Nothing major here.....just trying to get more serious about organizing the garage.....didnt like the piecemeal solution to nuts n' bolts storage I had going so I'd been sort of passively looking for solutions when this popped up on Craigslist:

and after some TLC:

Love the shallow drawers of this cabinet.....she's an old "Art Metal" made in USA piece....I say old b/c she is H-E-A-V-Y (!!!!!)....it's true that they dont make 'em like they used to! at least in this case....

That's gonna take a lot of nuts and bolts to fill up. But which one of us couldn't fill that up sooner than later!? Lol

When I bought the first plastic "bolt bin" i thought - I'll never fill this up. Said the same thing after the 2nd one.....

I figure the $30 I spent on this guy will buy me some time before i need more!

I have several banks of the steel standard parts drawer cabinets, and have one like yours, an 8 drawer. I find that I like using the 8 drawer better, and just got a line on another one to buy. The ability to store, glance across and locate, and take a small container of hardware easily with you to use is a plus.

Wow the grey really makes the cabinet look bad but when you add color it really looks good. Every drawer look like it's smiling does anyone else see that?

Can you tell me how you painted them? I picked up 5 large office metal cabinets I plan on incorporating into my work bench. I'm thinking of using spray paint or else I have the small foam rollers. Looks like you disassembled all the handles and extras before painting.

Everything that could come apart came - came apart, down to the last nut and bolt. Used a flap disc on the few spots that had surface rust (mostly on the bottom)

Painted 100% of the cabinet (inside and out - and all sides of the drawers) with regular ole' rattle can Rustoleum....used the "clean metal" primer underneath the gloss red.

I got a line on a 10 drawer (5" deep) Steel Case file that I will be getting. I have been looking for one of these for a long time. :)

I have one that came from a Chevy dealer in the 50s, I still use it in my shop.

I'll try to get a pic if anybody's interested...

Those are not that great for hardware storage. Those are for maps, blueprints, etc and the drawer height is only about an inch or two.
Actually, that's the type I'd like. By making some wood dividers into smaller compartments for each drawer, nuts and bolts could be easily catagoried and saved in like groups. That could hold a lot of nuts an bolts, as well as paper copies of FSM's, etc..

I wondered about that since there wasn't any dimensions posted.

The craigslisting in OH says 36" x 24" but doesn't say if any of them are height. If we assume that it's 36" tall and conservatively knock off 4 inches for the shell, with 8 drawers that still gives 4 inches height for each drawer. If it's 24 inches tall, that would knock it down to about 2.5 per drawer which is still a decent amount of depth per drawer for storing nuts and bolts. Obviously the 36x24 is probably missing the height and it's really just width and depth, but just trying to point out that anything over 2 foot tall would have a decent depth per drawer.

The drawer bottoms aren't at the lowest point of the drawer face though, so the 2.5" guesstimate is incorrect.

I guess if you want permanent dividers they would work. I have Akro bins in the drawers of my card catalog file cabinet that I can remove and take the hardware to the job I'm working on.

I was in the same situation. I got tired of going through several coffee cans and tubs of nuts and bolts. I found this on Craigslist for $60.00 (damaged rear corner) It's approx. 33" wide X 18" tall 11" deep" Mfg. by Durham, sold by Grainger.

Yeah - but each one has a sore beside it's mouth. I'd stay away from that one if I were you

Great cabinet and great paint job!

I had a stack of those several years ago. Ended up getting rid of them because they just weren't that practical. I have seen people gang the drawers together: weld the outer frame and cut the drawer bottoms out of all but your bottom drawer. Mostly I haven't seen it done all that well IMO :headscrat, but passing it on in case it might help someone.

I LOVE threads like this... so I just headed over to CL and searched metal cabinet... this is what I found!!!!!!
http://anchorage.craigslist.org/hsh/1949491950.html

I hope it hasn't sold, and they're willing to wait until monday for payment/pickup... I am out working, and don't fly into town until monday... ugh....

Man, I would be all over that for $25 bucks. But I'd leave the others alone for 600. In that price range, I'd be looking for some Lisle or Vidmar.

do you guys think this is a good deal for these cabinets????
http://anchorage.craigslist.org/bfs/1953763527.html

they seem like they would work very well for what i want, but are at the very tip top of my price range... and I'd like to get 2 or 3, but can only afford 1.... lol
just curious what yall think about the price, of if I should just keep looking...

Hey Doc, $600 is too pricey form my budget; but they do appear to be pretty nice. If it meets your needs and it's in your budget...to each his own. :)

it meets my budget if I plan on never buying any other cabinets or storage type things.... lol... and i mean NEVER.... :lol_hitti
it does say obo on the add, but I have seen enough threads here to know better to offer what I want to offer... 100 a piece, and I'd buy 6 of em. lol

still haven't heard back from the 25 dollar cabinet seller... it was listed on the 11th, so I'm assuming I missed out... :(
and I looked up the MFGR of the 600 dollar job... but couldn't find any prices... which usually means high end and expensive... but I'm not gonna pay that kind of money for 1 cabinet... my wife would kill me... lol
