspired and went for it. Took down the old 3 car garage and embarked on a journey to build my own little "Garage Mahal" ...

Went through a few different ideas, few different designs, had to make compromises due to the city's requirements ... Ended up being 20'x40' on 2 floors and 12'x22' attached ... but as they say, a picture is worth ...

Here is the old garage after spending a few weeks boxing things up and clearing the surroundings ... ...

Demo starts ...

Things are starting to clear up. I made sure to save the old lumber to be used later for shelves and cabinets ...

Couple of walls are still standing but not for long ...

Last wall is about to come down ...

Forms are coming in, it's slowly starting to take shape

Getting ready to pour the footing and the slab

Finishing touches and we're done ...

Just gotta let it cure and water it for a week or so and we can start framing

Now the fun begins ! ! !

It's amazing to see how quick it all goes up !

Really starting to look good !

You gotta love lumber ! ! !

Sheeting the ground floor before we start the second floor ...

It's moving forward and on schedule can't complain, gotta love it. There are so many horror stories about remodels or construction that it is good to have a good experience.

We'll keep you posted on the updates soon ...

That's all folks ! ! ! ...

Hard time figuring out the layout. Looks like the 20x40 backs up on an ally and the 12' x 22' will be facing your house.

How high will the ceilings be? looks like 12' in the double and 16'+ in the front bay. Lots of volume.

Does the project include living space?

And finally, am I screwed up or did you move that small building down by the power pole? In the first couple of pictures there is a blue port-o-potty there. And in the last pictures the small building appears.

Thanks guys ! ! ! It's been a great journey and what a project this turned out to be.

Hello Bib Overalls, yes yes and no ... Very good eye ! ! ! Yes, we did move the small building around a few times to make room for the slab. Yes on the sizes, the back part is 20x40 with 12' ceilings. Gave myself enough "head room" to eventually get a lift in there at some point in the future ... The "front bay" is 12x22 with 22' ceilings and is facing the back of the house. We started calling it the cathedral because of it's high ceiling, and no on living spaces. It's ALL garage, ALL mancave, ALL for some quiet time with the guys and wrench on whatever we might have going on ...

Here is the "casita" in it's original spot. Started out as a tool shed and evolved into more of a
relaxing room, a small place (9'x14')to take a nap

Had to unfortunately get rid of a tree to move it. It was actually starting to get WAY too close
to it. Had to cut the roof around it ...

After clearing it all it was ready to move it to a new location ...

After making a few mods we used a few telephone poles to move it around ...

It was quite a task and I wanted to take my hat off to some of the members of this forum who
actually moved full on "real" buildings/barns and so on ...

On it's way to it's resting place ...

We poured a little slab for it and will add to it at a later time.

Construction is still going on the main project and it's coming along very well

A view from the second floor looking towards the "cathedral" ...

Roof truss being delivered

We're slowly getting there ...

A view from the "cathedral" ground floor up to the 2 second floor ...

It's really starting to take shape ...

Looking good, 20'x40' on 2 floors you gotta love that ! ! !

More pictures to come ...

Thanks 993James993 and thank you guys for your support and comments. I don't think I would have gone into this big of a project without having spend countless hours here getting inspired by many of you guys, so thank you very much for all the informations available here and the inspiration.

Hello wormwood, OH yes I am in the U.S, on the West Coast.

Building is pretty much now all closed up and awaiting for scalfolding ...

Second floor, made a couple of changes and will be adding a couple of French Doors for
brightness and being able to air out the place when working on a project ...

Made a trip to my local Sam's Club and thanks to you guys discovered Seville Classics
and their full line of cabinets. Took a while to put together but what a great value for the price ...

French doors are framed ...

Gates got installed and we finally figured out the motor placement issue ...

Scalfolding installed getting ready for the scratch coat ...

Can't wait to get it started ! ! !

That's it scratch coat is now setting for a week or so, keeping it moist and giving it time to
cure before we move on to the brown coat

In the meantime we're moving on with the "Casita". Poured a slab and added a few
elements to the puzzle ...

Started also with the insulation ... The whole building has been framed out of 2x8 so I'll have
plenty of insulation once the walls are closed up ...

Bottom floor ... Garage door is installed 10x16, runs smooth and very very quiet ...

Second floor ...

Staircase is also coming up, we're not kidding around anymore ...

It's really starting to take shape ... Looking at the second floor onto the "cathedral" ...

It's always a little "scary" to embark on such an ambitious project but I have to say that so far it's been a great experience at every level. We are moving on at a great pace and everything is falling into places so I can't complain ...

More updates later ...

Thanks guys ! it is quite a journey as I mentioned before but a great journey, can't wait to be done and start wrenching ...

Dan in Pasadena I'm a stone throw away from you right here in Southern Cal.

More photos of the built, it's really starting to look good we are now entering a new phase of the project. Outfitting the inside while the exterior is still being worked on

The spiral staircase is almost finished, the hand rail
is coming next

Garage door 16x10 with a row of windows for more light. I was amazed to see how nice and
smooth these doors are. I was used to an OLD Craftsman opener with a heavy wooden garage door ...

