Apologies in advance for the long post, but I decided to go ahead and tell my life story.

I just recently joined GJ. I have been doing a little wrenching for a long time (20 years) just on my cars and small stuff. To start with it was more out of necessity, in that I just didn't have the money to pay a mechanic. I was always fascinated by cars though and, of course, that eventually led to me modifying them - again taking to me wrenching. And the desire really went back to when I was a kid, always taking apart my Stompers (remember those?) and RC cars and hot rodding them (a fitting beginning for an engineer/gearhead).

I never really had a lot of tools, just your basic stuff (hand tools, a few specialty items bought when I needed them and some basic air and power tools). Back when I was heavy into Jeeping, I had a father-in-law with a fully stocked shop where I did most of my work. Some years back, let's just say I lost access to that shop. So now I am living by myself in a small house with a decent little two car garage. I had recently started doing a little reorganization in it and decided to restock a few of my tools.

I had been threatening to buy one of those big Harbor Freight cabinets for some time. I have gone in there multiple times and looked at them, asked if they had them in stock, etc. Never could pull the trigger for whatever reason. Maybe that I really don't have enough tools to necessitate a cabinet that big right now, maybe I was afraid my garage would start smelling like HF, something...

So, what tools to buy, then? I think for the stuff you use regularly, it is worth it to buy quality. Enjoy using it and probably only have to buy it the once. Honestly, I am just a weekend wrench warrior, so Craftsman or some such would probably do fine for me. But for some time, I have been really into these little German cars and have come to appreciate the quality and precision in them. As most Porsche guys know, what the factory and mechanics used to use back in the early days were Hazet tools. They were also supplied in the toolkits with the cars (unfortunately, both of my mid-90s cars have mostly Klein), so that seemed a fitting direction to go in buying my high end tools.

That's about the time I joined here. There are several posts about Hazet and they are quite well regarded. Also, another little thing caught my eye: The Assistent tool trolley. "Ah, that thing's too small and expensive, I really don't need it..." Well, that worked for a bit, but the more I looked at it, the more I wanted one, so I started putting together a list of reasons why it was reasonable to get one:

  • I can continue to use my other two small boxes in addition to this one
  • It is very portable, so I can load it up and take it somewhere
  • Resale will likely be very good on it
  • Size is not such that I will be stuck with it if I did need to sell
  • No HF smell!
  • Made in Germany, not China

And so on...

So, the search was on. I looked at several options (including bringing one back as a checked bag next time I go to Germany) and ended up making a deal with a guy in California. Just arrived today, but I snapped a few pics to share with the people here who helped influenced me to buy this thing. As I free up more space in my garage, I may go back and add that HF cabinet, though I will likely have to paint in black and blue. Bit for now, my little Assistent, along with my 190L and Craftsman box, should suit me nicely. Hope you enjoy some of the pics!

Unfortunately, my plan to stack these is not going to work out:

Probably it's storage area for now:

I read about this on the Samba, but while the top tray is very sturdy, the middle ones have a little play - this one has the most (anybody know the proper fix for this?):

Thanks, guys. The car and garage are dirty and messy, but this thread wasn't about them. I also wanted an inexpensive one, Canuck - unfortunately, I don't think they exist. I found a rough looking Caddy branded red one that I could have gotten for less, but by the time I restored it, I would have had a pretty good chunk of money in it and it still wouldn't have said Hazet (thus killing my resell if needed idea).

BTW, if I would have found one, I would have also strongly considered the Stahlwille Rollmaster. Another neat little cart with a nice history. Probably much more room, as well.

Congrats on your Assistent. I always figured those would go nice with a 911 and I guess I was right. :D
Those tray dividers can be taken out? (Maybe not the outermost ones)

The dividers can be taken out and moved to many positions. It's pretty handy for a small amount of tools, but don't think of it as a replacement for a large cabinet.

Thanks for the compliments on the car, as well. That's kinda my baby - weekend car.

yes, you are correct, inexpensive Assistents are like unicorns and mermaids. In my part of the world expensive ones don't seem to exist either (german tools aren't popular in eastern Canada for some reason or another) so it looks like i have to **** it up and pay the ghastly shipping costs plus the hefty price tag to get one in my garage. I don't have a porsche (yet) but i do have a 2011 GTI that would look nice sitting next to one!!

Not to sound like an *** but I feel if you have the money to own a Porsche you should have a real tool box and not a HF box. Sweet Assistent btw I really like the colour and retro style.

GT- What would you suggest? A Snap On? Nah, it's just a box. What I need is just quality basic tools and a few specialty ones. :)

Monte - Assuming you are referring to the famous old quote, that is excellent!

" Elford later recalled that the service van provided by Porsche contained only wheels and tires, and no spare parts at all, and that he complained about the lack. Hanstein, however, assured him that, “Porsches, even rally-prepared Porsches, simply don't break.”"

As I mentioned, this is not to take the place of a full sized cabinet, just a well built, nostalgic, portable tool cart.

You know, my Assistent is really handy. Well built little box that carries around a decent amount of tools, fits in my car , and goes where I need to go. But what if I am using it to be mobile and want to roll it out onto my driveway when it's dark?

This light is a very close match for the light that was available from Hazet some years back for the Assistent. I knew my Hazet dealer (like drug dealer, not like storefront) had this when I bought my 166N from him, so I got back around to buying this from him. Very cool little unit that increases the usefulness of my little buddy quite bit! Plus, it doubles as a pretty good photo booth. I also got a nice Hazet flathead from him.

Hey, in one of the pics, I think I can see that I left my dinner plate on your wrist :lol_hitti

The Hazet is sweet. It's one of the truly unique designs for tool storage and portability. Nice color scheme, too.

70s Omega Ploprof - I got it before the recent value increase.

Yup, I like the HZ. Not a lot of storage compared to a "real" toolbox, but very good for what it is.

I just shipped one of those Assitent 172HD to a Hazet afficionado in Texas, close to 100lbs that was not funny. At least not for the guys who have to handle it as air freight ;-)

That thing weighs 100lbs-wow!

Bart (or anyone that has one):

I always see the ads showing the Assistent in the back of a VW or whatever to transport around. Are you able to lift it by yourself with all of your tools in it? Roughly how heavy is it when pretty well stocked?

I lifted it in to the back of my 968 before - empty. Somewhat surprisingly, it fits. It weighs about 50-60 lbs empty, so as it's stocked now, I would guess double that? I haven't tried lifting it when full...

Too cool, would love to add one to my tool collection but it seems as if mine is destined for mostly Stahlwille. Maybe I need a vintage Rollmaster then.

I hope to get one of these someday! I am always browsing ebay.de looking for a seller who is willing to shop internationally on the cheap. No such luck, yet.

I've just had this luck, the seller was great, the Hazet Assistent was about 90$ and shipping about the same amount. Delivered in about 2 weeks to the door.

It is a great cart. Are you still wearing the Omega? I always loved the Ploprof with the mesh bracelet.

Very cool! I've never seen one of those but I just spent the last 10 minutes reading about them on the net. Doesn't look so much like a tool box as it does a really compact and practical tool cart. I like all the bins where you can store tools and parts.

So, I have an upcoming trip to Germany. I've wanting a Hazet Assistent for a while. Does anyone who has one or has seen one in person think it would be possible to check it as luggage? Do the arms fold down on all of them?

Any other tool ideas that are much more readily available in Germany? I have a local office I can ship things to if needed.

Check with your airline whether they charge you anything for it. With Lufthansa my maximum allowance is 2x32 kgs, so I could take one Assistent or two and no clothes ;-).
