No, but we hope to work out of one soon. Strange Days is moving out of the old shop and will soon relocate into this new barn themed shop.
Its designed to look like a vintage barn with a three story silo. The barn will contain the shop, living quarters and a drive under garage.
The first pic is of the basic building framed. In all there's about 6,000sq ft under roof.
We're doing all the work ourselves , so things are moving kinda slow. If you look closely you can see the silo on the right.

Here's a view of the silo with the roof on the ground. We'll crane it into place atop the silo on completion, The silo will have a stone exterior. The drive under garage door is to the lower right,

Here's a view of the silo lid trusswork... 32 sections.

Finally a view from inside the third floor of the silo

We.ve been bustin our hump to get this thing up before the snow flies... Wish us luck!

I have been in a "silo" that was converted into living quarters. It was amazing that the few interior walls that made up the hallways were curved to match the outer walls. They turned the existing greenhouse into a huge car storage place where he collected hundreds of corvettes. I wish I would have had my camera. That was back in the early 90's. It was a neat place, and so is yours! looking forward to seeing more!

The Garage under the house part is the regular garage for Chaz's wife to park her car, and some storage, the round from the silo is on all three levels.

The whole building is wood framed.

The mandatory "artshot"

I know this all looks pretty extravagant, but we dont spend money when we dont have to.
If we DO have to spend, we get the good stuff.
The entire cost is figgured to be about that of the average home. We are doing all the labor ourselves, and that is really where the savings are. It will take probably a full year to complete however.

It is looking great even if its not done. I like the totem pole. As far as saving cash doing it yourself really saves. We built our house a little over 13 years ago for 45k. We will be getting it paid off in a few months. We had someone to do the inital build, frame, siding, roofing but we did everything else. We have about 3000 living space and about 900 for storage in the attic. They are widening the road and getting part of my yard. They apraised it and from what I gather its estimate value is in the 300k-400k range. You won't loose money by doing it yourself.

I love the monitor style barn design. How have you decided to side the main structure? And what will you put on the sides of the silo?

The silo will be done entirely in fieldstone. The siding is concrete "hardiieboard" with hardieboard 1x 2 1/2 battens.

Yep and you can see Lolo peak from the second floor of the silo

Thought so, it looked like your some were near river road/reserve st. ??

I at times, I really miss Missoula :( I like to say Iowa is topographically challenged :)

OK, here's the latest. The entire silo will be done in fieldstone, as well as a 3 foot tall wainscot around the entire building.
I have a godawful fear of heights, but here I am 35 feet up in the air (harness on) putting up the stone. Dana and I have been on this all week, and I gotta tell you stone work goes SLOW. I try not to look down or I'll puke.
The look is terriffic, though at the rate we're going we should be done with the stone by mid October... (patience grasshopper)

You had posted earlier that the siding was hardi board. Is it a 4x8 sheet or are you overlapping boards to get the board and batten pattern?

The hardieboard comes as 4x8 or 4x10 sheets. Its a woodgrain pattern, about 5/16 thick, and heavy as hell.
The batten boards are also Hardieboard 3/4 by 2 1/2 by1 2 feet in length.

The fieldstone you're putting up really adds character. Awesome build! Is the rest of it staying red or are you planning a different color. Can't wait to see the finished product inside and out.

I asked because it looks great and I used a wood product 4x8 board called RB&B or reversed board and batten that is popular down here in the south. Also hardi wasn't out back when I built my barn. I'm thinking about building another barn just for my motorcycles and a game room and might use the hardi this time.

The walls will remain red, we are trying to paint all the Hardie board before it gets put up and then do touch ups afterwards, White trim and the metal roof is Black.

A bit of an update. We're still working on the stone. Here's the top of the silo.We have also completed the stone wainscot on the South side of the barn.
FH4.jpg

The old house on the property had to go as it was in the way of the new driveway. We stripped it of everything useful and let the backhoe at it.
I hadnt seen this much destruction since my first marriage ended badly. If you've never seen a house coming down, it's quite a sight!

Well , I havent posted any updates in a while. The weather here has been unusually beautiful. The old house is gone, and the place is looking pretty good. If we get another few weeks of decent weather we can finish the exterior and then move inside to work for the winter.

Its been a while since I updated... We're still doing rockwork. I thought we'd be done a couple weeks ago, but it goes pretty slow when everything has to be hauled up thirty feet before you begin the actual work. The weather is holding out for us so that's a good thing. Here's a couple views of the stone silo portion of the new shop. Dana has been the hero on this one and done most of the stonesetting on the silo.
One more week and we can move inside where it's warm!
