1-0 AWG Question

New to wiring and have a question about 1-0 AWG wire. Do they make 1-0 AWG that can be installed in a wall without being in conduit? Is so what do I need to ask for?

any thing that is not a manufactured cable like romex,wether single or several conductors have to be in conduit.you can get multi-conductor cable in 1 0.

Short version of a long story:

We're upgrading the wiring in our barn and upgrading the service from 20 amps to 100. For whatever reason I had it my head that I could run our 1/0 out of the conduit from the barn to our service at the house, through the walls and right to the box, not understanding this was not really a good idea code wise (made sense to me as it was going to be an electrical chase and covered). An electrical contractor buddy was looking at it for me and advised I needed to have it in conduit from box to box.

Running conduit in the house side of the project wasn't really a good option for us for many reasons, the least of which it would have had to been installed outside the walls and ceiling of our basement, which is semi-finished at this point.

Soooooooo, I was looking for an option that would allow me to install 1/0 in the electrical chase and floor joists, up to the 200 amp panel, without being in conduit.

At this point I think I will install an outdoor rated junction box outside the house where I will terminate the conduit and then bring the 1/0 SER 4-Wire from the house panel to the junction box.

This should be a lot easier then running conduit from box to box and make our local electrical inspector happy at the same time. (win/win? or something like that ).

Separate service is not an option for us at this point. Maybe in hind sight we should have planned for that but we really didn't want to deal with the power company and the local authorities with regards to utility trenching and separate metering at this time.

The barn remodel is adding a kitchen and bathroom to the barn in addition to remodeling the shop and equipment shed. Once this project is paid off (3-5 years) we will remodel the house and live in the barn during the house remodel. It is at that point we upgrade the all the elctrical to the property with underground service from the road to all our buildings. This way we will only be digging and moving primary service once. Or at least that's the idea.

We use ACWU cable up here,it is similiar to Teck cable(Aluminum armour with a black plastic jacket)and aluminum conductors.It's pretty versatile and can be run just about anywhere(inside,outside,underground even),the big advantage of that is not having to make transitions from one wire/cable/conduit system to another as the location varies.
