Mid-Michigan Garage (Blue Collar Garage)

So I am finally getting to work on my garage. We closed on our house finally in mid-December and the garage has been used to hold a couple cars, my tools, and some misc. items.

This past week, now that we are (for the most part) done inside, I got to work on doing what I need to do in the garage.

Heres what I got to start with. A very nice 500sq ft garage thats half underground.

5091203496_8da77eea42_b.jpg

The bedrooms are above the garage, and the "beam" is actually the ducting for the furnace/AC - so removing that for extra height is not on my list. The garage is actually a really nice height.

The cables dangling is the previous homeowners way of routing cable TV to the bedrooms..which will for SURE be changing... Theres more than enough cable I don't know why they didn't try to hide it....

The shelving on the back wall was nice for when we moved in to give me storage for my garage items ---- but now that I am in there I need something usable. Having a 2x4 in your face makes for a ****** work bench. Never mind the fact they pieced it together using odds n ends they had lying around.

I've got to figure out a way to dress up the area where my breaker box is. Plain wood with a crappy cutout isn't going to fly in my opinion.

As far as insulation - the garage has held a VERY nice temp. It's been a constant 40 degrees even when its been -11 at night time here in mid-Michigan for a couple days.

5090606753_9a766aeb26_b.jpg

Theres another shot of the original shelving. The pegboard is nice to have for my most commonly used tools, plus extension cords and other items.

5267555480_2a995d0e69_z.jpg

Where the bike is in front of my wifes car is where my toolbox has been sitting once we got it to the house. As you can see on the right --- thats how the previous owner hung up rakes/shovels/brooms/etc etc etc... Gigantic *** nails that would double as rail road spikes based off their size! :spit:

That will be getting removed this spring.

And heres what I started building yesterday. My work bench.

I took down a wall in my house and had some nice 2x4s --- so with the purchase of some MDF and some nice 4x4s I have begun assembling my 8' long work bench.

The bottom level of the current wall mounted setup is leaving. (Most of) The upper level will stay as I do enjoy it for odds and ends that don't get used much. and the bench will be moving to underneath that storage for better use. The upper level will also double as a mounting location for some small accessory lighting to brighten up my bench when I am working at it.

The walls will be getting finished off as soon as the weather improves, with some drywall repair, tape, mud, and then a nice bright paint to brighten it up. The rail road spike hanging set up will be getting replaced with something more modular that I can modify for summer time and winter time duty.

Thankfully I have a shed so I can swap summer and winter gear for accessibility.

Also - Harbor Freight extension cord reel --- best purchase EVER from that store.

hrm. I am trying to identify some outlets in the garage.

I'm going to have to take a picture of them, but based off of description here is what one of em is..

It looks like your normal grounded let - but the right terminal ending isn't vertical - its sideways - and it's 220, not 110... Trying to figure out WTF it would have been for!?

There is a 220 outlet in the garage, but I am going to have to have it redone or remove it, as they shared it on the same breaker as the homes air conditioning...morons!

I think over the next couple weeks I am going to have to keep my eyes open for some shop lighting to replace the 3 fixtures currently in the garage that provide not nearly enough light for my liking.

That Honda is awesome!!! I got a 92 Accord going into rebuild and restore. Worst problem is it needs an ECM for the Transmission. Won't everytime shift into OD. Dealer wants just south of a grand to fix it. My 92 just turned 100K miles.

Hey congrats on the first house Kevin! Glad to hear you closed and are moved in. Sad to hear the TA is gone, tho. :(

Looks like a great blank canvas you have with that garage!

Yeah - T/A is gone... I got to the point where I wanted to do so much more with the car but couldn't bring myself to butching such a clean *** southern car being how hard they are to come across... What I really wanted was something stupid like my old 86 LX Mustang. This is the best of both worlds for me with a 306/5spd combo on a car thats a bit more common and a bit cheaper to get to where I want it. Don't worry, I'll have to bring it to an MI F-Body Event just to get their heart rates going a bit when they see a Ford pull up like the last time I showed up on the forum with my blue car! lol!

Hows married life and home ownership treating you????

You have the start to a nice home garage. I like the 84GT, any pics of the old 86 ?

As far as replacing the lights, I'd recommend using some T8 strip lights. The strip lilghts don't have reflectors like the regular shop lights. If you paint the ceiling white, it'll be perfect. I hung 4 bulb T8 fixtures in the refurb while doing my garage. It'll also save a little head room since tehy can be mounted right to the ceiling and not hung from chains.
Here's a pic for you.

I like those T8 fixtures you have there. I will probably end up going that route. Where did you get yours?

Also - yeah, I'll be doing more pics of the 84 as I work on it but I'll post some up in the AM with some pics of my old 86 as well.

Yah - I ended up buying 2 4 foot long T8 fixtures to start with ... Went to my inlaws house and talking to my father in law over dinner and he says "Hey, I've got a 4 foot light in my garage that came as part of an auction I bought... It's new and never opened.. It's yours now."

--- So now I also have a 4 foot T12 dual bulb fixture that plugs in to an outlet... I'm debating about mounting it too the wall so I can have it aimed at an angle to point at the side of the cars I am working on for added light or if I want to mount it above my work bench.

I did quite a bit of work today and will be uploading pics off my phone. I've got some leftover MDF from my workbench build and will be replacing the above bench shelving with that.

Heres what got done today. No flash was used in these pictures. It's nice and bright in the back half of my garage now!

