Notes on the restoration:

  • Degreasing with WD-40 then Simple Green.
  • Rough cleaning and rust removal with wire brush cup on grinder.
  • Reshaping and smoothing of anvil and jaws area with grinder and belt sander.
  • Finer cleaning with wire brush on cordless drill.
  • Planned on electrolysis, but it cleaned up very easily with wire brush.
  • New solid pins for tail piece and jaws, new socket cap screws for jaws and
  • main screw, new 18 gauge bushing to clean up the slight play when reversing direction, all from the local Ace hardware.
  • Primed with Rustoleum spray primer.
  • Painted with Rustoleum spray in hammered light blue (looked all over for
  • Verde Green without any luck).
  • Unpainted metal rubbed with Johnson Paste Wax.
  • Screw lubricated with Red Line synthetic assembly lube.

...and thanks to autopts71045 for getting me a new set of smooth jaws!!

Man, these vises are smooth! Even without any grease, the screw and jaw had almost no play and was one finger smooth. With the redline, even smoother!

I'm a bit hooked... already bought a second vise for restoration!

Nice work on the vise!

Uhhh...I have often admitted to ignorance on many subjects before, so if I'm making a dumb statement yet again, allow me to apologize in advance.

Anyway, that has to be the most "unusual" folding measuring stick I have ever seen! Or at least, I have not noticed one like it before, with the first two sections unfolded to reveal approximately 13" inches, and then the third section starting over again, with the first increment being a 1" mark? :headscrat Hmmm. Maybe I need to start drinking earlier today?

All the work on the vise and I get a question about the ruler? ;)

It's an engineers rule. Designed to be read in feet and inches... eg: "One foot, 4 inches"

The feet are shown in smaller red numbers, inches in larger black.
