So after researching and finally deciding to buy one Saturday I must say that I'm very pleased with my latest purchase. So I figure I'd write a little review.

Topic: Napa 7 drawer tool cart by Homak
IMAG0449.jpg

First thoughts:
I'm more or less comparing the NAPA cart to the Cornwell since those were the 2 I was looking at and the closest carts to compare. From the research I did I expected it to be VERY comparable to the Cornwell (which I was strongly considering). The Cornwell is about $1000 bucks but is very nicely built and equipped. Compared to the Cornwell the NAPA is about 3" narrower, a bit shallower and about 2"-3" shorter overall. (I can get some more specific info here) Quality of this NAPA cart is very good overall from what I can tell. Decent metal although I'm not sure on the exact guage. At first after seeing it compared to my Matco I was disappointed by how much smaller interior it had in the till but after loading it up everything just seemed to fall right into place.

Pros:
*Extremely affordable @ $350 (my price on sale)
*Good looking
*Easy to move around
*Double ball bearing slides
*Built by Homak
*Screwdriver/prybar holders (very functional compared to the cheap HF, etc carts)
*Dimensions make it very efficient
*Nice detents on the drawers which make opening/closing a breeze
*No lock lever in the rear which means no boxed in area for the locking mechanism that kills space. (My Matco had this)
*Bumper guards to protect from scratching

Cons:
*Still not as big as the cornwell
*Annoying (SUPER ANNOYING) locking/safety to prevent more than one drawer to open at a time
*NAPA lettering is painted (may be a pro to you but I hate decals/stickers and I'm not able to remove it)
*4 swivel casters which make steering slightly more difficult in tight spots (although they surprisingly work pretty well)
*Casters are pretty firm which causes you to pick up alot of vibration rolling around and causes things to get dislodged/fall (cornwell has nicer casters and roll a bit smoother)
*The far rear prybar hole has some interference going down to the second hole from the upright on the back so you can't put a long pry bar in the back (at least not one with a wide tip). I may make a small modification to allow for this
*The bumpers/corner guards are thin looking/cheap looking
*The red is kind of a lighter/pale red

Overall:
I would DEFINITELY buy this cart again. Very nice alternative to $1000 cart and still well worth the money. I would recommend this to anybody.

To give you an idea of drawer space. I have a plier rack that has been cut down to about 20" and works great in this setup.

Next to a Cornwell.

This is what I replaced:

Nice review. I need to get some magnets and use that lid space like you.

The cornwell drawer is about 1.5" longer.

I kind of wondered about having the locking mechanism in the back.
I like being able to open the drawers with the top closed. The Napa doesn't allow that.

you wont appreciate not being able to open all the drawers until you've had your loaded cart/cabinet topple onto the floor.

Regardless its a nice looking cart [one which i'm still trying to hunt down] and for 1/3 the price of a truck brand cart i dont think you can go wrong.

That looks sweet, I like the Cornwell & S/O cart. I did like the Matco one till I saw it compared to the CW & S/O version.

For $350 I'd say you did damn good.

Did you purchase this on-line or locally? The NAPAs in this area (Northern NJ) and not nearly as stocked (or friendly) to the weekend wrencher.

Very nice review. Thanks for posting!

Thanks
Jim

Nice purchase!

After you widen the holes for Pry bars and ratchet handles, you need to slap a magnetic glove holder on one side and attach a side shelf to the other side.
MTS magnetic wrench holders or Vim magrails can expand your storage capacity by using the underside of the lid.
I saw a few different Homak carts at Sema last year with deeper tills but, I can't find anyone selling them. Still a great cart for the money.

The info/pictures you posted in another thread was actually the reason for me buying one. Thanks ;-)

I totally forgot about gettin more pics today. Got some more tools ordered so I'll be able to add a bit this week. I'll try to get some dimensions tomorrow however there is a thread on here with dimensions if you search napa tool cart.

Edit: here ya go http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=89015&highlight=napa+tool+cart

I've got a bunch more goods coming either Friday or Saturday. Wrenches, the mts wrench holders, etc. I had already ordered that stuff before you mentioned it;-)

I think the blue cart is the best looking but I already have a red so box and I opted for red so that everything would be the same color.

Weird I didn't know the Cornwell 7 drawer is taller than the Cornwell 4 drawer. My 4 drawer is the same height as the Napa.

i own two matco service carts as MSC4 and MSC12.. MSC12 are best cart i has use and still use at work. it will hold a lot and lot of tools and no problems to push around... but i am looking for more storage space like add drawers under msc12 OR just get other cart with all drawers all way... i am not sure..

my matco msc4 i had used it a lot at old job, it served me good but i had worn out ball bearing slides even bent... but right it is my harley specialist tools storage cart...

I really like the Cornwell with the drawers all the way to the bottom. But there is no such thing as Cornwell in Norcal.

were did you get the the tool holder in lid of your box?

I bought it from the Matco guy. I actually just bought a red one to replace it and have no use really for the green one. If you'd like it maybe we could work somethin out.

Does anyone know if the casters on the napa cart can be removed and put some pnuematic tires like these?

Your link didn't work but I wouldn't see why not. Just have to measure and compare the bolt pattern.

No where
Link works for me, they are 6 inch pnuematic casters. My driveway is exposed aggregate so rubber tires should help and being 6 inches wil make the cart a little taller.

Wow! I gotta try that with mine. It would solve some problems. Did you upgrade the struts?

What is the part number on this cart? I have looked all over the NAPA site for it, but can't find it.
Same! Theres a cornwell in my area for 400, but I haven't got the cash for it yet...so this will suffice when I have cash and the cornwell dissapears

i like that where did you get teh holders ????
bought mine from Tooltopia. Cheapest place I could find.

They are Mechanics Timesavers brand.

I guess you never close your lid, eh?

Nope, no need to.

With the lid fully up there isn't that much stress put on the shocks. It'd be different if they were actually having to LIFT the weight. I will probably buy some threaded rod to replace them just to preserve the new shocks in case I ever decide I wanna open/close the lid.

What is the part number on this cart? I have looked all over the NAPA site for it, but can't find it.

I couldn't find it either. I just called our sales rep and he did all the footwork for me and shipped it 30 miles from another store and had it waiting for me. Now THAT'S service.

I would buy it in a heartbeat if it's a 7 drawer. Wish there was one around KC. Where is your area?

got nothing from napa online

I'll look on the owner's manual and receipt for a p/n.

There was another post on this cart. I was trying to get it a month ago but Napa doesn't stock them or have any orders out for them anymore. I had to confirm this with balkamp. The only way you can get this cart is if a local Napa has it in stock somewhere.