Also - I did the galvanized flashing idea for the top of my bench as Jack suggested in another thread. So far it's AWESOME. I massaged and formed it to fold underneath the edges of the top of the bench as to be one piece across the top and it only has one edge on it at the front, which is surprisingly dull so I am not toooo concerned with covering it up yet.

The cabinet I picked up free - it was from a kitchen someone was remodeling. Nothing else was left. It serves me well so far for holding all my car cleaning gear + lubes and greases.

I still have LOTS of organizing to do.

Also - I took the lamp from my father in law and set it on an angle above the work bench. It lights up my bench nicely for my electrical/soldering I do and it also provides some nice light if I pull the car in forward to give me some extra light underneath the hood.

Looks great. In my last "real" garage I tried the flashing bench top and just never did a very good job with it. Your results will have me trying it again.

Thanks. It's def worth it!

Went to Menards this last evening on my way home from work and picked up an 8 foot T8 setup and bulbs to mount in the front half of my garage. This should brighten it up pretty good out there!

my only two cents would be to relocate the stereo and cord reel to somewhere higher. Just to give you maximum bench space. In my garage I actually keep the stereo far away from my bench...right next to the door...where my wife hears it and gets pissed.

I know, I was thinking that last night... I'm trying to come up with a solution --- possibly to the top of my toolbox - but that would take up space in front of my pegboard.... I'd like to keep it against the back wall without being too high up. I'll figure out something unique for it...

Once I finish my cars interior and get those seats out of the way I'll have some more space :D

I opted for the cord reel to be where it is as its centered in the garage between both cars in that spot. If I need the space I just turn it so its against the wall.

Haha no problems man - you're more than welcome to hang with us out on Woodward. Married life, meh not much has changed. Home ownership - man... totally overrated, atleast when the house is built in the 70's and has so many little things to fix. :lol_hitti

**** ! I just realized something. Those T8 fixtures I bought at Menards created some radio interference with my radio. I hope it doesn't bother yours.

As long as it doesn't interfere with MP3 or CD playback I'll be a-OK. Thanks tho!

How wide is the flashing, and where did you pick it up? My first project here is going to be building a workbench.

Hi Quick 86,

Just a thought, if you haven't already, you might want to cut a vent or two into that heater duct running through your ceiling. might get you even better working temp in the garage.

At little to no extra cost.

Except for the increased heating bill... :headscrat

Maybe down the road - right now I've got a 55000btu propane heater that gets it up to 60+ in 20 minutes or less... All I do is fire it up, go inside, have lunch or whatever, then go out and its ready to rock. Maybe down the road but I've got to replace my garage doors before I do anything like that.

Oy. Been doing a bunch of work. I've got to update this. I am getting ready to mud/sand/prep the drywall for paint. I was thinking about spraying it instead of rolling it since I finally got my first personal air compressor! :D

Has anyone got any recommendations for me? I'm thinking I'll spray white primer on the walls and ceiling. Then white paint... Then my detail work will be done by hand.

Opinions?

Added power and got my extension cord reel mounted to the ceiling.
Added a bar and shelf in the back left corner of my garage as a place to hang dry my detailing towels for the cars.

Scored some kitchen wall cabinets that I have been working...

1 cabinet to the front corner of the garage for my spare Mustang and muscle car parts.

1 cabinet in the back right corner for all my maintenance (Oil, oil filters, air filters, headlight bulbs) goodies...

Modified a cabinet to mount sideways with hinges --- I use it to house my repair books, reference books, parts books, catalogs...

Started re-routing the cable TV lines to be a bit more hidden/discrete...

Added a wall mount to get my mountain bike up and out of the way and I put the wife's bike underneath it...

Still have LOTS to do, but at least I am getting organized... My garage is getting brighter with better lighting too.

Oh. Also picked up a shop truck.

89 Chevy C1500, SBC, 700R4, RCLB... Been working on it as well.

Okay. I've learned what works and doesn't work in my garage. You've all seen essentially what my back wall looks like right now, but I am going to change it even further! :)

Here is what I came up with last night in my head. Put it on "paper" this morning in a CAD drawing...... Go easy on me, I've never used CAD or anything like it, and to be specific I made this to scale using freeware/Google SketchUp...

What does everyone think? I added slightly larger than what our cars are to show how much space I would have in a worst case scenario......

I am going to leave my compressor where it is at in the corner.... It is a nice location for me. Easy to service with all the space around it. In the center of the garage is the red pole ---- the needed support for the parts of the house above. There is the cabinet in the back next to the work bench would would be built in and also sit above my tool box. On the wall behind the bench would be my peg board. I'm going to be adding my shop PC to that area as well......

Any suggestions aside from a stool to sit at? I made the bench for a bigger guy like me so do not dog it's 41" height. I love tall work benches, I hate having to bend over to work on **** and I usually am doing automotive electrical or small engine parts on my bench, so having them up higher and closer to me is just better for me.

Edit 1: The space between my compressor and cabinet would also be used for my larger garage items... IE: Bikes, shop vac, snow blower (or lawn mower, depending on season)...

Haven't been able too update much. With the wife getting sick and me taking care of her and spending time with her at the hospital for five days and the both of us missing some work the garage updates went on the back burner.

Got her back to feeling 100%. Got my bank account back in the right direction and am resuming my garage organization. I am in dire need of finishing up my shelving for the cabinet I bought so I can put everything away as well as getting a new pegboard for where my new bench is. Also need to figure out how I am going to do my air compressor lines....harbor freight special probably...

Ill try to upload pics this week with my day off for thanksgiving.

Have a good turkey day everyone!
