I'm trying to replace the spindle shaft in a Milwaukee 5192. Can't be that uncommon because it looks like the spindle bearings need replacement now and again.

I've got the tool apart but can't get the shaft to move more than maybe 1/32nd, which I'd guess is the spring allowed by the finger washer.

Need to remove item #32 here

Built a spanner to get the upper locknut (#34) off but that didn't get me far. Have the head (#29) off.

Just a WAG, but maybe the #26 spindle gear is pressed on the back end of the shaft. The illustration doesn't show a roll or tapered pin holding it on, so by elimination, it has to be pressed. Try a small gear puller or arbor press.

Yeah, I was leaning toward the spindle gear too. Thing is there's very, very little clearance to get under it and I don't think there's room on the sides for two jaws. I tried tapping the shaft out (similar to what an arbor press would do) with zero success.

Plus if you press it you're pressing against the bearings. I think it'd be better to pull the gear and not involve the bearing(s). I'd love to see what pro repair facilities use.

I completely agree it's a press fit. Have a new spindle shaft to reference.

I'm missing something because when I get the spindle to move the 1/32" I mentioned, the bearing and gear move together and remain equi-distant.

You need a bearing seperator to press the shaft out of the gear.

The two halfs get tightened up and the lip slides under the gear. Then you just turn the forcing screw against the shaft to press it out. Harbor freight has a set for decent price that some like.

It's a good thought and I appreciate the reply. If you saw how recessed it is into the housing and offset against the inner walls, you'd see this won't fit.

I did, however, get it. I put it in my Dake #1 arbor press (which I got for free) and the damn thing wouldn't budge.

I lightly heated the spindle gear w my MAPP torch. I hated doing this but knew I needed something to help me out. No go.

I heated it some more, but still nothing. I finally threw a cheater on the Dake handle and had to stand on a step stool. I got lucky and it let go w/out crushing the spindle nose housing.

Nothing light about this press fit.