Tiles have been laying up there for a couple of weeks giving the building time to settle ...

Wanted the second floor to look like an old barn so we used barn board rough side out
on the walls and stained them to give that look ...

Getting ready to lay the floor ...

Downstairs we're putting up racks to store all kinds of **** ...

Now that the paper's laid we can start with the floor ...

Took no time to lay the floor. Used the same barn boards as the walls
but this time with the smooth side up ...

Almost done with the floor ...

Used a couple of different wax to give it the old barn feel with different
color boards ... came out pretty good ...

It's nice to see a project coming along and looking pretty much the way you envisioned it when you started with it on paper ...

More to come later ...

Very nice. I like the weathered look inside. I am using reclaimed lumber to trim mine out inside. I wish I had been able to save enough to do all the walls though.

That barn siding is really nice. I love how it came out. Did you stain or finish the trusses?

Great build. Congrats on your new home, or at least where it seems you will be spending most of your time. That barn idea for the second floor is Awesome and really turned out great. Staining the trusses really adds to the feel. Can't wait to see the end product.

Wow. That is an awesome project -- especially that you found a way to do it in SoCal. The barn board is a really great detail -- I think I'd do it on both floors.

do you have plans for all of that vertical space in the cathedral or is it more for the "open"feel?

Yes I thought about doing that also, and saved as much as I could but definitely not enough to build the whole thing that's why I went with barn board that I stained and waxed to give it that look. I saved as much as I could and using it for added shelving and such.

I call it barn board, but I am sure there is a different name for it, it is basically 1x6x12 groove pine. I used the rough side on the walls and stained it and the "soft" side on the floor and waxed it

993James993
I waxed the truss, protects the wood and gives it that "weathered" look. It was quite a job and took quite some time I must say, but was definitely worth it in the long run

Ha... Ha... Ha... I like how you called it the new home ... even though it is a garage, I definitely find myself spending a lot more time in there than in the actual house ... if I get in "trouble" ... it'll be a nice "doghouse" to be send to ...

Yup found a solution. Have not dealt with it yet, been busy finishing the build, but it is next on my list. We will install the motors on the inside of the wall, go through the wall and will have to build a couple of brackets to connect the motor to the gates. Should not be too bad of a job. I will post picture as we get into it.

It's been quite a journey having to deal with the city, getting all the permits and the inspector but it's been fine and pretty much painless. We did by the book and got our final sign off, so it's all good. The bottom floor is going to be "slicker" (for lack of a better word) it'll be white walls and a variation of RaceDecks since I kept them from my old garage. I just liked the idea of having two completely different looks.

mustangmccance
I like the open feel even though it is kinda wasted space ...

AndrewBigA
Thanks ! Yes I though about the barn style lights but since I need good light to be able to work and see I went with fluorescents, I might add a couple of them here and there though.

Thanks again guys for all the comments, don't be shy to add your two cents, I am always open to constructive (or not) criticism, it'll only be beneficial to the final result and we can all learn from other's experiences and mistakes ...

That's all folks ...

What kind of wax did you use on the trusses? I am planning to finish mine with shellac. Did you use the same wax that you used on the floors?

Looks great!

oh I didn't think it was wasted space at all. I was just wondering if that was why you did it or if you had something more in mind.

Thanks 993James993
I used Briwax in a mix of Dark Brown and Ebony on the floor and mixed the color of the boards to give it the weathered look. I applied it with fine steel wool. On the trusses I also used Briwax in the Ebony color. On the walls I flipped the boards around and put the rough side out which made it impossible to wax so I stained them and I think it came out real well too.

mustangmccance
I like the mezzanine/loft look, I think it opens up the space over looking the floor below and gives it a more of a spacious feel to the whole place

The project is moving right along it's getting better and better each and every day ! ! !

That barn wood is really amazing looking, has me really thinking about using it for the inside of my structure upstairs now.

Back for a little update, I know it's been a while but a lot has happened since my last post ...
Such is life ...

Been moving along real well here on the work front and we are at the final stages of finishing
the exterior ...

The exterior is finally finished and we can move on to better things ... Came out pretty good ...

Slowly but surely, I am starting to bring stuff upstairs and it is a great feeling after all this time ...
Still working on installing fluorescents so gotta work with a work light ...
Oh well, it'll be done soon ...

This is really where I want to spend my time. Inside ... NOT outside ...
Been pretty busy binging stuff up, and it is now slowly starting to take shape ...

Another angle on the place towards the spiral staircase ...

The Seville Classic units are "blending" pretty well with the ol' barn look. Thanks to many
members of this forum for sharing their trials and experiences regarding these cabinets.
I don't even want to start thinking how much I would have had to spend if I would have gone
with some of the "other" brands ... Come to think about it, I would not have done it ...
These look great, work really well and are perfect for my usage.

Been also working on some patterns for the bottom floor with the tiles I kept from my old
garage and I think I finally settled for what I was looking for ...
It's been a fun process ... Here are a few examples.
The entrance being where the checkered boards are.
