Does anyone know if matco or a locksmith woill be able to make a new key like the one in the pic. The key does have a number on the back side that I guess was to be able to get another one made but the box is 15 years old now and I don't know how long they used this style key.

That key style is still in production, all you need is to get a hold of your local dealer or Matco and give them the number on the key, they can make a new one from that as long as their codes/number chart goes back that far.

Matco should be able to order you a key based on the # stamped on the lock/key. if they no longer produce that, they can get you a replacement lock and ket set....

Hiya,
I changed my CM box and rollaround to the cylinder style (pop machine type).
I got tired of co-workers breaking in (NO THEIVING, they would rearrange everything:mad:)
Cost under $20.00 back then (13yrs) from American lock and key.

Just a thread bump.

I have an older Matco box with lock no. MA56. (I think c. 1970's or early 80's). I had one key (I know I should've had a spare!). I no longer have that key. No success with locksmiths and the lock no.

Called Matco and they said I had to see a dealer. We've got no truck in the area, and any way, it seems like a real pain for both me and the dealer to have to bother with ordering a key through him. It kinda seems inconsiderate to bother a dealer over something like this. I'm surprised that Matco would suggest it and not have an alternative (like selling the key direct), esp. on older boxes.

Snap-On will sell you a key (or refer you to LDV for older keys) and it's been a pretty efficient means of getting replacements or duplicates for those boxes.

Anyone know if there's an equivalent to LDV for Matco or an on-line source for Matco keys?

Vinko, whats the model number of your box? does the key you need look like the key pictured above? or does it take just a solid, normal looking, brass key?

Solid normal looking brass. Found a photo of the name plate I'd posted earlier on the forum:

Now that's FUNNY! I'm sorry it was irritating to you, but I really enjoy that sort of practical joke. I can understand it is frustrating, though, when you are trying to make money but you cannot find anything. Getting the other lock was a great 'reverse practical joke' on them. I try to teach my boys that 'moderation is the key.' It's OK to do a practical joke a couple of times, but then move on.

Matco will no longer have any keys that will work for you. You options will be to order replacement locks or remove yours & have a locksmith cut a key.

So you have the lock, no key?
A good locksmith would be able to make a key.

Yeah, but it's getting the key out of the box. Or paying a hefty penny to for a service call.

Maybe I just haven't had experience with good lockssmiths, because I once bought a Kennedy used and had the guy make a key for the lock, and it just never really worked right. He made the key by "punching" it in to the lock. It ended up being easier getting a new lock for it. Perhaps this was just a bad experience.
