I have a Dremel 300 (5 speed) rotary tool. The lock button wasn't holding the collet from spinning when I tried to change the attachment. I opened up the tool and found that there are two holes on either side of the shaft where the pin of the lock should engage. There was a groove worn all around the shaft, making locking the shaft impossible. Apparently, either I or someone else using the tool had been pressing on the lock button while the tool was running.
I went to the Dremel website, which is very easy to use, and quickly found the parts diagram. I thought I only had to replace the end part, but found that it is one peice with the "Armature & Bearing Assembly" for $22.00. Makes sense as the end part appears to be pressed into the rest of the assembly. I also figured I would order a new collet and collet nut as those were worn.
I called them up, and spoke to a lady whose name I can't remember. She told me that if the tool is less than four years old, it is still under warranty. I told here it was, but I didn't have the receipt or anything. She said it doesn't matter. I think they keep track of the serial numbers. She told me to send it to the Racine, WI address. I did, and about a week later received an almost new-looking tool:
And they even included that flap wheel as a free gift.
Thank you Dremel!
PS: My warrany was four years, but different Dremel "trim levels" have different warranty periods.
