Older Matco Ratchet ... need a rebuild kit

First i apologize for not having all the info when i started this post, but i forgot the ratchet at work, and forgot to take a picture. So I will have the exact part number tomorrow.............

My Matco guy said no rebuild kit available, and offered me a new ratchet (of course not an 88 tooth) but anyway i love the feel of this ratchet so i turned it down. According to my Matco dealer it was originally made by Cooper.

Anyone have a source for a rebuild for me?

I've seen the wright version before but don't remember the part number for it.

edit:
looks like the 3482, i'll have to double check my part number on my ratchet. Or maybe let Matco warranty it and pick up a new Wright ratchet.

If we're talking about 3/8 drive (Matco BR8 ratchet)the Wright ratchet model # is 3490 and repair kit is part number 3491.

a Wright 1/4 repair kit is 2493 and a 1/2 inch kit is part number 4491.

Great ratchets. The dealer must of been having a bad day. Matco only offers their 36 tooth ratchet in exchange for the round head ratchet. I don't care for their 36 tooth ratchet. Good luck in your quest. :beer:

Your Matco dealer will get a credit for that ratchet no matter what he sells you. If he was good, he would give you a $73.10 credit towards the ratchet of your choice. You would then pay the difference. When he sends it in for credit, his credit will be based on what he sends in, not what he sold.

You can get a rebuild kit from Wright Tools. That is a Wright Ratchet.

That ratchet is obsolete,you will get the new style.I handed my Matco dealer a couple of the old purple square handle screwdrivers that were broken and I got the newest versions with no credit.

Honestly hes a brand new dealer so probably didn't even think of it and neither did I to even suggest it. Probably be a good option but i will check with Wright for the rebuild kit first. Honestly i would rather keep this ratchet working that get the new 88 even. I have a few Matco ratchets all ready but this is the only one i have that is this style so i would rather keep it alive than trade it in.

It is the 3/8 and yes 3490 not the 3482 I looked the website wrong. thanks Fedwrench

I just tried to replace my Wright ratchet #3490 gear set with my old MATCO BR8 gear. The gear from the MATCO ratchet fits inside the Wright ratchet just fine but when I put the gear from the Wright ratchet inside the MATCO ratchet the gear set fit okay until I tried to install the retaing ring. Once I installed the retaining ring the ratchet would not move. When I removed the retaing ring the gear was smooth. The MATCO rachet gear is a bit thicker than the Wright gear. The black gear set in the middle ratchet is from the MATCO ratchet. I tried the MATCO gear in both of my Wright ratchets #3490 and #3426, the gear worked fine.

Here is one more pic of my MATCO and Wright ratchets with origanal gears.Matco ratchet has black gear assy. and Wright ratchet has chrome gear assy.

The Matco is a Wright, but it has a single pawl, versus dual pawl setup that is on the newer Wright's. I've checked with Wright and they definitely state that they are not interchangeable. The old Matco(Wright) ratchets are my go to, my Dual 80's and Matco 88's stay in the box most of the time. I actually will grab an SK before the Dual 80' and Matco 88's,don't know why, maybe its all of the years of using them and relying on them.

My MATCO BR8 has a daul pawl just like the Wright the only diff. is the color and the thickness of the gear assy. The ratchet head on the MATCO ratchet is slightly thicker than the Wright. Looking with your eye you can't see a diff. The gear will fit only when you put the retainer ring on the gear binds up.

In wright's catalog they list more than one repair kit for those type ratchets. I don't think wright would make a Matco only version of their contoured handle ratchet but, I could be wrong. :headscrat

I just checked the Wright Catalog and renewal kit #3491(double pawl) is for ratchet numbers. 3400, 3425, 3426, 3427, 3428, 3429, and 3490.

The Renewal kit #3491 would work in the MATCO BR8 with a thinner or diff retaining ring. Or mabe Wright tools has a renewal kit not listed in there CD catalog.

I did a search and happened to find this thread. I have a BR11F (looks similar to the OP's ratchet but it's a flex-head with a longer handle),would the wright rebuild kit numbers be applicable to mine as well?

As stated above. I put a new dual pawl 3/8" wright mechanism inside my matco br8 ratchet. It worked but I need to get a thinner retaining ring to try. The original retaining ring from my wright 3426, and Marco br8 were too thick causing the mechanism to not work.
