Snap-On Box Value

Today, I came across an older Snap-On bottom box with about 11 or 12 drawers. It had an accordion folding front cover that pulled down over the front of the drawers. The lock was missing, but the hole wasn't damaged. I am guessing that the box was from the early 1980's. No wheels on the bottom, and I don't know if they were missing or never had them. To say the least, it will need a complete and total refinish to look decent. It was both dirty inside and out. The drawers operated rather rough, but since it was so dirty, I think that the slides might be OK if they were cleaned and lubricated. The fellow wants $200 for this box. It appears to be solid, but I just don't know what it is worth..... I didn't measure it, but I estimate that it is about 42" wide and about 24" deep. What do you think I should offer him??? Are replacement drawer slides available if there is a defective one?? How far back can you get parts for the old Snappy boxes??? Thanks Junk

Replacement drawer slides are available for the boxes, aswell as locks and casters. Any dealer should be able to order that for you. I would say its worth $ 200 bucks. Offer him $ 150 and see if he takes it, if not, just give him the 200 as long as you know that the box will suit you fine for whatever your needs may be.

I think I remember that box model. Is the rollup front aluminum?

I would do it for $200. As far as slide availablility, I believe they are a commodity item, not necessarily made by Snap-On. I replaced the (non ball-bearing) slides in a SO box of similar vintage, and although I bought them from the dealer, they had a different name on the package and looked identical to the slides in other brands of boxes.

It does have the aluminum roll up tambour door on it. Did they come with casters originally? How much weight will the non ball bearing drawer slides handle? thanks

One of my coworkers back then had one of those boxes.The selling point for that box was that the sliding door kept dust and dirt out of the drawers.The box did have casters on it.IIRC,each pair of slides on a drawer had a capacity of 150 lbs-if the deep drawer had two slides on each side,it was a 300 lb drawer.
That particular box sounds like it needs a lot of work-cleaning,paint(any dents?),new casters,slides and locks-only you know if it's worth the time and money you'll put into it.When you're done,you'll probably be able to buy a new Craftsman box for what you've spent.

I am a huge cheapskate! If I had the dough available to move into or even add an additional SO box like you described for the money, I would not have even wasted the time asking for anyones opinion, including mine! I would have paid the man the money and taken the box and run! Those are my thoughts!

Also, if you are missing the castors, sears has offered two reasonable castor packages for years, the cheaper for 35-40$ then the better castors for their pro series stuff, considerably more money than the cheap ones, but I am sure considerably less than SO. Also who would know the difference between the sears castors and the SO?
