I need to get one and was wondering what brands / models some of our GJ brethren have experience with...I have so far looked at the HF one and the Lisle ones. Seems like the HF one is pretty hard to beat for the $.

I just got this one and I really like it so far. It has a hand pump as opposed to an air actuated drain. I decided on that because I could just throw it into the truck and go to the landfill and just pump it into the recycling tank.

In in this same boat.

I just ordered me a new 55 gal drum off of ebay. I'll get/fab me a rolling base for it, and then get me some type of collection piece and tube to the drum.

I've already talked with the local recycling place, and they will let me bring a 55 gal drum of oil to them, I just need to get it on my truck, and have a pump to get it out of drum. No problem!!

That Danmar one (8 gallon) at $54 seems like it would be fine for my needs. I am not running a fleet maintenance operation or anything so I don't want/need to build one around a large drum...

That Ranger one (18 gallon) w/pump seems like a good idea for getting the waste oil to the dump and into the drums there, without making a mess....also seems like it might be less easy to knock over. Hmmm.

This one from Northern is also interesting, in that you can use whatever collection container you want; and also I like the offset funnel:

Even though I'm not the original poster thanks for every for posting in the thread. Once I buy my lift I will be needing this thread for reference. I really don't need a drum but maybe that dannmar eight gallon might work if the comments persuade me.

whichever drain tank you get, make sure to get the 'heavy duty transmission drain funnel' to extend the catch area. that way you can place the whole pan, parts etc without making a mess. the 8 gallon poly drain tank is strong enough to support the heaviest pans, even differential gears. might even support a transfer case if you are careful...

Buy the 18 gallon from HF. I have it and is really a good deal and works great. You may not think so,but the 8 gallon is not really that much capacity. A few oil changes and off to the recycle place. I wait till mine gets almost full, lift it with my lift onto the back of my truck and then head to the recycle place. Whatever you decide is better than doing it on the ground with a pan.

Another vote for the air drained 18 gal. deal.
I've had mine for years now and found it on ebay for $120
shipped to my door.

From 30 years of experience I recommend that what ever drain you get make sure it has 4 swivel casters. Makes it much easyer to use. JMHO.

We just got a Lincoln unit at work. So fa very impressed comes with a built in air pressure regulator. We bought a couple cheap ones from Princess Auto and didn't have the best of luck with them.

That one is indeed very nice but I can't justify a $395 oil drain for my weekend oil changes...Certainly is nice and if I was using one daily, that one would be in the running.

Thanks to all for your responses and suggestions!

After looking at several different types, I decided I wanted a cylindrical upright with a metal tank, 18-20 gallons, that I could pressurize for emptying, and four swivel casters.

I was fortunate to find a listing on Craigslist by a local company called Broadway Lifts, for a very nice used John Dow 20 Gallon unit meeting my criteria and at a great price, and the owner (Mike Moore) delivered it for free, as well!

If any of you are local to the SF Bay Area, check out:

....and ask for Mike. Broadway deals in all manner of new and used automotive shop equipment. and Mike is just a great guy.
