I answered a Kijiji ad today and went to see a tool box I was interested in. I didn't buy it but I did end up with a No. 8 Record vise to match the No. 4 I bought new in the 70's. I picked it up for $75 which I thought was pretty good. It has some welding slag on it and the black stuff you see is something that has been melted on it (won't be hard to clean up). It's as free as can be and works perfectly. It will be a good restoration project.

Here are my old one and my "new" old one. The No. 8 is 21" long when it is closed and about 30.5" when fully open.

Question - Does any one have a good colour match for "Record Blue"?

You really got a great deal there. The No. 8 has 8" jaws doesn't it? I've kinda been wanting a Record in my own fleet even though that British iron looks kind of.... ungainly. :bounce:

It does and for some reason the No. 4 has 4 9/16" wide jaws. I have been trying to figure why that is for the last 35 yrs! :headscrat

They are good vises, I just posted a pic in the Vise thread of it and my smallest one made in Germany.

Thanks, JASTECH

I agree. The No. 4 has served me well for a long time. I haven't decided yet but I might put the No. 8 on my main bench where the No. 4 is and use the No. 4 with a hitch insert on a welding bench I am making. The No. 8 is way too heavy to be moving around!

Do you have a link to the "vise thread" you referred too?

Good Vise.

We had luck with our English made Record vises which had been doing quite well in a commercial auto shop environment.

Nice find, if you need new jaws Graingers carries them, around $35 a set I believe.
Thanks for the lead Keep. The jaws are a bit rough and one of the screws is missing so I'll see what they have.

Thanks lilredex. That IS a good match! I picked up some Valspar blue from Lowe's and it's pretty good too. I sprayed a bit on the front of the No. 4 vise and it matched up well with the unpainted back (see photo). I'm more familiar with Tremclad products so I'll pick up some of what you suggested and see how it turns out.

BTW - That's a good looking Land Cruiser ... and I'm a Jeep guy! We used to paint cars with Tremclad all the time back in high school and college (mid 60's / 70's). Good to see guys still doing it!

Last weekend I picked up a Record No. 8 vice. This weekend I bought a No. 3. They both work well but need a good clean up, paint and new jaws. Here they are as I got them and on my bench next to my No. 4.
