12v wiring in conduit?

This summer I'll be installing the four solar panels, combiner box and charge controller in my shop garage. The four panels will be wired with MC4 cables to the combiner box (which is like a DC breaker panel), and then from the combiner box to the charge controller.

Being a 12V system, I am curious if I need to route the MC4 cables in any sort of conduit, NEC wise.

Wow, great description written in a way to easily understand. Pretty much what I planned, in essence to treat the wiring below the roof from the solar array to the combiner and charge controller like standard 110 wiring.

My system is simple four panel stand alone 880 watt, each panel is rated 220 watts, max output of 35 volt DC. This is my first attempt at anything solar, so I am learning. I plan to run a 12v system for LED shop lights and outlets to charge my herd of motorcycles. I'll use at least two deep cycle batteries as the back up. The combiner box has four input pairs of +and -, and the MPPT charge controller is rated at 60 amps (Outback power brand). I've wired all the outlet boxes with 14-2 w/GND wiring just in case a future change to 110 volt is desired, including wiring to the main breaker panel which will be in the wall, just not connected.
