Gold Country Garage

Its been a slow build. I started it August of '05. I keep waiting for it to be tidier and more organized until I shared with the board, but I've realized it will be a while,so I might as well share what I've got. Please excuse the mess.

attachment.php

The main goal was to have dual purpose garage / automotive workshop with room for household storage. The basic specs are 35' wide by 40' deep, with 12' walls. It may seem like a bit of an odd size, but I was limited to 1400 square feet due to zoning restrictions on our 1.25 acre lot. I wanted it detached from the house so noise wouldn't be an issue. At the time we were also designing a larger 2nd house to be built on our property. We decided on a Mediterranean style for the house and wanted the garage to match.

Im not sure if you can see in the pics, but along the right side of the foundation (left in the pic), the stem wall isn't there. This will allow me to put in a second door in the side at some later date without having to do any concrete demo.

That looks like a lovely piece of property you have there. Auburn is a nice area.

Great work on the garage, maybe some interior pics at some point?...

The walls are 12''-6". I wanted room for a lift someday, and most seem to be 12'. The extra 6 inches of breathing room was provided by the foundation stem walls. the trusses are 40' with a 4 and 12 pitch. We wanted a tile roof so went with 2x6 top cords for a little added strength.

The windows along the back have a 6' sill height that will allow for a workbench etc under them, provide plenty of light (southern exposure), and to keep nosy neighbors from peeking in.

I designed in an office and a bathroom. The office is 10x10 and the bathroom is 4x10. This area has regular 8' ceilings. That allows a 140 sq ft storage area up top for household storage (christmas decorations, camping gear etc).

attachment.php

The main door is 10x16. That is to accomodate lifted 4wds, pickups with racks, and should allow a travel trailer to go in without a problem as well.

Looks like a great space . I need more inside shots as this is the exact size I am considering doing ( without the office and bathroom ) so I would like to see what you can fit in there :D.

We splurged a bit on the main door. The garage faces our house and since we have to stare at it, I wanted it to look nice. Its an overhead door done in a carriage style.
The stucco is a 2 coat technique over closed cell foam. The foam doubles as insulation and stucco backing. In this first pic you can see that the doorway was originally lathed square. While it looks OK, I redid it to match the arch on top of the door. I think it adds quite a bit to the overall look of the garage.

The windows we chose were Milgard 'ultra' which are a fiberglass window. We did this so that we could paint them a custom color rather than the standard offering.

Here are the last couple exterior shots.

It is a 2 coat stucco with an acrylic finish. We chose a pale yellow base. From there it has 2 different stain colors (a dark green and a dark brown) applied to give it an aged look. The advantage is I will never have to paint it. The we wanted a blue for the windows. Originally it was a lighter blue, but after a test window (far left on the back) we realized that a darker color was needed. We ended up with a dark navy.

Rick

I can fit 7 cars in there, but I have stockpiles of stuff being stored in there for the house we are building, so I only have 6 in there currently.

That is a very very nice garage/workshop/office/junk store. Some of the others on here may be bigger but this is definitely my favourite.

That's a great looking building, I really like the mediteranian look. I hope you send us an updated pic with the new house, (in the background of course).... after all this is a garage forum.

BTW Auburn is a nice area, I spent some years growing up in Auburn and Cool. Miss living there, it's a nice place.

Ill have to get a couple pics of the house, but its still under construction. With both the shop and house we are on a cash financing plan, so its taking us quite a bit longer than a traditionally financed project.

Auburn is a great place. Its absolutely beautiful. Ive lived here 9 yrs and am still in awe of the natural beauty. For those that dont know about Auburn, its right on I-80 in between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe, in the foothills of the Sierra mountains. Its about 20 miles from Coloma, which is where Sutters mill was located and where gold was discovered in California.

Well, its been 8 months and no progress on the shop. But the good news is that the house has been progressing. Within this next month (I hope) I'll be able to move ALL of the remaining construction materials (doors, tile, plumbing & electrical fixtures) out of the shop. The will give me a chance to reorganize everything out there and finally get permanent power out there. I guess I should throw up some pics of the house since that is where all of the progress has been made.

