2-7/8 vs. 3 inch cut off wheels

I received an Ingersoll Rand cutoff tool for Christmas and while checking it out, I need to use 2-7/8" wheels for it. I haven't heard of those until now. I'm hoping I can use 3" wheels instead with no issues, mainly because they are easier to find. Any one here use 3" cutoff wheels where 2-7/8" are called for? I don't see where the extra 1/8" would make a difference as long as they clear the guard off the tool.
