Hey Guys,

Been a longtime lurker over here, I finally decided to post.

Here's the story:

My cousin and I decided to revamp his parents garage.
This garage is by no means a working garage, maybe a wax and wash here and there.

We decided to make a show garage designed around the Jaguar XF

Specs:
Approx 400 sq ft
Condition of the walls are poor, and the floor was medicore.

Flooring:
Off White/No Flakes/ EnduraShield
Wolverine Coating via Alpha Garage (Thanks Fred).
Vinyl Printed Jaguar Logo on Floor

Cabinets:
7 piece Ultimate Cabinets

Lighting:
TBD (Thinking of 6 x Recessed Florescent Tube Lighting )

Toolbox:
Craftsman 12 Drawer 26 inch Combo
Again, Not a working garage.

Paint:
Sherwin Williams Rustic Red ( I prefer Benjamin Moore) (Not my Idea of Color)
Trim- Ralph Lauren Metallic Garden Twilight

Other:
Full size Fridge, (Wrapped in DI-NOC, to match the cabinets)
Build Small Wall to cover the water heater.
Build a removable enclosure around the A/C unit.

Time for the Pictures:

The what I was working with initially.

After some SERIOUS housecleaning.
CIMG3032.jpg

This picture shows MAYBE 25% of the amount of Garbage I threw out.
Rant: There was so much Garbage in this garage( Empty Cardboard boxes, styrofoam.) Drove me crazy, but made my job easier.(Less things to save)

Started Grinding for Wolverine Coating

Yes I was wearing flip flops, and/or no shoes.
I didn't have a vaccum to use.
There was a ALOT of dust.

After Grinding and a shipment of the Cabinets

Time for Some Bondtite

After LiqaTile, Endura Shield and Jaguar Logo

Two things pissed me off a little,
I didn't know that my floor had FRC or something like that.
It has fibers in the concrete.
So my floor has a bunch of little "dots" that you can feel.
You can't see it from 20 feet away.
But up close it is more than noticable.
But it is my fault, I should have checked for it before.

Number 2

The AC Unit developed a water leak right when the Liqatile was drying, so it got messed up in the corner.

It doesn't matter though, the fridge will be covering it.

Throw on Some Paint
-My cousin did this while he was partially drunk, So yes it does look like ****.

Then some Cabinets

Then throw in a Jaguar :)

Yes, I am going to do something about the lighting.
I will also take MUCH better pictures of the the Final Product.

I should update with lights in a a week or 2.

I need to make the wall for the water heater, and an enclosure for the AC, after that everything should be done.

I also will tally up all the costs and give a price out of everything.

I was against the red, and my cousin was for the red. ( We had a huge debate)
Please answer the Polls, and also reply what color you would have put.

Hey Thanks for the Reply,

Honestly the only reason we did the garage was for the Jag.

Yes they LOVE that Jag, there last car was 90's Accord.

Thanks, this makes my life a lot easier.

Could you please PM me your choice of color for the Wolverine's system?

I'll be going with a gloss white, neutral gray, broken up by a black 2x6/8 strip of wood.

Thanks!

I think the garage looks great. I don't have a problem with the maroon/red color at all. It's a little dark, from a working-on-cars point of view. But you say that's not what this garage was built for.

I like the dark red a lot, very classy. It would cost you more in lighting requirements I am sure to make it a really workable space, but I don't think that's a barrier in this case. Great work!

Miami area? Construction looks a lot like the house we had in South Dade County 20 years ago.

I think the red paint makes your garage darker and seem smaller than it should. With your floor color I would vote for a semi dark gray on the lower half of the walls and a light gray on the upper half and ceiling. The two colors of gray should be separated with a dark gray band about 4 to 6 inches wide.

White, British racing green, two accent stripes, big leaper on the wall without cabinets. XKR ALMS 2008 style.

Nice overhaul!

I'm on the fence with the color. It's "classy" looking, but like others have said it's not very practical for a working garage. Since that's not the intended use, I say:

I'm partial to red myself, but it's just too dark. You'd need more lights than what would be necessary than if your walls were a light color. +1 on lightening it up with a shade of light gray or maybe even two tone it with light gray up top and green down below. You got a leaper in and on the floor already, gotta have some British Racing Green to top it off :)

I didn't notice if it was posted, what brand of cabinets do you have there?

I like it!!! The only thing I would do though is build some kind of cover to hide the hot water heater and some kind of cover to hide the air conditioning unit, and add some baseboard around the bottom to finish it off. Then maybe a small table and a couple of stools to sit back and relax with a brewskie.

BTW....HUGE transformation from the before pic. Good job.

Excellent, nice work!

Is the logo vinyl and sealed by a top coat?

I don't think the red is too dark, but I'd add some accents in a lighter colour:

 Oak baseboards to the height of the step and a louvre panels over the air con and heater would look great, IMHO.

