After a certain point, it is an obsession, not a need... Have any of you considered seeking help from Ratchets Anonymous, or some other such help group? I can see the adds on TV now...... Are you married to a Ratchet Collector that needs help??? This is almost as bad as the guy that collects oil filters for a hobby... :headscrat

Okay... here we go:

I have:

4 1/2 drive

17 3/8 drive

5 1/4 drive for a total of 26...

and then 3 1/4 breaker bars, 3 1/2 breaker bars and 2 3/8 breaker bards that I can find.

There. That's all I can think of. And I have NO IDEA why I honestly own all this junk. :bounce:

The sad reality is that I have all these ratchets, but I am probably the weakest mechanic on this board.

The 6 1/2 in ratchets or even the 24 3/8 drive ratchets weren't alarming, but the 17 1/4 inch drive ratchets were a surprise. That's 47 total and one on the way from ebay!

This is just a sickness, you know? Just like alcoholism and off-topic posting.

There is help available.

Hi. My name is Will, and I'm an off-topic poster.

See? It's easy once you admit you have a problem!

I was fighting with the computer on my last response!!!! the whole thing didn't work , fixed it.

My snapon's are probably 60's vintage.

Have they refined the mechanisms in them since then?

That 3/8 is very course click, click click and you are 1/2 turn around....

Tom try taking your ratchet apart and putting some good grease in it. I did this with a 3/8s sealed head ratchet and it is probably the smoothest ratchet i have.

The absolute smoothest ratchets I own are the Plomb and Proto's. Every time I see one at a swap I will buy it if it's reasonably priced, under about $5.

They are my most used and the ones I'll grab before my Snap-ons or Craftsmans.

Yes.

Yours (you can tell from the round snap-on logo on the back of the head) are an older design. Current snap on ratchets are fairly coarse by most standards. 30 teeth. (12 degrees movement for each tooth). The heads are also thicker. They do this for durability: The more teeth you add, the smaller each tooth is, and just one busted tooth means it's time for a rebuild kit.

Yours is coarser. Before they started with the current sealed-head design they had 26 teeth. Yours, being older, might have even fewer teeth than that. I don't know. I've got a 1/2" drive version of that same ratchet from the 60s or 70s, and it's very coarse.

My favorite ratchets are Matcos AFR, BFR, and CFR 60-tooth ratchets. Very thin sealed head with 60-teeth. Very smooth. :)

...And those of us who do this for a living have somewhat of an excuse:

1. Duplicates are a backup in case one breaks, to get us by until the tool truck can come warranty it.
2. I may use 6 ratchets at any given time. If you know the order you need to remove everything, and what size all the fasteners are... you can lay out all your tools in order of use and fly through the job.

Changing sparkplugs on one vehicle I regularly service:

I stick a T30 torx socket on my 1/4" air ratchet...
A 10mm socket on a 1/4 or 3/8 flex-head ratchet...
A sparkplug socket & 6" extension on a 3/8" ratchet...
Another sparkplug socket & 6" extension on a 3/8-drive torque wrench...

And I'm done pretty quick. It's quicker to grab another ratchet with the socket you need already on it, than swap things around, drop them, and have an extension or socket roll under the heaviest thing in the shop. :)

TNToy ... you need to try out the Snap On F872, round head ratchet. It has 72-teeth and 5 degreee movement; it's one of the ratchets in my collection ..

I don't like round-heads in general. From SK, Snap-On, or anyone else. The head's too bulky. If I want a lot of teeth for a really tight spot, I grab a Matco 60-toother. :)

Multiple ratchets are nice for exactly what TNT said. Sometimes you need a fine tooth ratchet, other times you need a long handle. It goes along with ahving the right tool for the job. It can make life WAY easier

At home I've got 6 ratchets, 4 breakers. On the ranch we must have about 50 of various sizes (breakers included).

After reading through this thread, I have an woefully inadequate rachet collection:(. It definitely needs to be added to.

Right now my shop is torn apart, as I am trying to reorganize, and build some new benchs/cabinets and such. So I refuse to go digging to look (denile, don't want to know how big of a problem I have). Had some tools stolen a while back that I haven't replaced (not in the budget at the time), but I know of a way to help you all with your tool adictions. Send them to me:thumbup:
