MAC breaker bar warranty Question

A friend of mine has a 1/2" drive MAC breaker bar that I snapped the square drive part off of trying to remove a lugnut that the tire shop cross threaded with their impact gun. It appears to be VERY old, he does not remember when he bought it.

I bought him a new one but the old one seems fixable. The handle is fine its just the swiveling head that needs replacing. I would rather see this tool fixed than end up in the scrap pile. Would MAC warranty this? If they wont could I even buy a new head for it? the part number is worn away all I can see is the MAC stamping on the base of the handle. It is about 24"long with a knurled handle.

I have searched but have come up blank, I bow to your knowledge! :bowdown:

Send it in to Mac Tools or give them a call; warranty shouldn't be a problem.

Of course
It's a Mac, they have a life-time warranty, why wouldn't they replace it?

I just was not sure due to its probable extreme age. I cannot find anything like it at all on their web site.

Also I don't have the little square piece that went into the socket. The detent ball had long ago failed so when it snapped me and the bar went flying into the floor and the socket and square drive piece went flying. I found the socket 2 days later but that little square piece probably got swept up and is long gone. :lol:

Shouldn't be a problem with how old it is.

Just send it in like billymade said and you should have a new one in about three weeks.

Thats how long it took them to replace my ratchet a while ago.

Thanks for the quick responses guys! Looks like its time to mail it in and hope for the best!

EDIT: Think Craftsman will do the same? I found an old 11/16 socket from the 40's or so in a box of tools from a yard sale that has a huge crack down one side. Wonder if the store clerk would even recognize it. It has no chrome left at all if it was even chromed when new!

Absolutely
Just hand it to the clerk and ask for a new one.
As long as it says Craftsman on it, it's warrantied forever.

Every now and then, you will run into a wise-*** behind the counter who won't wan't to replace it because "it's too old", or any one of their other half assed excuses.
But according to the Craftsman warranty, they have to replace it.

I had one with the end broken. I caught up with a MAC dealer and he handed me a new piece. Didn't even have to show him the broken one. Mine had a hex head screw that held it in there. That dealer had a drawer full replacement parts for breaker bars.

Kirbot that's what I figured. I already have a newer socket of the same size and like keeping the old broken one around as a show piece of the old style tools. Maybe one day I will bring it to sears and see what they say!

Mine is the same way. Hex head screw holding it together. I tried to remove it but years of use has peened over the screw and the head of the screw twists but will probably break off if i really torque it. I could grind off the other end to smooth it out but dont want to wreck it warranty wise. I would be happy with just a new head. The handle has many battle scars that add character that I would be happy to keep around.

Yes, Craftsman will for sure. I've ran into wise asses as well, and you just need to tell them to read their damn warranty or you'll get the manager. Then again, I know a manager at the Sears I go to, I don't have much trouble.

I have a friend whose father is in his 90's and his Sears Best toilet seat that he has had since the 40's broke, he took it in and they gave him a new one! His father still had the receipt and the packaging! The clerk called the manager and the manager said that if it wasn't a toilet seat he would put out for display

I have never figured out why people (Pros and DIYer alike) don't start threading those lug nuts by hand first. First of all I would have taken that vehicle back to the tire shop and had them remove and repair the damage to the stud and lugnut. They should, they caused it.

Seems to be common these days, especially with so-called professionals. There's always time to re-do mistakes or fix messes, but never seems to be enought time to do the job right the first time :headscrat

If you send the breaker bar in, my guess is Mac will send a new one. Mac redesigned their breaker bars a few years ago. A mac dealer who has been around for a while may have a repair head for that model, but I think that is wishful thinking.