The red will look much better with more light. Its a nice color for a Jag hang-out.

I was thinking the same Miami thought as Bib. The heavy stucco with smooth bands, tile roof, royal palms... with no sidewalk, could be Perrine.

Good Eye, We are not in Miami Dade, but in Broward County
(Just a little North).

I also wanted a three tone gray paintjob.

The brand of cabinets are Ulti-mate, the link to them is in the first post.

Yes, we put the vinyl on top of the Liqatile (Color Coat) and below the Endurashield (Clearcoat).

If I were to do it again, I would just put the vinyl on top of everything.
Since I don't know how it would hold up to extended UV exposure.
If the Vinyl Fails then I can just peel it of and put a new one on top of it.

where did you get the logo...

I don't know the exact place, since my cousin had sourced them.
But he said to call a sign making company and ask them if they do floor graphics. If not they would refer you to someone in their circle that does it.

Thanks for all the replies everybody.

I do have one more question: What do you guys think I should do for the AC enclosure? (Has to be removable, to do AC work)
1.Louvres
2.Wooden Frame with Stretch Fabric
3.?

A little too dark for my taste, but you are the one who is living with it. I just like lots of light and lighter wall color will reflect it back into the room.

Looks good!

1. I like the louvres, maybe sheet metal with louves in them. Not wooden shutter doors.
2. It may collect dust and be flamable around the heat source.
3. Drywall with opening in front and a metal louver door.
Same for hotwater heater, metal panels with louvers.

What everyone else said:
PHENOMENAL improvement, big kudos!
Too dark but classy - drammatically improve the lighting
Louvered doors for the enclosures. HD has them for closets

Question:
What did you grind the floor with? - tool & grit (if that applies)

I like the color very nice to see a different color not in the light color gray to white for the walls.

Also this is your car hole make it look the way you want it. When it comes to sale time just paint it white.

Hey Dan,

The exact tool name I honestly forgot what it was.
But it wasn't any major brand (Bosch,Makita..etc)
I did get it at the Tool Rental at HD for 40 bucks/24hrs.
You did have to buy the grinding cup.

Sawtec Diamond Grinding Cup
They had two levels
One is lower grade ($50)(I bought this)
The other is higher grade($100)

After grinding approx. 400 sq feet it still has lots of life left, look at the picture.

Thanks Ironman. EXACTLY what I was hoping you had used. I've thought of renting that too but didn't want to put out the bucks& have It not work. I've got a big crack in my 80 year old slab. With settlement, one side sticks up maybe 1" at worst. Would this tool grind that down flush? It woul be 4-6" wide grinding for maybe 10' long. I plan on filling the crack (with what I don't know yet) then tiling ala Jack Olsen's garage. HD has some VERY reasonably priced tile that will work great for my purpose.

Hey Dan,
Just came back from work

I believe the tool has the capability to grind down 1 inch.

Except that it will take a VERY long time.

I have an A/C that looks like yours that am planning on covering up. Here is what I am planning... Its on my To-Do list when I finish the cabinet.

On the right side, run a 2x up the wall for a well anchored hinge point. Put a plywood panel up on at least 3 hinges to the 2x on the right to work as a door. Either notch the bottom of the plywood for the condensate, or put a 2x across the bottom and raise the bottom of the door over it. For the left side, I am planning on routing a groove in a 2x the width of the plywood (5/8" or 3/4") to work as a track. Mount a grooved track on the bottom and on the ceiling and then slide a second plywood piece in the groove to act as a left side wall. Magnetic latches are all it really needs to keep the door in a closed position.

This will give you a door on the face that can be opened fully and a panel on the left side that can be removed to provide full access to the A/C unit for service. Paint it wall color and it will disappear.

The unit services the interior and does not draw air from the garage, so louvers are not necessary. The duct on top is your supply and the return is from the box on the bottom, probably through a wall louver on the other side of the box.

What are the holes on the left hand side of the pic at the floor?

I personally have no idea, it's my aunts house, not mine.
I will assume that it is some sort of vent/water drain back hole.

Wingnut,

That's a great idea, I will most likely use your design.

The lights are going to be done in 1-2 weeks.

A/C and water heater enclosures are after that.

Very nice! I love your cabinets, something different than we usually see. Logo worked perfectly.

About the walls, they look nice but the only thing is that they make the room look smaller, and you'll need more light inside, because they will reflect much less then white or light gray ones. But as design - looks neat!

A massive improvement over what you started with. Not keen on the colour but fine for a 'show' garage though.

As others have said, better lighting will get the most out of it as will boxing in the AC etc.

I'd have gone for a green for the walls in keeping with the racing Jaguar colours, not British Racing Green though as 'proper' BRG is almost black. What many people think is BRG is closer to Brooklands Green.