The exterior is about 90% done, but at the time we had the stucco done, we didn't have our doors yet. Those walls still need to be stuccoed, then stained. That is also the reason that the downstairs windows haven't been painted yet.

This pic shows the lower wall with the base coat and no stain. You can see how the stain adds a richness and changes the look quite a bit.

The little door is the 'room' for the dog. A pic of him is here in the garage dog thread.

The upstairs hall. Those 4 windows are the ones above the front door and look out above the shop.

The master br with some coving on the ceiling. All of the coving on he ceilings in the living room, downstairs hall and master br, I did myself as well. I might have some progress pics of that on the hard drive somewhere.

Nice garage and house. I've been working on my garage redo to fix it up for my lack of organization. I'll be housing 3 Rovers and a Mini. You have great taste in vehicles!

Beautiful! It reminds me of northern Italy or Swiss Ticino. Love the drive through portico.

The pics can be deceiving: it looks huge or just right depending on the view in your pics. How many square feet will the finished house be? What will you use for HVAC?

Thanks guys for all the compliments.

Zoning in my area has a limit of out buildings at 2400 spq ft. The little grey house that we are currently in is 1000sq ft. and that left 1400sq ft. for the shop. The house 4100 sq ft. It is bigger than we had origionaly set out to build. We have 4 children, and we wanted then to have their own rooms, so that made it a 5 bedroom house. The size is actually on of the reasons for the portico. If that were an attached garage I think it would make the house look even bigger, and as it was we didnt want it to seem huge. I also didnt want it to be a place that stored alot of ****. It being open helps to keep it simple. It is enough that in keeps the sun off the car in the summer so it isn't an oven, and it keeps the frost off in the winter so i don't have to scrape the windshield.

HVAC: we have 2 AC units and 2 propane furnaces. Its been so long I forget the tonnage on them. Where we live it gets hot durring the day, but cools off nicely at night, and so in the summer we open our windows at night. We also have a whole house fan that will help draw in the cool evening air. As it is now, in our little house, we only run the AC for an hour or two per day, usually between 5 and 7 pm. In the winter to does get cold and gets below freezing most nights. I have hopes that we wont need to run the heat very much. As I've worked in the house the past few winters, it seems fairly well insulated even in its unheated state. The fireplace (while the face isnt finished) is fully functional, and has been enough to keep things above 50. We will also have a wood stove (vermont castings) in the family room with a temp sensor to turn the HVAC fan on to help circulate the wood heat.

Beautiful house and garage! The stain on the stucco makes it look like it's been there for a hundred years, and the style suits the surroundings perfectly. Do you have any landscaping plans for between the house and the shop?

Got to love a BMW touring. 540?

I'm still researching what I want the driveway material to be. It's a decent sized area, so concrete will be fairly expensive and bare asphalt will be very hot. I've been leaning towards to decomposed granite. That is for the are that is currently crushed rock. The area that is currently dirt/weeds will be some sort of a flower garden with hedges and a trellis etc. I've also got a couple of pink flamingos that I'd like to put out, but when ever I bring it up, my wife gives me "the look"

Not its a 528. Im more of an I6 fan when it comes to BMW's. Besides it's plenty quick for getting groceries or picking up kids from soccer. :D Here is a pic from the station wagon thread.

Beautiful house and garage. Having grown up in Tucson, and then lived in Vegas for 11 years, I got fairly sick of the stucco look with the tile roofs. Your house is most definitely the exception. Very well done, and quite tasteful!

Ill have to see about getting some pics and doing a bit of an update this weekend.

No we haven't moved in yet. Doing the work myself and with a cash budget, draws the time horizon out longer than most. We are probably still 1yr+ away. I'm now looking into cabinets and associated costs, and am contemplating making them myself. We'll see.

Great build. I love the look of the arched garage door. The whole project really fits well with the home.
