Have you removed the head and cleaned the valves? Small deposits can really hamper your performance.

I'd buy the HF Pump assembly and install it. Then, I'd be taking apart the IR unit and getting the parts as I could and rebuild it. Once rebuilt, I'd reinstall and put the HF Pump on the shelf for next time.

I run the HF V-twin unit on my 60 gallon tank. It was 112$ out the door with the 2 year extended warranty. I figured I would give it a shot for the cash. That was 6 months ago and its still kickin. I figured it was run the HF unit or buy a whole new compressor so I figured it was worth the gamble.

I decided to pull the cylinder head. The bolts hardly had any torque to them and look here. It looks like the portion of gasket separating input and stage 1 output blew.

I believe this gasket is no longer avail.

What would be the best approach. Cut one out of universal gasket material or use permatex? It needs to withstand 140 PSI.

Is it a paper gasket? Hard to tell.
If so, I would try the universal gasket stuff.

Just go get some gasket material at NAPA that is the same thickness as the OEM gasket. Then cut one to fit. Once that's done, just install it. The cost would be about $3 for the material and you'll have the compressor back in service. It should easily hold the pressure.

What's the model number of the compressor?

Call up Portland Compressor. They will either have the parts, or can get them.

IR head gasket set is $135 and 7-10 days from the factory.

I made my own for about $5 out of 1/16" bulk gasket. (that's real close to the thickness of the original). The original looked like graphite. I hope general gasket material can withstand 140 PSI.

I also lapped the head on a granite plate just to make sure it was perfectly flat.

I rebuilt this compressor about 10 years ago because the reed valves failed. I think the mistake I made was too use anti seeze on the headbolt threads. They were too loose and that's probably what blew the gasket. I cleaned all anti-seeze from the bolts and cylinder threads and used Lock Tite Blue.

If it doesn't hold up it's off to HF. I'm not about to spent $135 for a gasket set for a 15 year old pump.

Those bolts should be installed dry, any compound will through off the torque value.
